Miesiąc temu, niedługo po moim powrocie z Austin, zostałam zaproszona na baby shower wyprawiany dla mojej znajomej. Nie znam nikogo, kto w Polsce organizowałby baby shower, też ten był pierwszym, na jakim byłam. Mogłam wybrać prezent sama lub użyć listy sporządzonej przez przyszłą mamę. Zadecydowałam więc zrobić coś własnoręcznie, w końcu każde dziecko zasługuje na quilt. Miałam pięć dni na szycie i oto co powstało. Zużyłam mój zapas skrawków, a wciąż zostało mi resztek na pewnie dziesięć podobnych quiltów (każdy uzależniony od kupowania tkanin może sobie wyobrazić moją szafę, prawda?). Wykrój „Circles, Circles” autorstwa Karen Weber pochodzi z książki „Batik Quilts”. Przy szyciu wykorzystałam też rady Susann K. Cleveland z książki „Impeccable Piecing”, dzięki czemu szycie poszło mi wyjątkowo gładko i bez większych stresów.

About a month ago, not long after my visit to Texas, one of my friends had her baby shower organized. Baby showers are not really a tradition in Poland so I’ve never been to one before. I was told that I could bring any gift or just use a registry she made. Obviously, I decided to make something for her baby myself. Every baby deserves a quilt. I didn’t have much time, only five days, and this is what came up. I used my stash and still have enough scraps to make probably ten more quilts like this (everyone addicted to fabric shopping can picture my closet, right?). The pattern was designed by Karen Weber; it’s called „Circles, Circles” and you can find it in the book „Batik Quilts”. I also used tips and tricks from Susann K. Cleveland’s book (more about it here) and it all worked great. Piecing was never so unstressful.

Rectangles

Zestaw tkanin, który wykorzystałam w tym quilcie, kupiłam na ostatnim spotkaniu Vancouver Modern Quilt Guild. Carola Russell opowiedziała nam o niciach i igłach. Niesamowite, jak wiele od nich zależy! Dla przykładu, jeżeli zależy wam na idealnie wyglądającym szwie, powinniście użyć bardzo ostrej igły. W przeciwnym wypadku tępa igła będzie przechodzić przez tkaninę w miejscu, które stawia najmniejszy opór, a szew będzie koślawy. To był naprawdę szybki projekt. Cóż poradzić, lubię prostotę. Jestem z niego zadowolona, chociaż zrobiłam jeden błąd. Nie zauważyłam, że szyję dwa środkowe paski z odrobinę bielszej tkaniny. Widać różnicę przy jasnym świetle. Wszystkie warstwy to 100% bawełna; rozmiar 91 cm x 100 cm.

I bought the bundle of fabric used in this quilt on the last Vancouver Modern Quilt Guild meeting. Carola Russell told us about threads and needles. It’s incredible how much depends on them. For example, if you really want your seem to look perfect you should use a very sharp needle. Otherwise the blunt needle will sew wonky stitches looking for the easiest way to go through fabric. This is a really quick project. I like simplicity. I’m satisfied with the result, although I made one mistake. I didn’t notice that I take different shades of white fabric for two stripes in the middle. So they are slightly whiter. All layers are sewn with 100% cotton; size 91 cm x 100 cm.

Houses

Odkąd uszyłam kocyk dla Jasia, Stachu także chciał mieć swój własny. Jak mogłabym mu odmówić? Sam wybrał wzór z „The Quilting Bible” i powiedział jakie chce kolory. Najtrudniejszym etapem nie było szycie, ale wycinanie równych części. Naprawdę nie myślałam wcześniej, że to może być aż takie trudne. Każde nawet jednomilimetrowe przesunięcie jest łatwo zauważalne.
W każdym razie jestem zadowolona z końcowego efektu. Stachowi też się podoba. Całość uszyta jest ze 100% bawełny. Dolna warstwa to ciepła flanela. Kocyk mierzy 94 cm x 144 cm.

Ever since I made the blanket for Jasiu, Stanley wanted to have his own as well. How could I say no? He chose a pattern from “The Quilting Bible” and told me which colors he wants to have on it. The hardest part of making it wasn’t the sewing but cutting even pieces. I didn’t realize how hard it is. Each displacement of just a single millimeter can be easily seen.
Anyway, I’m satisfied with the result and Stanley likes it, too. The whole blanket is made with 100% cotton fabric. I used warm flannel as the back layer. The measures are 94 cm x 144 cm.

Old-fashioned socks

Zima w końcu zawitała do Vancouver. Wciąż nie jest tak zimno jak podczas zimy w Polsce. Cały czas noszę moją pelerynę i nie czuję potrzeby zmiany na coś cieplejszego. Wieczorami jednak robi się dość chłodno i to jest czas na moje super grube skarpety :) Właśnie nauczyłam się jak je zrobić na szydełku, na zdjęciach widzicie pierwsze powstałe pary. Zrobiłam też jedną parę dla Stacha i od tamtej pory nosi je codziennie :)

Winter finally came to Vancouver. Still, it’s not as bad as it is during winter in Poland. I wear my cape coat and don’t feel like I need something warmer. However during the night it’s getting quite cold, so this is the time when my extra-thick socks come in :) I just taught myself how to crochet them, so this is my first batch ever. I made a pair for Stanley too. Since then he wears it everyday :)

Jasiu's blanket

Jasiu jest moim siostrzeńcem i chrześniakiem. Mimo, że jesteśmy teraz 8000 km od niego, chciałam dać mu coś na Święta. Polowanie na prezent rozpoczęło się i szybko skończyło bez pomysłu co właściwie mu dać. Kiedy ja byłam dzieckiem, każdy, kto miał rodzinę w Ameryce, dostawał najlepsze prezenty pod Słońcem. To było wiele lat temu, w ciężkich dla Polski czasach. Teraz wszystko się zmieniło i trudno jest znaleźć tutaj coś, czego nie można by kupić w Polsce. Zadecydowałam, że zrobię coś dla niego własnoręcznie. I oto jest! Kocyk z jego imieniem i mój pierwszy pełnowymiarowy quilt. Powinniście widzieć mnie narzekającą na to, jak krzywo wychodzi mi szycie. Okazało się, że to wcale nie takie łatwe jak myślałam. Mimo to podoba mi się finalny efekt (jednak następny musi być lepszy ;) ).

Jasiu is my nephew and a godson as well. Even though I’m so far away right now, I wanted to give him something for Christmas. I started gift hunting but ended up with no clue what to give him. When I was a kid, everybody who had family in America got the best presents ever. Those times in Poland where tough, the store shelves were empty. But it changed completely many years ago and now it’s hard to find anything here that you couldn’t buy in Poland. So I decided to make the gift for him myself. And this is it! A blanket with his name. It’s the first full size quilt I’ve ever made. You should see me grumble about crooked stitches. It turned out not to be as easy as I thought. Still I’m happy with the final result (but next one has to be better ;) ).

Fabrics in Vancouver

Jak wspomniałam we wcześniejszym poście, w Vancouver jest ogromny wybór tkanin. Fotograficzny dowód w dalszej części. Odwiedziłam tylko kilka sklepów w okolicy. W Polsce brakowało mi najbardziej drukowanych, w 100% bawełnianych tkanin, przeznaczonych dla dzieci i szycia quiltów. Na szczęście mają ich tutaj pod dostatkiem.

As I mentioned in the previous post, in Canada I found the greatest selection of fabrics you could ever dream of. A proof. I visited only a few shops in the area. What I needed the most and missed in Poland were printed 100% cottons dedicated for kids and quilt making. Fortunately here it’s abundant.

Pierwszy przystanek zrobiłam w Spool of Thread. Sprzedają tam tkaniny moich ulubionych firm i projektantów, wszystkie w tym jednym miejscu! Zrobiłam tylko kilka zdjęć, ale jeżeli chcecie więcej wystarczy spojrzeć na tkaniny Birch, cloud9 lub Roberta Kaufmana, a najprawdopodobniej mają je w tym sklepie.

My first stop was Spool of Thread. The shop sells fabrics from my favourite companies and designers, all in one place! I took just a few pictures of the store but if you want more just look at the fabrics from Birch, cloud9 or Robert Kaufman. You can probably find them there.

Fabricland to dużo większy sklep, niestety daleko od centrum miasta. Jednak wciąż wart odwiedzenia. Ceny są odrobinę niższe. oprócz tkanin mają bawełniane i poliestrowe ociepliny w ogromnych rolkach. Można kupić tak duży kawałek jaki się tylko potrzebuje.

Fabricland is a bigger store, unfortunately quite far from Downtown, but still worth visiting. The prices are a bit lower. Besides fabrics they also have cotton and polyester battings in huge rolls. Should you need it, you can buy a piece no matter how big.

Tak samo jak w poprzednim sklepie dostępne są 100% bawełny w wielu kolorach i wzorach.

Dressew w centrum miasta, jest największym sklepem spośród tutaj wymienionych. Jedno piętro na tkaniny, drugie na dodatki krawieckie. Po prostu spójrzcie na zdjęcia :)

Dressew located in Downtown is the biggest of all stores I want to mention this time. One floor for fabrics and another for sewing notions. Just look at the pictures.

Ostatnie miejsce, które odwiedziłam to The Cloth Shop na Granville Island (nie wiem skąd ta nazwa, bo to wcale nie jest wyspa :P). Najbardziej urokliwy sklep w okolicy. Tkaniny są bardzo ładnie wyeksponowane, mogłabym kupić wszystkie na raz. Podoba mi się duża kolekcja tłustych ćwiartek. Czego nie mogłam znaleźć w innych miejscach, a jest dostępne właśnie tam, to wełniana ocieplina do quiltów. Niestety dosyć droga.

The last one I visited was The Cloth Shop located on Granville Island. It was the cutest shop I found in the area. Beautiful fabrics displayed in a way that you want to buy them all at once. I like that they have a big FQ collection. What I couldn’t find in other stores is wool batting, which they have. It’s quite expensive though.

I read reviews and feedback about some of those shops and the comments say that the customer service is not the best (no names). I don’t know if it’s true, I didn’t experience unkind behaviour myself. Maybe it’s just because you don’t get intense customer service where I come from, I also don’t expect it here. It’s definitely not a thing which could stop me from buying there.
