happy new year!!

These tips for a New Year's Eve toast were in my morning newspaper.  I thought I would share them with you if you are like I am sometimes - at a loss for words:

1.  "As we start the New Year let's get down on our knees to thank God we're on our feet." (Irish saying.)

2.  "Be at war with your vices, at peace with your neighbors, and let every new year find you a better man." (Benjamin Franklin)

3.  "Here's champagne to our real friends, and real pain to our sham friends." (Attributed to Francis Bacon, among others.)

4.  "May all your troubles during the coming year be a short-lived as your New Year's resolutions."

5.  "Here's health to those I love and wealth to those who love me."

I especially like that last one.

Happy New Year everyone.  I wish you peace, happiness and quiet times in the new year!

scenes from lake placid

Every year we make the trek to Lake Placid, New York.  The town of Lake Placid actually runs along Mirror Lake.  The Lake Placid body of water is a short way across from Mirror Lake.  It is a wonderful place to visit.  If you are into winter sports this is the place to come to.  They have hockey, ice skating, downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, etc., etc.  If you just like to hang out, watch it snow, eat good food, do a little Christmas shopping you can do all of that and more.

Mirror Lake Inn

View from our room.

Inside of Mirror Lake Inn

The Cottage Restaurant across the street
 from the Mirror Lake Inn.
Good food, good atmosphere, very cozy, right on the lake.

View on walk around Mirror Lake.
In Lake Placid you have to do the ATL.
Around The Lake walk. The distance is a little over 3 miles.

Main road through Lake Placid.
It is filled with shops, restaurants, and hotels.

Seems like every town has a Palace Theatre.

Bluesberry Bakery.  Fine Baked Goods.

Brown Dog Cafe.

These two dogs have been guarding this cafe for a long time.
They never leave their posts. Good dogs.

Lake Placid Brewery.  Good place for microbrewed beer and a plate of supreme nachos.

Great Adirondack Steak and Seafood Restaurant.
Good food, microbrewery and atmosphere.
This place is filled with antiques.

Olympic Center.
This is where the USA Hockey team beat the Russians
and then Finland to win the Gold Medal at the 1980 Winter Olympics.

I could not resist this Sock Monkey Hat.  I needed it. It was
very cold and windy.  It kept my head and my ears warm.

One last look at Mirror Lake.

head start on the holidays

I spent the day working on getting my house in order for the Holidays.  First thing was to vacumn and dust.  This is not my favorite thing to do.  Think about how you spend a good part of your time moving dirt around.  You bring it in, you clean it up, take it outside and then bring it in again.  It's a never ending cycle.  Whew!  It wears you out.  Unless you enjoy house cleaning then this is all fun for you.  The fun part of this job was getting a head start on decorating one of the three trees that I put up for Christmas.  Up from the basement I brought one of my alpine trees.  I put on a CD of Johnny Mathis singing Christmas tunes to get me in the mood.
Before the decorations.

Ta da - my Snowman Tree.
Everyone together now say "Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow".

saturday morning muffins

Every Saturday morning I make muffins. Last Saturday I made these muffins that were so good I had to make them again today. After my morning walk these will taste so good with a cup of tea.

Fiber Rich Muffins
1 cup Hodgson Mill Multi Grain Hot Cereal
1 cup white flour, unbleached
1 Tbsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 cup sugar
1 cup carrots, shredded
1 cup apples, peeled and chopped
1/2 cup milk (can be skim)
2 eggs (or 4 egg whites)
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 cup pecans or walnuts, chopped
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Line 12 muffin cups with paper liners or grease muffin cups. Blend together dry ingredients. Add remaining ingredients and mix until blended. Batter will be thick; spoon into muffin cups. Bake 20-22 minutes or until golden brown.

in honor of the first snowfall

Great song from one of my favorite movies.

first snow

The first snow of the season has started in my neck of the woods. Time to grab the jammies, comfy socks, a hot cup of tea, and relax to the sounds of snow falling.

we did it

Congratulations to the New York Yankees for winning the World Series. Their challange was to win the game and mine was to stay awake to see it. They did and so did I. We both accomplished our goals. So tonight it will probably be lights out early to catch up on what I missed. Once again Congratulations to my favorite team.

How about those Yankees!!!

halloween hangover

I am suffering from a Halloween candy hangover. I was doing real good. I wasn't eating candy. I was trying to eat right. Then the boss' secretary started bringing in Halloween candy. It started slowly just one small fun size bag of peanut M&M's once a day. Then I bought candy to hand out to the trick or treaters. I ate a whole bag of Almond Joy fun size candies by myself. I didn't eat the whole bag in one day. I ate 2 or 3 a day for over a week or so. Yesterday we had about 20 trick or treaters. More than we had last year and most were teenagers. So, I had bought about 5 bags of candy because you never know how many will show at your doorstep. So yesterday I ate about 4 or 5 pieces, I lost count. Today I ate 4 more - hey they are fun-size and I like to have fun. Now I am feeling guilty, guilty, guilty. So to make myself feel better I just went for a walk to hopefully burn off some of the sugar I have ingested for the past month. I think it's going to take more than a few laps around the block to get rid of my sins.

excellent adventure october 1, 2009

If you live in upstate New York or northern Pennsylvannia you should take a day trip to the Corning Museum of Glass. There you will find some of the oldest known pieces of glass right up to the modern uses of glass today. You can learn all about glass, glass making and the history of glass making in Corning, New York. My friend Tami and I took the day off from work and made the drive.

The entrance to the Museum.

Some examples of old glass.

Beer glasses.

Oil lamps.

Glass lamps.

Glass table with bowl.

Soda bottles with painted labels.

Bulb tester.

Stained glass window.

Gift shop.

Steuben glass.

This piece of Steuben glass is $16,000.

Glass pumpkins for sale in gift shop.

Glass making demonstration.

After the museum we headed down to Market Street for a little antiquing. Market Street is lined with old renovated buildings filled with antique shops, restaurants, gift shops, bars and an old theatre.

We found an antique shop filled with a lot of treasures.

Kitchen things.

Kick knacks.

Grand Old Flag.
Teapots.

Old tools.

On the street we found this Pumpkin witch brewing up a tubful of Fall fun.

Silly me. Having fun on Market Street.

It was a excellent adventure.
