Benevento at The Mint

Jam fans and piano aficionados would be doing themselves a service by going to The Mint tonight.  Ivory and ebony virtuoso Marco Benevento takes to the stage at the Pico funk hub to lay down some thick jazz, granola tunes and the occasional party starter like "Limbs of a Pine."   You may remember Marco from the Benevento/Russo Duo - but tonight's outfit should be a bit more eclectic, plus he is joined by Mike Dillon of Garage A Trois, Polyphonic Spree, Les Claypool's Flying Frog Brigade and more.

Watch these holy fists of fury go to work on the bass strings all month long at The Mint when Erick "Jesus" Coomes, ED, The Holy Rager, Facemelter or insert your own nickname here, plays at the venue's increasingly popular funky residency.

The raging bassist of Lettuce is bringing his Big Lil Baby Jesus Peasant Party to the Pico venue and will be joined by Tyler Coomes (drums) and Adam Smirnoff (guitar) tonight (and possibly some other special guests).  Get your tickets here and use discount code SUPERGOOD for a month long party pass.

Bonnaroo 2012: D'Angelo's First American Performance in 12 Years

Just in case you hadn't heard - or haven't seen - D'Angelo joined ?uestlove & Friends at their Bonnaroo 2012 Superjam - and paraded through Jimi Hendrix and other classics.  Catch a few videos below and remind yourself why you shouldn't miss the chance to take a trip to Manchester, TN in June 2013.

Under the Radar, But Soooo Good - Eric McFadden

L.A. is not a town known that is necessarily known for its deep appreciation of jazz, funk, bluegrass, jam-rock music and all the eclectic blends in between.  That said - there are a few enclaves that do embrace those sounds and from time to time pull in some exceptional talents whose compositions span all of the above.  One of those venues, The Mint, recruited one of those artists, Eric McFadden, and an all-star support cast, including Wally Ingram and The Meters Leo Nocentelli, to melt some faces this Friday June 22, 2012.

You can get some free tickets to see the 6-string master by reaching out to contest@supergoodmusic.com or mentioning @supergoodmusic @mintLA and @EMACSF in a tweet.

Photos: Orgone at Bonnaroo

Home grown LA funk collective ORGONE crushed the stage at Bonnaroo two weeks ago (in a good way).  Raging rhythms hard for those that took two days of work - Orgone delivered their quintessential vibrant So-Cal flavored grooves with a lot of energy, some wailing vocals and top notch percussion from Stewart Killen.

It was the perfect set to kick off Bonnaroo....hope they bring them back in 2013!

Doo Wop Pop Rock - Electric Guest's "This Head I Hold"/MONDO Record

Electric Guest's debut record got the Danger Mouse treatment - and can't say that I'm disappointed about that.  Just about everything DM touches is dope - and Mondo and its lead single "This Head I Hold" are no exception to the rule.  With an album like this - they could be destined for greatness....

It's like Danger Mouse had a baby with Mark Ronson on the production end - because it sounds so freaking good.  From the catchy electro jams in "The Bait" to the funky grove of "Awake" to the nostalgic pop throwback sounds in "Waves" to the soft ballad feel of "Amber" - Electric Guest covers a lot of sonic territory and they do it really well.  They even manage to make synthesized syncopation sound indie cool in a cryptic way on "Holes."  At times it is hard to separate where the genius is coming in, because it's not all production.  I'm not calling the album a masterpiece (yet), but these guys deserve a thank you for delivering a solid product.

My sleeper track - "American Daydream."  It's beautiful.

"This Head I Hold" - the quasi doo-wop pop rock track is fun, nostalgic and simple.  The video isn't.  The video is actually a complex metaphor for the moral or ethical quandary a lot of artists find themselves in - take the life of a performer and its uncertainties and dark truths?  Or the path to something else?

Pinot - The New L.A. Jam Funk Band To Watch

SUPERGOODMUSIC got funked up on some Pinot at the Roxy on Saturday November 5th, and it proved a perfect reminder of what live music can do to an audience. Every person at The Roxy found their groove, and some found moves they had only seen on TV or in The Black Keys video for "Lonely Boy."

Pinot’s funky foundation peppered with everything from dance music to jazz created the perfect storm on the floor causing every waist to swivel, head to bob, and foot to tap. Delta Nove played a very solid set as usual, but the entire night had the aura of a “passing of the torch” as Pinot posted the set to remember. Pinot’s pocket was tighter, the arrangements more interesting, and the dynamic swells came at just the right moments kicking the party into a new gear every time. Its apparent that Pinot is taking the L.A. funky jam scene to the next level with the help of a remarkable vocalist in G. Curtis.

If you are a fan of Delta Nove and weren't at the show, you owe it to yourself to check out Pinot. The sheer tightness of the band alone created an instant respect for the players on stage, and once each member had their turn in the spotlight it was clear Pinot found something that works. If you have friends that think they can’t dance, take them to a Pinot show. If you haven’t already opened a new window to check out Pinot’s website you can do so here < http://www.pinotfunk.com/PINOT/PINOT.html>, and check in with SUPERGOODMUSIC for news on when you can get down with a funky glass of Pinot next.

2 Master Bands Perform Together: My Morning Jacket with Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings at Gibson Amphitheatre

One of the best live acts on the scene, My Morning Jacket plays the Universal Gibson Amphitheatre on December 1st with soul revivalists, Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings.

MMJ, led by vocalist/guitarist “YimYames”, does more than just blow you away with their larger than life performance - they test your, the audience’s, concert endurance. With a reputation of playing 2-4 hour-long sets that rumble venues from start to finish, you can expect a long night of high caliber guitar fueled music that won’t have any attendees sitting in their seats. Enjoy a recent performance from Later with Jools Holland.

But this is not a night to miss the opening act. Her royal highness of soul and funk, Sharon Jones will get you amped, sending effervescent vibes to your feet with the help of her illustrious band, The Dap Kings. Despite coming in a small package, this woman knows how to start a giant party. With more energy than those half her age, Sharon Jones cuts a major rug in 4-inch heals, putting many of her young followers to shame.

This night of powerhouse music will most definitely scale your personal concert anthology. It’s not everyday that groups such as My Morning Jacket and Sharon Jones &The Dap Kings play the same show. So, to add to your excitement, SUPERGOODMUSIC is playing Santa (yes, in November) and giving away tickets to a lucky few … e-mail contest@supergoodmusic.com to enter or tweet @supergoodmusic @livenationLA and also visit our facebook page, like it and make a comment about wanting some MMJ tickets. The more you participate, the more likely you are to win. We'll be giving away 3 pairs of tickets before December 1st - so keep checking in!

Wasn't Kidding About Weapons of Audio

Heard from some friends in NYC that the Weapons of Audio show was way way impressive. Their words exactly were "they should be playing arenas." That forced me to go dig around the 'net a little bit and I unearthed this video for "If You Want Me." Not only does the sing remind me a little bit of Prince, but apparently that female vocalist has been on The Voice.

Brothers Floyd and Jeremy Daniels clearly have the hotness. And here they're joined by Coco, Breezy and Angela Wolff. Peep it for yourself...
