Check Yo Ponytail Celebrates 2 Years Next Week

Close followers of the LA live music scene or frequent foot traffickers of Sunset in Silverlake and Echo Park may have noticed an absence of Check Yo Ponytail shows this week - but rest assured, Franki Chan, Danny Johnson and family are not asleep at the wheel.  They are steering their party to an epic two year celebration.

They've recruited the biggest party animal of them all - Andrew W.K. - to headline their (re)birthday party at The Echoplex that includes additional music from Icona Pop, Diamond Rings, Cherie Lily and Aleister X.  Its 18+ and advance tickets are only $10 - so there is no doubt this thing sells out.  Get your tickets - or try to win them via SUPERGOOD, but we've only got one pair to share so you might just want to buy....If you feel like testing your luck too - just tweet out @checkyoponytail @supergoodmusic @iheartcomix and @andrewWK to enter or email us at contest@supergoodmusic.com.

If you didn't think the epic birthday party was enough of a treat - Iheartcomix is also hosting Dark Dark Dark, Emily Wells and Miss M.E. at The Echoplex on the 5th and Mount Kimbie with Grenier and Groundislava on the 8th at Los Globos.  Look for giveaways to those shows in next week's Concert Blast.

Rage on.  Hard.  W.K.  Style.

K. Flay Gets Dirty in So Cal (and Bonnaroo)

Former Stanford student and tom-boy k.flay brings her dirty lyrics and sneakerhead steeze to the left coast next week before heading east for Bonnaroo and more.  To celebrate her trip South, which includes a stop at The Constellation Room in Santa Ana and The Central SAPC in Santa Monica, we're paying homage in a blog post (and dishing out some free tickets to The Central show....)

If you don't know much about Kristine Flaherty - she's originally from Illinois and got the rap bug after moving to C-A to attend Stanford.  She claims her latest offering, Eyes Shut, is a response to 20-something apathy and an introspective nature.  With a colorful experience (she's toured the country as a solo white female rapper, her father died at age 14, etc.) - there is probably a lot of truth in her lyrics too.   You can witness first hand for yourself in SoCal this coming week or at Bonnaroo, where she drops 3 performances including That Tent at 4:15 pm on Thursday, and then later that night at The Silent Disco and again on Friday at the Silent Disco around 4 pm.

Don't miss your chance to catch this little spark plug before she releases a full length and blows up!  If you want a chance at winning tickets - send us a picture of a dirty street name similar to this k.flay photo.  Submissions should be sent to contest@supergoodmusic.com.  Alternatively, you can tweet out @supergoodmusic @thecentralsapc and @kflay along with a hashtag of your most creative dirty word!

Download her mixtape - I Stopped Caring in '96 - here.

Pimps of Joytime Know How To Party...

Jambanders, funksters and Brooklyn nostalgics can all rejoice on Friday at The Mint when Pimps of Joytime take to the stage. Traveling to the cosmos with their musical concoctions - the party funk band is sure to take the crowd along with them on their journey.

If you've caught them - you don't need to be convinced why they are the act to see if you just want to get your groove on. If you haven't - their shows are non-stop waves of funk jams that keep you two stepping, drinking and merry for a good two hours plus. You'll be sweating it up next to a stranger not even thinking twice about it.

Whether that sounds like a blast to you or not - it would be probably at least sound better if it didn't cost you a penny to do it....and we can help in that department. We have a couple pairs of tickets to give away to someone lucky who emails us at contest@supergoodmusic.com or share this blog post on their facebook page. Whatever you do - just make sure that you keep that music playing!

Greg Gillis Gets Going Again - Girl Talk Returns to The Palladium

Monday night I had the pleasure of seeing Girl Talk at the Hollywood Palladium. Just in case any of the readers out there are anything like my sister, I’m not talking about the super awesome teenage girl game from the 90’s, though the Girl Talk I am writing about does bring back a different kind of nostalgia. Do you remember in high school when there was that amazing party thrown by one of your friends when their parents were out of town, your best friend was the DJ and it was one of the most epic nights of your teen life? I do, and Monday night Gregg Gillis took me right back to to that high school house party again.

With searing mash ups of the best and most classic songs, he can take you from Deep Purple to Biggie Smalls to Ke$ha to New Order in a span of two minutes. The entire crowd at The Palladium didn’t stop moving all night, sweat and smells be damned! It was as if all of the white people in the room had been practicing their whole lives to dance that night because truth is, they have. Last night was the night when every hipster, square, and business person put their inhibitions aside and showed the moves they had been practicing in their mirrors at home for years. (Don’t lie, I know I’m not the only one who does this.)

The bopping Gillis was flanked by two dozen happily dancing concert goers on stage. Dripping in sweat and shirtless he flowed on from “Every Day” to “On and On” and then to “Let it Out." As soon as John Lennon’s “Imagine” came in through the sound system the crowd went wild and every one sang in unison while multi-colored balloons fluttered down from the ceiling. Girl Talk is an experience, and though most excellent when jamming at home prepping for a night out, it’s on a whole other level when you’re surrounded by thousands of other bouncing bodies. You may have missed out on last nights show, but lucky for you Gillis will be making his rounds and find his way back to the Hollywood Palladium on the 26th. So don’t miss out, pay the $25 to take the time tunnel back to high school. It’s well worth it.

Tic Tic Boom EP Release Show for Reasons & Rhymes

Local indie synth band Tic Tic Boom! take to The Viper Room's stage to wow a Sunset Strip crowd with their newly discovered penchant for a more Passion Pit-esque feel. Leaving behind some of their former punk gusto and embracing a slower tempo that is more synthesizer friendly, Leilani Francisco and Mike DeLay are now making music that grabs the attention of not just L.A.'s Sunset Strip crowd, but also its eastside faction. With catchy, quirky hooks belted by Leilani and Mike's heavily layered production - Tic Tic Boom are hoping their DIY efforts turn some heads in 2011.

We are running a giveaway for tickets on our twitter and facebook pages - and you can also RSVP to the facebook event here - http://www.facebook.com/#!/event.php?eid=186469588045511 The door price is $5 and everyone who comes for Tic Tic Boom! will get a copy of the EP with their attendance. You can check out a sneak peak download of their track "Just Friends" which is on the EP.

With another local synth based group, Odd Modern, providing support - the night should be filled with indie hipsters indulging in some electrified sounds. Odd Modern gives away all of their music for free at www.oddmodern.com. Check out this Odd Modern video featuring Steve O below:

Coachella Countdown Starts Now...

If you checked out our blast, you'd know how excited we are for this year's Coachella. We gave you a handsome serving of our thoughts on some of the artists playing in this week's CONCERT BLAST, but we're feeding you even more here...

http://remix.vg/wp-content/uploads/4589/deadmau5.jpg

Deadmau5 is definitely one artist that we think you should check out on Friday. Not only do we love the dude's funky fresh Mickey Mouse-ish logo, but the guys beats are spectacular. His 2008 Coachella performance was off the chain and there is no reason to suspect that Joel Thomas Zimmerman (the man behind the Mouse mask) won't bring it again.

http://www.djvibe.com/content/wp-content/uploads/deadmau51.jpg

The recent winner of several International Dance Music Awards and resident of Toronto is known for his progressive electro house music, as well as work other artists in the scene such as Kaskade. If you have not seen him before, it is nothing but danceable fun...and what else are you looking for at Coachella?

From his original tracks like "All U Ever Want", "Strobe" and "Ghosts N Stuff" to mash-ups featuring his music like "Hi Fatmau5" to DJs just blending his stuff at the club - you've probably already heard and enjoyed Deadmau5 even if you didn't know it. If you're gonna be at Coachella - make the conscious decision to see him. I promise you won't regret it.
