2278. Štátne Kúpele Piešťany. Hotel Eden

Saludos,

Dear Dietrich,

The iconic "glass bridge" in Piešťany is a symbol of the
city and a jewel of Slovakian architectural functionalism.

Sincerely,

Dear Henrieta,

The industrial and housing garden city in Bat'ovany
was the last BATA company development built by
architect and urban designer Jirí Voženílek before
WWII. The center of the city is dominated by a
large catholic church that can be seen to the right
and was designed by another great architect:
Vladimír Karfík.

Respectfully,
R

Dear Janos,

Before becoming the chief designer architect of the Bata shoe company, architect Vladimir Karfík had worked in both Le Corbusier's atelier in Paris (1925-26) and Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin office (1929-1930) in the United States. Later in 1938 he built numerous buildings for Bata including the well-known 16-floor Bata's skyscraper or Building #21 in Zlín used as the headquarter of the company in this city.

Best regards,

Dear Josef

The Colonnade Bridge aka Glass Bridge is a functionalist
roofed bridge and an extraordinary architectural work. It
was built in 1932 to connect the town of Piestany and the
spa island and includes small shops located at both ends.
This unique roofed bridge has also glass-covered wall
protection against strong wind along one of its sides.

Best regards,
R

Dear Tom,

Czech functionalist architect Jaromír Krejcar designed
the Sanatorium Machnác. This building is one of the
most important works of functionalist architecture in
Slovakia. Just a few years later he also designed the
renowned Czech Pavilion at the Paris Exposition of
1937.

Dear Emil,

These swimming pool and spa buildings were designed
in such a way that their functionality efficiency and beauty
link the building complex organically to its natural
environment.

540. Bratislava. Avion

Dear Emil,

The housing block Avion is a very interesting case of a
multi-use dwelling and commercial building. The architect,
Josef Marek, skilfully combined a compact ground floor
for retail spaces with 6 dwelling blocks on the upper
floors.

Sincerely.
R
