Horse Racing News and Quote Of The Day
Asmussen and Dutrow have positive tests for illegal drugs. (ouch on Asmussen, no surprise on Dutrow)
Jeremy Rose, jockey of Afleet Alex, gets a six month suspension for horse abuse. (sorry, Jeremy... there is no way that you can "accidently" whip a filly in the face causing damage to her eye.)
and the quote of the day:
"You mean Richard Dutrow, the guy who got his ass handed to him and everyone was happy about it?"
My favorite veterinarian, Gene Hill, when asked about Dutrow.

War Pass Back To Work
War Pass, the likely champion two year-
old male, breezed three furlongs
at Palm Meadows Training Center on
Thursday morning in his first workout
since his victory in the Bessemer
Trust Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) for
owner Robert LaPenta.
The undefeated Cherokee Run colt
was clocked in :37, the fifth fastest time
of 14 moves at the distance.
“He worked real nice doing it,” trainer
Nick Zito said. “He was just in a gallop.”
Zito and LaPenta are plotting a schedule for War Pass to race
three times leading up to the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum!
Brands (G1). Zito has tentatively selected the Tampa Bay Derby
(G3) on March 15 and the Wood Memorial Stakes (G1) on April 8
as the final two preps. He will wait until War Pass gets farther along
in his training before he picks out the first.
“We’ll play it by ear for the first one,” Zito said. “[The Tampa Bay
Derby and Wood Memorial] make sense to me. We’ll see if we can
go the mile-and-a-quarter.”

Breeder's Cup Contest
This is the 24th Breeders' Cup World Championships, but it is the first time it will be held at Monmouth, and it will be expanding to 11 races over two days. Monmouth traditionally races in the summer, but will have racing on Wednesday and Thursday before the BC cards Friday and Saturday.
Friday will feature the three new Breeders' Cup races - the Filly and Mare Sprint, Dirt Mile, and Juvenile Turf. On Saturday, the Elite Eight will be run - the Juvenile Fillies, Juvenile, Filly and Mare Turf, Sprint, Mile, Distaff, Turf, and Classic.
Entries were to be taken and posts drawn on Tuesday for all 11 races. I will list the official entries whan they come out. From that list everyone will pick one horse per race, with points given out for win, place, and show. (five points for win, 3 points for second, 1 point for third) Sound good? or does anyone have a better plan?

The Jockey Club Gold Cup
Another thrilling race to be run this weekend will feature Lawyer Ron against Curlin in the Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont.
The Jockey Club Gold Cup is one of four stakes races at Belmont on Sunday that reward winners with starting spots in the Breeders’ Cup World Championships as part of the new “Win and You’re In” format.
The Jockey Club Gold Cup winner earns an automatic starting spot in the $5-million Breeders’ Cup Classic Powered by Dodge (G1) on October 27 at Monmouth Park. Sounds like another "must see" race!

Stakes (G1) winner Curlin (Smart Strike) breezed on Monday in
preparation for planned starts in the $750,000 Jockey Club Gold Cup
Stakes (G1) on Sunday.
Street Sense and Hard Spun are both confirmed to run in the Kentucky Cup. These are the last prep races leading up to the Breeder's Cup. Soon it will be time for a Breeder's Cup pool.

Today's Racing
Grasshopper makes his first start since finishing a game second to Street Sense in todays Super Derby at Louisianna Downs.
Any Given Saturday will run in the Brooklyn Handicap at Belmont Park.
Evening Attire, Brass Hat, and Fairbanks head up today's Mass Cap. It's a good day for live racing at Suffolk Downs, complimented with some great races being simulcasted. Get out there!

The Mass Cap is back!
The Mass Cap will be run for the first time in three years on Saturday. Headlining the field will be Brass Hat, Evening Attire and Fairbanks. Due to not running for two consecutive years, the Mass Cap has lost it's Graded status, but that doesn't seem to be stopping quality horses from showing up. Article below:

From Thoroughbred Times Today
Rags to Riches suffers fracture, sidelined until 2008
Belmont Stakes (G1) winner Rags to Riches
suffered a hairline fracture to her right front
pastern and will miss the remainder of the
2007 season, trainer Todd Pletcher said on
Sunday.
Pletcher said he believes the A.P. Indy filly,
who on June 9 became the first filly in 102
years to win the Belmont Stakes, was injured
in the stretch of a runner-up finish in the
Gazelle Stakes (G1) at Belmont Park on Saturday.
Rags to Riches will resume her racing
career in 2008.
“The injury is not career ending, and she is expected to make a
full recovery,” Pletcher said. “It appears as though she sustained
the injury during the stretch run. When she switched to the right
lead, she came off the bridle and lugged in a bit. Though she cooled
out fine following the race, she appeared to be slightly off this morning.
Subsequent X-rays discovered the hairline fracture.
“She is resting comfortably and will ship to Ashford Stud [Monday],
where she will receive six weeks of stall rest to give the fracture
time to heal,” Pletcher said. “At the conclusion of her
convalescence, she will be re-X-rayed to determine when she will
resume training. She will not race again until 2008.”—Mike Curry

Racing Recap
Well, both Rags To Riches and The Green Monkey got beat yesterday. Rags To Riches ran a very good second, getting beat 1/2 length by Lear's Princess. Trainer, Todd Pletcher said after the race, “I would never be discouraged with this filly,” “I still think she is the best three-year-old filly in the country. “I think she is one of the best we’ve seen in a long time. Sometimes, the best get beat.”
The Green Monkey didn't fare as well. He finished a flat third place after chasing a strong pace. He had a small rally in the stretch, basically right before he got his doors blown off.

The Green Monkey
A year and a half since becoming the most expensive horse ever purchased at public auction, The Green Monkey is set to make his career debut on Saturday at Belmont Park.
Jockey John Velazquez will ride The Green Monkey for trainer Todd Pletcher and owners Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith, and Susan Magnier, who bought the Florida-bred colt for $16-million from consignor Hartley/De Renzo Thoroughbreds in the 2006 Fasig-Tipton Calder selected sale of two-year-olds in training.
Due to the long time and many setbacks in getting this horse race ready, he has become a bit of a joke among the horse community. Many speculated that he would never start. It will be interesting to see how he does in his debut and what type of career he will have. Saturday, the questions will be answered.

Quote of the Day
“Street Sense was getting a little racy after
the Preakness. We backed off and set our
goals up here. Right now, there’s not any
wear and tear on him. He’s as good as he
can be. The trainer—he may have a little
wear and tear on him.”
Trainer Carl Nafzger after Street Sense
won the $1-million Travers Stakes (G1) by
a half-length on Saturday at Saratoga Race
Course.
