Lava Man



Multiple Grade 1 winner Lava Man will be pensioned at Old Friends, a Thoroughbred retirement facility in Georgetown, Kentucky. The seven-year-old Slew City Slew gelding, who was retired with front ankle problems shortly after finishing last of six in the Eddie Read Handicap (G1) on July 20 at Del Mar, is scheduled to arrive at the farm on September 16.

The Pacific Classic


Lava Man is headlining a field of 13 horses in his attempt to win his second straight Pacific Classic. He drew the rail in the post position draw that was made special by the attendance of his groom, Noe Garcia, who was severly injured when a drunk driver rearended him last month and severed his arm.


The race is scheduled to go off at 4:44 PDT Sunday and will be televised on ESPN2.

Horse Racing News of the Week


Rags To Riches, this year's Belmont winner has had a rough week. She was scratched from the Coaching Club due to spiking a fever, and was then pulled up in a workout on Saturday. She has been checked out by Dr. Steve Alldey and was given a clean bill of health but they are still shipping her to the clinic for a thorough checkup.



The longtime groom for Lava Man was seriously injured in a car accident and has lost his left arm.



Hallway, by Graeme Hall finished 2nd in the $100,000 Loisianna Breeders Derby going 1 1/8th on Saturday. Hallway is owned by Helligbrodt Racing and trained by Steve Asmussen

Lava Man has tied the record set by Native Diver by winning three consecutive Hollywood Gold Cup's. The six year old California bred gelding has earned over 5 million dollars to date.
