A triskelion of cats
Hello and welcome to The Compost Bin. I'm Compostwoman and I live with my family in rural Herefordshire. We have nearly four acres of garden and woodland, all managed organically and to Permaculture principles, which we share with Chickens, Cats and assorted wildlife. We also grow a lot of our own food, run courses in all sorts of things and make a lot of compost!
I am a Master Composter and have spent more than a decade as a volunteer Community Compost adviser with Garden Organic and my local Council.
I'm a self employed Environmental Educator so I run workshops and events where I talk about compost, veg growing, chicken keeping, cooking, preserving and sustainable living. I also run crafts workshops and Forest School/outdoor play sessions in our wood.
We try to live a more self sufficient lifestyle here, as best we can, while still having a comfortable life and lots of fun.

Happy 1st Jan 2015
Hello to all my lovely blog friends.
A quiet day here today, we watched the Queen concert and the fireworks last night and saw in the New Year so today we got up a bit later than usual. We did the various chores outside then I settled down to a lot of mending and ironing and sorting stuff out; Compostman did various setting up of our respective bows and Compostgirl spent the day doing stuff with her laptop and mp3 player in her room.
Later on in the evening we had a fun shoot at our archery club indoor venue in Hereford; we used dart board target faces rather than the usual FITA design and had games of "darts" firing arrows rather than darts. Much hilarity ensued and it was all good fun!
So that was the first day of 2015. A good day :)
Also, I have started back on The Harcombe Diet seriously after a couple of weeks being less rigorous in avoiding carbs. As you may know I have lost a lot of weight in the last 6 months following this way of eating :) I have actually been keeping a blog about my weight loss journey and The Harcombe Diet so, if you would like to follow this private blog please email me to be added to the list of people who can read it. I can be contacted at compostwoman@the-compostbin.com

Happy New Year.
I hope 2014 is better than 2013, which quite frankly was not great for us here at Compost Mansions. Although the weather was better for gardening in 2013, ill health made it harder for both of us to get the things we wanted to achieve, done.
This trend continued right up until the very end of 2013, as I injured my shoulder and neck muscles just after Christmas and am finding it hard to sit up straight, bend down or turn my head. This just added more misery to the post 'flu aches and pains I was already feeling. So yet again lots of outside jobs have had to be put on hold until I am well enough. Being ill before Christmas also knocked a hole in my work schedule
Despite this, life has to go on and the chickens need tending, regardless. I had to go outside today in the wind and the rain, to put down pallets in the hen runs, so the poor things had somewhere dry to stand. At 2 pm it was nearly dark! The hens are not impressed by this weather or by the dull days (and who can blame them?) and huddle together in the barn, moaning at me to " make it stop" whenever I go outside.
Blondin the nearly-a-Cockerel dances around them, nearly but not quite brave enough to try his luck with the Big Hens. His fellow hatchling Treacle (who was formerly called Creosote) is not quite yet mature enough to squat for him and she just runs away, so he is not happy at all.
He is a handsome fellow and has a very melodious crow, and is not (so far) at all aggressive.
While outside this afternoon tending to the hens I looked around through the grey veil of rain onto a totally sodden garden which looks a mess. The bindweed is taking over the veg plot to the point where I am seriously considering razing the existing beds back to grass and starting all over with new ones, elsewhere. The ground is awash and everwhere I walk I leave foot shaped mini ponds behind.
Gloomy weather makes for gloomy thoughts in my head, which only longer days, outside work (with less rain!) will put right.
So, having written this post and having had a good look around Blogland, I am off to watch the first episode of the new series of Sherlock - can't wait to settle down in front of the fire and enjoy it :)
And it is STILL raining outside - and now the wind is rising and wuthering around the house. My thoughts are with all of you and hope you are safe, wherever you are.

New Year - hopefully a lot better?
I am sitting here at the desktop computer, listening to Santana on the mp3 player on my new phone, in a curiously ( unnervingly?) tidy Study. Today is the first day of 2013 and I have been decluttering and tidying...
The Study had become a shameful dumping ground for junk and rubbish over the last month, and I also wanted to sort out the Tardis (a cupboard, where I keep a lot of crafting and work supplies - some of which now have other places to live - mainly on my large crafting shelf or in the various plastic stacking boxes which hold bulk supplies of wool, yarn, fabric etc)
so today I was ruthless- lots of stuff went into the recycling bin ( when they finally make a collection here, been three weeks now - just don't ask!) and lots more for the charity shop and rag bank. Nothing added to the landfill bin, which was pleasing.
We are also about to embark on the major refurbishment of yet another room ( yes, yes, I know, but there are only two left to do!) - more of the same (internal insulation, new floor, complete redecoration etc) so all the contents have to come out and be found homes somewhere (!) - most of the stuff has gone into the loft, but as the guest bedroom gets used as a bit of a storage place there was a lot of stuff which needed to be moved somewhere else!
I also have started on a major clear out of my wardrobe - not quite the project 333 challenge, but not far off it! So lots of items have also made their way into the charity shop bag. Some have been earmarked for turning into crochet yarn, for another rug project.
I have spent a few enjoyable hours getting my new android phone sorted out - am very impressed with the features on it and can't help comparing it to the early computers I used at work many years (30 plus!) ago - which probably had a 1000th of the computing power and cost many 100 times more...!
Guess this is old age finally catching up on me!
What did you do for New Year Day?
