Detention Watch Network

Those needing resources on immigration law, asylum, and deportation issues this semester should check out the website of Detention Watch Network, an advocacy group that works to educate the public and policymakers as well as to advocate for detention system reforms. The research pages of this site include links to key U.S. government reports and materials as well as to clearinghouses and other organizations, together with studies and documents from human and civil rights organizations, bar associations, and law school projects focused on the rights of detainees and asylum seekers.

Migration Policy Institute

Interested in immigration law and policy? Whether the information you need is for a course assignment, a clinic, or a research paper, the Migration Policy Institute (MPI) is a great free web source. The MPI web site reflects the scope and resources of "an independent, nonpartisan, nonprofit think tank devoted to the movement of people worldwide." While covering such topics as European migration and asylum seekers, the MPI site also features some very useful sections with resources on United States legislation, policy, and statistical data, including the National Center on Immigrant Integration Policy, the Immigration Data Hub, and the Immigration: Data Matters resource guide to finding and using immigration data.

Immigration in the United States, 1789-1930

Harvard's Open Collections Program offers yet another web-based collection: Immigration to the United States, 1789-1930. This collection includes "approximately 1,800 books and pamphlets as well as 9,000 photographs, 200 maps, and 13,000 pages from manuscript and archival collections" and offers insight into the immigrant experience.

Some examples of material I found while browsing the collection include: a 1908 circular from the Immigration Restriction League; a 1904 pamphlet for persons of Irish Birth and Descent; and a lecture from 1870 on Chinese Labor in America.
