21st Century Library Workshops

The 21st Century Library will hold a series of workshops the week of March 13th in the lower level computer lab. Attend all or just the workshops that interest you. These 50 minute workshops will demonstrate how to extend your legal research skills in specific subject areas. The following workshops are offered.

Monday: March 13th: 12:10 PM: Health Law Research Online: An Introduction

This workshop will introduce the fundamentals of researching health law online. Participants will learn how to find the major federal statutes and regulations pertinent to health law, to research federal health agencies, and to find such relevant secondary sources as medical journal articles, medical dictionaries, and newsletters.

Monday: March 13th: 5:10 PM: Congress Surfing in the 21st Century

No, those terms are not mutually exclusive - if you need Congressional documents, the Web is one of the best places to go. So, if you are struggling to find documents for source gathering, need to do some legislative history research, or just want to see where some of your tax dollars are going.

Wednesday: March 15th: 12:10 PM: Litigation Resources via Lexis & Westlaw

Lexis and Westlaw offer vast resources for all phases of litigation. Learn what these services have to offer, and how to efficiently make use of them. Topics will include accessing briefs, injury valuation, jury instructions, locating and evaluating expert witnesses, obtaining information regarding opposing counsel, locating forms and checklists. Attendance is guaranteed to save you time in the future!

Wednesday: March 15th: 1:10 PM: History Research Online

Online history research?? Not how to dig through old, dusty books and use tricky microfiche? Of course not! For research papers, citation checking, and uncovering the historical background of legal issues in class or at work, many finding tools and full-text materials for historical research are online and easy to use. This workshop will show you where to begin and how to find reliable and authoritative online sources. We'll focus on a basic research strategy that you can apply to any history or legal history topic.

Hope to see many of you! If would like us to give a workshop on any topic, please let us know. Stop by the reference desk or drop a comment in the Suggestion Box.

21st Century Library workshops

What are the 21st Century Library workshops? The librarians have put together a number of 50 minute workshops that identify and demonstrate online resources other than Lexis or Westlaw. The workshops are topical or focus on a specific resource providing descriptions of the resources and why they should be used. Research strategies and tips are a bonus.

Effective and efficient legal research means knowing there are a number of resources available and understanding the purpose of each and when to use them. A common critique we hear from law firm librarians is that students are too quick to use Lexis or Westlaw when another tool is more appropriate for their research task.

21st Century Library workshops goal is to expose our students to additional online tools.

All workshops are held in the lower level computer lab. Registration for a workshop is not required. Look for announcements closer to the dates of the workshops.

Tentative schedule for workshops during the Fall 2007 semester.

Week of 10/1 – Paper Writing resources

Week of 10/15 – Health Law research

Week of 10/29 - U.S. Government Information

Week of 11/5 – LexisNexis Congressional Universe

Research and Source Gathering: Australia

From my cozy spot near the Reference Desk, I've been watching many students face the challenge of their first source gathering assignment for one of the law journals. Among the most challenging sources to locate are cases, statutes, and law journal articles from foreign countries, including Australia, which is is a popular jurisdiction for authors treating family law and other social science-related topics.

To get off to a good start in understanding the landscape of the Australia's government and legal system, including the courts and legislatures of its states and territories, start with two of my favorite research guides: Researching Australian Law, by Nicholas Pengelley and Sue Milne, published on the legal research and technology site LLRX.com; and Update: A Guide to Online Research Resources for the Australian Federal Legal System with some Reference to the State Level, by Petal Kinder, Court Librarian at the High Court of Australia. This and many other country research guides are available on GlobaLex, the site of New York University's Hauser Global Law School Program.

Legal Research Engine

From my cozy spot near the Reference Desk, I've noticed that paper writing research and challenging source gathering assignments are taking up lots of law student time these days. This is a good time for a reminder about Legal Research Engine, one of my favorite online resources that can provide quick help. Developed by Cornell University Law Library, Legal Research Engine searches through a select group of web sites that are sources of authoritative research guides. It comes up with a focused list of guides with direct links to the web sites you need for that specialized and unfamiliar paper topic, or even for tracking down that elusive foreign law. The next time you don't know where to start, or need trustworthy online resources for an unfamiliar topic, check out Legal Research Engine.
