Britney's Belly Brouhaha

Faithful readers of MOTV will possibly remember a post a while back where we tried to get Britney's back (a bit) for all the attacks on her. While YLM and I would never, could never, imagine porting our babes in a car without a car seat, I do believe that if a camera were trained on me 24/7, (and I had any ounce of People magazine worthiness) they would certainly come up with some tasty tidbits to splash across the pages.

The latest attack has come from Britney's, shall we say, performance on the MTV Music Video Awards. (Disclosure: I once worked for this enterprise in my other life.) And a performance it was. I finally decided I needed to see what the row was about and watched a streaming video of the act today. My opinion?

You Go Girl.

Yes, she lip syncs. (Uh, hello J-Lo, Beyonce, me...) Yes, she's been handling her mom, custody battle, underwear needs, photo shoots, friends, people, badly. (Very badly. Britney, honey, please call Jodie Foster and let her give you some guidelines....) But...hello? Guts to get up in front of millions of people in her black sequin bikini and strut it?

Now this is not my cup of tea. I am not a Pussycat Dolls fan, for example. Still, I don't know about you, but I can barely screw up the courage to get in front of my bedroom mirror in my bra and underwear and strut it. Now I agree. She's not a size 2 anymore after having two babies. Let's repeat that. SHE'S NOT A SIZE 2 ANYMORE AFTER HAVING TWO BABIES.

She's also going through one of the ugliest things any one would have to go through -- a divorce, with two small children, where your mom is mad (publicly) at you -- at the ripe age of 25 when I was still trying to figure out what I wanted to be when I grew up.

She needs some help. But let's stop bashing the poor girl because she's got some rollos on her belly. I think we should applaud her for her (possibly insane) courage and gumption.

And we could all learn something from that.

I agree with you almost entirely. I would be THRILLED to have a body that looked like hers does now and I only have one baby.

BUT...if she's not a size 2 anymore (and amen for that!), for the love of god, she shouldn't be trying to dress like she is a size 2!!

Apologies for being incommunicado this week and hope none of you out there are too distraught not to be receiving the usual almost-daily MotV missives. The reason for the silence is that I'm up to my neck, metaphorically-speaking, in research papers for my first grad course assessment. This experience has made me realise how rigorously un-academic I am in my thinking. It has also illuminated how reliant I am on red wine in order to get through endless evenings typing furiously on my laptop, not to mention the fueling of increasingly colorful curses that I feel obliged to aim at the University's online library system which consistently refuses to spit out any of the journals I'm desperate for (I refuse to believe this is 100% due to my technical incompetence...) Oh well, if this is the price one has to pay in order to realize a long-cherished dream then it's not all that bad... No one ever said a mid-life career change would be easy. Wish me luck!

The Grim Reaper

Firstborn is obsessed with death. It started with the odd comment, such as; "Mummy, what happens when you die?" OK, I thought, I was expecting this at some point, what a cute little curious brain she has. So I trotted out all the cosy Heaven stuff and left out all the things that could worry her, such as worms and bones and holes in the ground. This went down pretty well, although somehow Firstborn made the jump from my view of Heaven (filled with love, joy, always warm, never rains, has a huge discount designer shoe outlet and I never have to pay my Visa bill) to her own view of Heaven; a wonderous place where small girls don't have to eat their vegetables before they're allowed pudding, and where Barbie dolls grow on trees. Anyway, I digress. Last week Firstborn started shouting "Kill! Kill!" in a bloodthirsty tone while bashing her hithero-beloved teddy against the wall. This was topped by her purposely flushing her favourite My Little Pony down the loo.
