Texas ready to defend the Alamo from attacks

Daily Caller: Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush warned protesters not to “mess with the Alamo” on Saturday as vandals have targeted other historical sites around the country. Bush said his office is monitoring “social media posts and rumors from protesters who are threatening to come to The Alamo” and said law enforcement stands ready to protect the historical site, which is located in San Antonio, Texas. “The Alamo is the Shrine of Texas Liberty. And it will be defended. My office is closely watching the social media posts and rumors from protesters who are threatening to come to The Alamo,” Bush wrote in a statement he posted to Twitter. “Rest assured we have already deployed, for several weeks and will continue to do so, the Alamo Rangers in partnership with SAPD, The Department of Public Safety and The National Guard to protect this sacred site,” he added. “My message to the protesters is simple: Don’t mess with The Alamo.” Vandals around the country have recently de...

Texas underwater?

San Antonio Express-News/Houston Chronicle: For more than 100 years, people have grumbled that Alamo Plaza is a disgrace to the memory of those who died in battle, and to mission inhabitants whose remains are buried there. Change has come slowly to the city-owned plaza. Even a 17-year-old proposal to close it to motor traffic has been all but ignored. Now, during the 175th anniversary of the siege and battle, a group is pushing for major changes through an "Alamo Plaza Restoration Project," including removal of traffic; a detailed reconstruction of the 1836 compound's main gate and south and west walls; relocation of the 1930s Cenotaph to a nearby site; and increased emphasis on the role of Tejanos who fought for independence from Mexico. The most ambitious elements of the project are relocation of early 1900s buildings on the plaza's west side to support re-creation of the Alamo's west wall, and conversion of the 1930s federal building on the north end to...

Battle of the Alamo Part 2

Image via Wikipedia San Antonio Express-News: A West Texas chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas is accusing DRT President General Patti Atkins and the group’s board of entering “an illegally signed contract” to promote the Alamo . But in a statement to the San Antonio Express-News, the DRT “categorically denies the accusations as groundless.” The flare-up, centering on a one-year, $900,000 contract with William Morris Endeavor Entertainment, signals a rift in the lineage group, which has cared for the Alamo since 1905. Chapter members worry the agreement may pose a financial risk to the DRT or leave the group beholden to contract underwriters who have not been identified. In a Nov. 30 letter, members of the Presidents of Texas Chapter in Odessa said they will hold the 26 women on the DRT’s Board of Management “personally responsible” if Gov. Rick Perry and the Legislature remove the Daughters as Alamo caretakers next year. “We have grave concerns about t...
