Brits do not back Kerry speech on Israel

Daily Mail: The UK Government today launched an unprecedented attack on the US, its closest ally, over John Kerry's condemnation of the Israeli regime as the 'most right-wing in history'. In a highly critical speech on foreign policy yesterday the US Secretary of State criticised Irsaeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu for undermining the two-state solution with his settlement policy in the West Bank. Britain backed a UN Security Council resolution calling for an end to Israel's construction of settlements in the hotly-disputed region but Mr Kerry went further with his strongly-worded personal attack on Mr Netanyahu and his government. A spokesman for Prime Minister Theresa May said it was inappropriate of Mr Kerry, America's top diplomat, to attack the make-up of the democratically-elected Israeli government – a key ally of both the US and Britain. Downing Street also rebuked Mr Kerry for focusing on the single issue of Israeli settlements and not the whole confli...

Britain wants US Marine air wing to use their new carrier

Defense News: The commander of HMS Queen Elizabeth, Britain’s new aircraft carrier, would like to see US Marine Corps F-35Bs and V-22s embark for up to nine months at a time once the warship becomes operational. “We’ll certainly see some footprint aboard the ship. The big question is do they deploy with us much longer term in the future, maybe for six, seven, eight, nine months from when we deploy. That’s what I would love to see,” Capt. Jerry Kyd said. Confirmation that the Royal Navy’s 70,000-ton aircraft carrier force would embark US Marine Corps (USMC) F-35Bs came during a meeting between UK Defence Secretary Michael Fallon and his US counterpart, Ash Carter, in London at the start of September. Fallon said that eventually British aircraft could be deployed on US aircraft carriers. The Queen Elizabeth is currently in the final stage of construction ahead of sea trials, which are expected to get underway in the spring of next year. A second carrier, the Prince of Wales, is...

88 British troops fought off 500 Taliban for months without support

Daily Mail: Outgunned, outmanoeuvred, hopelessly outnumbered and besieged in the Afghan desert, a small band of British soldiers chose to save a final bullet for themselves rather than fall into Taliban hands. For nearly two months, the 88 men of Easy Company – a mix of Paratroopers and the Royal Irish – had faced the overwhelming force and firepower of up to 500 Taliban determined to over-run the remote Helmand outpost of Musa Qala. And their near miraculous survival has been described as a latter day Rorke’s Drift, evocative of the 1879 siege in which 140 British soldiers held off a Zulu force of 3,000, later immortalised in the blockbuster film starring Michael Caine. For 56 days in the autumn of 2006, the men at Musa Qala faced constant fire from fixed machine gun posts and mortars. Hungry and frequently at the point of exhaustion, they were forced to somehow fend off 360-degree attacks from the Taliban, with little protection beyond a series of low mud walls. They used...

'Losers cry, Deal Again'

Washington Post: 2.1 million Brits signed a petition for another EU referendum. They shouldn't hold their breath. Yes. It's actually happening. People in Britain are talking seriously about the possibility of another referendum. A petition calling for another referendum on whether Britain should stay in the European Union has now received at least 2.1 million ... It reminds me of the opening to Larry Gatlin's song Love Is Just A Game . Love is just a game, that everybody plays And when the game is over, not everybody pays Some play the game and lose Some play the game and win The winners walk out laughing, The losers cry, deal again. ...

If you get a chance to see the replay it is worth it.

Looking for the "Mastermind" of Doc plot

Guardian: The plot to mount car bomb attacks in Britain was hatched outside the UK, with the doctors allegedly involved linked to a ringleader or mastermind abroad, counter-terrorism officials believe. One theory is that the alleged plot was orchestrated by one or two jihadists who infiltrated the NHS and indoctrinated others. ... Intelligence sources last night declined to say where the "guiding hand" or mastermind behind the plot was based. It is likely, given the dates on which some of the suspects entered Britain, that the plot was hatched a year ago, or even earlier. Though MI5 insists none of the suspects arrested in connection with the plot were under surveillance, the mobile phones detectives recovered from the would-be car bombs contained details that matched material on the security service database. Counter-terrorism officials say data from the phones and email traffic was checked on the database used by MI5, MI6 and GCHQ, the government's eavesdropping centre....

Brit boycott backlash

Guardian: The prominent British lawyer Anthony Julius has teamed up with Alan Dershowitz, the Harvard law school professor whose clients have included Claus von Bulow and the OJ Simpson defence team, to fight possible boycotts of Israeli universities by UK academics. The pair are planning to publish a paper outlining their objections to a pro-boycott motion passed by British academics last month and Mr Dershowitz has threatened to "devastate and bankrupt" those he believes are acting against Israeli universities. Members of the University and College Union passed a motion at their annual conference instructing leaders to circulate calls for a boycott of Israeli institutions to every UK campus for "information and discussion". Yesterday Mr Julius, who has had a string of high-profile clients and is visiting professor at Birkbeck College, said the UCU's decision had sparked widespread anger. "People are pretty appalled at their stance, what they see are doubl...
