"Paid For By Al Sharpton's Family"
Darth Cheney traveled in style to and from Pakistan this week. The name of the C-17 military transport in which he traveled is "The Spirit of Strom Thurmond."
Given this week's news that Thurmond's family owned members of Sharpton's family, shouldn't the plane be re-christened, "Paid For By Al Sharpton's Family". Or at least have that added as a coda to the name?

Wouldn't It Be Great If Al Sharpton Inherited Strom Thurmond's Estate?
Over the weekend I read that the New York Daily News hired genealogists to look into Al Sharpton's family history, and through that he learned that his family had been owned by Strom Thurmond's family.
Today's news is just as interesting:
WaPo: Sharpton wants DNA test
Wouldn't it be awesome if Al Sharpton is the heir to Strom Thurmond? OK, it's almost impossible, they're probably just fourth cousins once removed, but isn't it fun to imagine ol' Strom's reaction to that one? Tee hee.

Minority Whipping
WaPo: Trent Lott Elected Minority Whip
WaPo's 'The Fix': Mississippi Senator Rises Again
Or, as a commenter at Fark.com put it:
Trent Lott selected as Senate Minority Whip, because if there's one thing that Trent Lott likes, it's whipping minorities.
I saw this comment on Eschaton, who also dug up Lott's prior statements about his love for Strom Thurmond.
I want to say this about my state: When Strom Thurmond ran for president, we voted for him. We're proud of it. And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn't have had all these problems over all these years, either.

Let's Stop Pretending: Roberts is a Far-Right Republican
Why haven't I blogged on John Roberts' confirmation hearings?
Because you know all you need to know about the guy is who he worked for.
Injustice Rehnquist, Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Hogan & Hartson.
Ronald Reagan did not have a bunch of closet liberals or even libertarians sitting in his US Attorney's office sending out blizzards of compassionate memos.
He had hardcore right wing fanatics like John Roberts. John Roberts, to the right of Ted Olsen, Robert Bork and Strom Thurmond.
So, I gotta say, I knew who this guy was from the minute I read his resume. To pretend that he may undertake any confirmation or post-appointment conversion is a hollow and ultimately empty hope.
The corporate media keeps up the pretense that Roberts is a mystery:

New York Times editorial: Too Much of a Mystery
