Bye-bye Google Reader! Hello...?

Hey there, Someday Crafts readers. I just wanted to take a minute and remind you that since Google Reader is not going to exist on Monday, you may need to find a new way to follow Someday Crafts. We love all of our readers and don't want any of you to miss out on any Someday Crafts updates!

As far as I can tell, Google Friend Connect (GFC) is sticking around. So you can still click the "Join this site" button that you see on the sidebar.

If you have your own blog, you should still be able to see the blog updates at the bottom of your dashboard like normal. That's actually my preferred method, since I don't have to open yet ANOTHER window to see what's new with the blogs I follow.

However, if you don't have your own blog or don't utilize this method, you'll need a new way to read the articles from the blogs you've joined. That's where sites likes Bloglovin', Feedly, Digg, and others come in. I think I prefer Bloglovin', but you'll need to go explore them in order to find your personal favorite. We all like things to be personalized in a different way.

Follow on Bloglovin

The best thing about them all though, is that you can easily import all the blogs you follow with Google Reader, so you don't lose any of your information! Isn't that great? Plus, these other sites make it really easy to find other content and websites that you might like. Most of them also have apps for your smartphones to make reading on the go even easier!

Do you have a favorite blog reader?

Guest Blogger - Creative Paige - Confessions of a Tech-Savvy Woman -

Confessions of a Tech-Savvy Woman...

I'm Paige from the Creative Paige...I'm excited to be here at Someday Crafts!

Let's see...I'm a graphic designer/mommy by day and a blogger/crafty gal by night. My husband, my 2 boys and I moved to Puebla, Mexico 8 months ago and are enjoying the adventures of living in another country. However, this presents many challenges with being crafty...there is no Hobby Lobby! or Joanns! or even a Michaels...I know, it's tragic. So, I have to find ways to make things from the limited stores available. However, I did bring a supply of mod podge with me from the States (a girl cannot craft without it!). I hope that you take some time to jump over to my site!

So, I have a confession: I love technology. Like I said before, I'm a graphic designer, so I spend hours each day working on my computer for my job, but I still love it. I love reading new things on blogs, I love finding interesting resources and emailing them to people who I know would like them.

I am a self-proclaimed google expert...not an expert at anything really...just an expert at finding out how to do anything online. From google I've learned how to make my own laundry soap, make homemade marshmallows, sew superhero capes, decide if my baby has a dangerously high temperature, look up Spanish words that are stumping me and so so much more. If you could only see the number of times a day that I google something...it would be ridiculous...and some of my searches would probably be quite humorous. However, in all of that searching and surfing the web, I have found a few resources that I believe are so helpful in my day-to-day life. I thought I'd share them with you and in turn, I expect you to share your favs with me as well!

1. Feedly - this is a magazine-style blog reader...it can feed straight from your Google reader, however, I think it makes everything look so much better and more organized. You can also save certain articles, copy parts of them, and much more. I use this every single day to catch up on my blogs. Unfortunately, I never catch up on them...I follow too many.

2. Google Translate - now I know that this one may not apply to everyone, but living outside the U.S. - I use it EVERYDAY! When my son's school sends home paperwork -into Google Translate it goes. When I'm reading the back of a cake mix box, into Google Translate it goes. It's a great tool and relatively accurate.

3. Supercook.com - I love to cook, but I run out of ideas very quickly. I also don't like having to go to the store everyday to find a specific ingredient, so I really like Supercook. You can type in the ingredients that you have and it will search the internet for recipes using those ingredients. It's really helpful if you have a jar of something in your fridge that you need to use up before it goes bad.

4. AbstractFonts.com - If you love fonts, this is a great place for tons of free fonts...I go there all the time to find exactly the font I'm looking for - from handwriting fonts, to retro fonts, to scary (Halloween) fonts. It's my fav.

5. Clker.com - free vector clipart - some of it's lame, but some of it is great. You can find almost anything clipart-wise and then download it into whatever format you need.

6. ColourLovers.com - need a color palette for a project? This is the place - you can find color palette inspriation for decorating your home, designing a website, branding your logo, designing a printable...just about anything. You can also sort them by the most popular and see what colors are trendy. They've also got a great selection of patterns.

7. Hipmunk.com - a great site for finding airline tickets...the main difference is a visual chart of available flights. You can find the flight with the shortest layovers or the shortest flight times very easily. It even lets you sort by the flight with the least "agony"...an agony-less flight sounds like heaven when you have little kids!

8. Wordle - a silly little site that let's you make those fun word clouds...type in the words you want...pick your colors and you've got a cute printable for your home.

9. Kidzui - a kid friendly website browser - your kids can play games, watch clean YouTube videos, look at pictures, etc, without you having to worry about them stubbling across inappropriate content. Let your kids explore the internet without being worried and without having to watch their every move. The best thing...it's free.

10. Flickr - I know everyone knows about uploading pictures to flickr to share, but if you pay the $25/year for the Flickr Pro account, you get unlimited photo storage, unlimited video storage (for 90 or less videos). We use it as a backup for all of our pictures. We had friends a few years ago whose computer crashed and they lost the photos of their baby's birth...they were unable to be recovered. Since then, we have gone through major precautions not to let that happen to us. We back up our photos on our external hard drive and then upload all of them to our Flickr Pro account...just in case. It also clears up room on our computer and we can share our photo albums with family, so they can always see up-to-date pictures of the kiddos.

And bonus number 11 -Amazon Universal Wishlist Browser button - this little button you install on your browser toolbar lets you add any item (that's for sale) to your amazon wishlist. That way you can start compiling your Christmas wishlist all year long! On a site that has something you love? Just click the little button and add it to your wish list. You can also have multiple lists (for your husband, kids, etc) and add items to those lists as well. All your wish lists in one handy, dandy place.

I hope you've enjoyed these online resources for making your life easier...now, hit me with your favs...anything and everything. I'd love to add some new bookmarks to my browser!

Did you find these helpful? Here's a sample of other goodies you'll find over at the Creative Paige:

P.S. These companies/websites have no idea who I am. I just like them so much, I'm willing to give them free advertising. Aren't I nice?

I wish I was a techy and good at technology! This was a great list and I learned a lot from this. I never knew about some of these things. Looks like The Creative Paige is a good place for me to read!!! Visit there and learn more today.

A Little Heart-To-Heart About Blogging

I want to thank everyone who guest blogged for me while I was away on maternity leave. The tutorials were awesome and it was nice to have a break! Hopefully, all of you enjoyed the guest bloggers and found some new blogs to read! To look back over the tutorials, click on the "Guest Blogger" link under Labels or HERE.

I can't believe that Remington is already 6 weeks old!

Time passes so quickly when you have 3 kids! Because I am so busy, the days and nights fly by.

Remington is such a good baby! He rarely is fussy and sleeps well at night. My other two kids have adapted well to this big change in their life. They love their brother!

I love my little guy! There is something so sweet and special about the bond between a baby and its mommy. He knows me, loves me, wants me and brings me such joy!

Our life, as a family of 5, is truly a party. I'm loving the new addition and all the fun moments it has brought. We are just so blessed to have happy and healthy kids! I look forward to all the coming moments that I get to share with these incredible people. Family rocks!

Thanks for all the kind messages and little notes about my family and me. It means so much to me that you care about my life outside of blogging. A few of you have asked how I have been handling everything ,and for the most part, it hasn't been too bad. Unfortunately, I think life is going to change in a few weeks when school starts and we have to be out of the house before 10am!!! I have been doing A LOT of thinking about how I am going to handle everything - especially this blog.

There are days when I love blogging and there are days when I don't want to turn the computer on, but I do because I feel obligated. There are moments when I just want to quit for so many reasons. I compare. I get discouraged. I wonder why isn't my blog bigger, better and more popular. Some days, I spend way too much on the computer and not enough time giving my kids the full attention they need. Some times I wonder if my blog makes any positive difference at all. Does my blog matter? Any of you feel this similar way?

I didn't start this blog to make money. I started this blog to save projects of things I wanted to learn how to make because I am not a very crafty person. When I started getting some followers, I had this crazy thought that "maybe I can make some money off this blog." And so, I went for it. I spent more and more time highlighting cool projects and trying to build a blog. It became one of my jobs. I had no idea what I was doing.

And now, three years later, I still don't know what I am doing. I do make some money, but not enough to justify the time I spend blogging. The original intent of my blog has definitely changed because I don't have much time to make the projects I am highlighting. I ask myself often "Why?" Why am I doing this? For those of you wondering, I earn about $140-$180 a month from this blog and I spend probably 80-90 hours a month on this blog. That's not a great income!

I've been doing a lot of thinking and some things will be changing on this blog. I will be accepting more guest bloggers. If you want to guest blog, shoot me an email. I'd love to have you. I plan to have two posts a day like I had the past month. I still plan to host the Wednesday party and Giveaway Directory on Thursday. I will highlight a charity once a month. I've got to cut down on the amount of time I spend on the computer and this blog. It just isn't worth it to me. However, I hope you will continue to come to this blog for inspiration because I still plan to highlight amazing ideas found throughout blogland.

Please make submissions of your best projects. Please volunteer to guest post! Please keep creating projects that inspire me and others!!! Just don't expect me to reply to every email I receive and every comment that is made. I just can't do it! The world is in need of creativity and joy!

Come back and read the next post to see one of the major reasons I need to spend less time on this blog!!! A great opportunity has come my way!

Fun New TP Roll Blog and Paper Towel Roll Marble Run

I just discovered a great new blog where the "main ingredient" is toilet paper rolls and the like called TP Crafts. While many of the activities are for kids, (especially appropriate for those of you with pre-school, kindergarten-aged kids), there are some other great tips and fun projects for an avid crafter.
.
I'm loving this marble run made from paper towel rolls. Any age kid would love this activity. You've got to visit this blog!

Blog News!!!

(Button made by Kim at 733!)
I am really excited to take my kids to Disneyland. They've heard A LOT about it from other people, but haven't got to experience the joy...yet. After we got our very late tax return, we planned a trip to Disneyland! Since I will be gone for about a week (from Oct. 3 through 9), I will be holding "Disney Days" at Someday Crafts.
.
What is "Disney Days?" I will be featuring tutorials, ideas, tips and hopefully some giveaways related to Disney characters and Disneyland! There will be some very cool ideas you will want to bookmark for your next Disney trips or for your kids who love Disney characters!
.
SEND ME LINKS TO YOUR DISNEY POSTS!!! I'm looking for anything that corresponds with the theme of "Disney Days!" If you have a giveaway, I will be charging a reduced rate of $5! That's cheap to advertise your business. Since I don't know how many submittals I will get, I don't know how long "Disney Days" will run. It will be sometime between Oct. 3- Oct. 9. Stay tuned for a week of fun! Take the button, paste it on your blog to prepare for "Disney Days."
.
Categorically Crafting Fridays!
Because I do have a part-time job working at a Montessori and have young kids, I am thinking about cutting back on Friday's Categorically Crafting. It takes a lot of time to compile a lot of posts of a certain topic on a weekly basis. For now, I am looking for bloggers who would like to compile the round-up for the category. At the top, I will post you button and a link to your blog as the compiler. You can choose the category and even feature one project from you blog. If you are interested in advertising you blog in this way, please send me an email at somedaycrafts@gmail.com
.
Changes in Advertising
Also, I am happy/sad to announce some changes in my advertising. Because my rates have been so low, I have been overwhelmed with the people and businesses who want to use my blog as a way to increase their business. I am thrilled to help mommy business and other crafty business, but there is no way that I can keep up with the requests I have received and keep a high quality blog! I will not let this blog become a blog of advertising! I have tried to keep it to one giveaway a week and one business spotlight a week. Hopefully, you as viewers, appreciate that! I would also appreciate you checking out the businesses who do sponsor my blog. Click on the buttons on my sidebar, enter the giveaways, take a look at the reviews/spotlights! Without these, I would be forced to get either another part-time job or go full-time!
.
The following are the changes in advertising. If you have contacted me before this post about advertising and have not yet been billed yet, the former rate applies. My rates are still MUCH lower than blogs that receive similar traffic. I will now be offering advertising at the bottom of posts.
.
1 month button on sidebar - $15
3 months button on sidebar - $35
.
Button at the bottom of a post - $2 (minimum of 3 posts)
.
Sponsor of Whatever Goes Wednesday (includes button, link and picture of product) - $10
Sponsor of Whatever Goes Wednesday (if you have a button on my sidebar) - $5
.
Giveaway (you write the post) - $10 plus giveaway item of at least $20
Giveaway (I write the post) - $17 plus giveaway item
.
Business Highlight (you write the post) - $14
Business Highlight (I write the post) - $21
.
Review - Depends on the item. Must be over $20 worth of product.
.
Thanks for your support of this blog and for viewing this blog! If you have feedback (good or bad) about this blog, please email me at somedaycrafts.blogspot.com
Thanks.
