Surface Tension

Another one of the Amsterdam Lightfestival by Tom Biddulph and Barbara Ryon from the UK.
With their line drawings of light the artists transformed part of Amsterdam's fanous canal into a city street that has "drowned".

It is a spooky vision of what could happen if sea levels keep rising and the risk of disastrous floods in the Netherlands continues to increase.

Reflections

Another picture of  an object at the Amsterdam Lightfestival, reflecting in the canal water.

And the endless parade of canalboats that led their passengers along the light objects, what we did on foot. Linking to "Weekend Reflections"

Light festival (3) Hiding in the Wolf's Lair

This was a special one, these are the silhouettes of hidden figures in the Artis Zoo. Despite the fact that it was a favoured walkabout among German soldiers during WW2,  Artis was also a safe haven for around 200-300 people in hiding. People were even hiding above the enclosures of the lions and the wolves.

It was really very dark here to photograph.

Light Festival (2) Big Bang

This illuminated bomb hangs threateningly in the air as though to hit the water. There is nothing that symbolises disruption  more as a bomb according to the artists of UxU Studio.

It turns slowly into blue light.

When you come closer you discover something surprising about the artwork. It's covered in soft feathers!

Light Festival

The Amsterdam Lightfestival was a bit disappointing this year. The objects were not so spectacular as other years. This is the famous Skinny Bridge transformed into a mass of mixed lines by artist Krijn de Koning.

The Cracks made by Karolina Howorka in the Montelbaans tower.

Monday Mural

The theme of the light show in Amsterdam was " Biomimicry", a new science that studies the examples from nature and mimics or used as inspiration to solve problems in the human domain (industrialized societies) to, for example a solar cell inspired by a leaf. Nature as a yardstick.
So, are you still there on a monday morning after this lecture?
Anyway this projection on the building of the "Hortus Botanicus" is called "Human Beeing".I saw some bees at the left side and found an explanation on intermet about the project "here"
It is too long to put it all in the post,  so when you are interested take a look.

Amsterdam Light Festival

Yesterday evening I visited the Amsterdam Light Festival. Several artist have made light objects along and in the canals and parks. You can do an "Illuminade Walking Route" and a Boat Route. We chose for the walking, the boat you can see passing by here.

The object "Nexus" made by Hungarian artist "Victor Vicsek" changed colours.

It made nice reflections so I am linking to "Weekend Reflections"

Reflection

An image of the Amsterdam Light festival last December.  This object was named "Infinite Support" and designed by a dutch collective  "Lightform", four friends who try to find exciting applications of new technologies. This was a kind of box to sit in and look into an endless depth with the help of mirrors and changing colours.

These two boys were quite impressed by the object.

Amsterdam Light Festival (4)

One of the most impressive objects was this floating letter in the river Amstel,
The gently rocking letter is named "Dearest Friend..." and has been written by Dutch philosopher Baruch Spinoza (1632-1677). Spanish artist Darya von Berner made this object.

What the letter is about you can read here.

A few days later I watched the construction by daylight.

Here you have a better view of the handwriting of Spinoza.

And a few steps from his letter is a statue of Spinoza himself.

Amsterdam Light Festival (3)

"Bands of Friendship" made by Santosh Gujar and Vikas Patil from India, is based on the coloured friendships bracelets that many people wear around their wrist.

Looking from the frontside you see a a colourful tunnel.

I liked the twist to the right. Linking "Our World Tuesday"

Amsterdam Light Festival (2)

This artpiece, made of grog or chamotte clay is named "Patience" and represents the invisible bond that is called friendship. The dog is hesitating to enter the tunnel and has to trust his boss to reach him. It is made by dutch artist Marcello Pieter Stokhof.

Amsterdam Light Festival

The "Camp-Fire"made by Wilhelmusvlug from the Netherlands is ment as a meetingpoint for people but without the Twitter volatility and the one direction communication of today. It must be a safe haven for everyone just to sit by and watch the fire or have a good conversation.

"Constell.ation" by LIKEarchitects from Portugal. The arches are made of plastic tubes lighted wit special ledlights which strenghten the red colour. You can use your imagination and see an Amsterdam arch bridge, or even the red light district.

"Re(bi)cycle Dome" by Vasili Popov from Russia. He thinks the bicycle wheel is the ultimate gadget of the Netherlands and tried to use it as a building block. With the help of a computer program he made the dome with the wheels spread over it.The public has to use an old water pump to have the lights shining and changing colours.
This is my last post about the light festival so far, maybe I will have another look because there is still more to see. In the meantime you can have a look sccollections hubby's blog for more pictures.

Shadow play

Another object of the Amsterdam Light Festival, called "Triangolini" made by Israelian artist "Hogar Elazari". It is a flat light wall covered with a pattern of a number of layers semitransparent triangular stickers. The public can pull a sticker off and move it to another place and so change the pattern.

For me it was a nice shadow play to watch the people and making photos.

Amsterdam lightfestival 2014

Since a few years we have a lightfestival in Amsterdam during the dark winterweeks. I have posted about the objects in previous years here. Every year artists are invited to express themselves with light. This one is called "178 Bottles, 1 Message", made by Saskia Hoogendoorn & Lieuwe Martijn Wijnands. It represents the 178 nationalities of the  800.000 inhabitants of  Amsterdam. All those people are the beating heart of the city. The bottles have ledlights which are controlled by passing public.

The lightbridge made by designer collective Tjep,  is an ode to the famous Amsterdam bow bridges which are in winter always illuminated.

The Gatekeepers at the entrance of the Hermitage Museum by Irma de Vries. "The standing guards ensure that the philosophy of the seventeenth century is not lost".
Another time I show you more of the "Illuminade walk".

Festive lights

The big Christmas tree at Dam square in Amsterdam 24 meters high, brought from Germany and with 40.000 lights.

The department store The Bijenkorf.

The shopping centre Magna Plaza.

The House of Cards, part of the Amsterdam Light Festival.

And the ring on the canal bridge, which changes colours.

I like this season in Amsterdam with all the different lights in the city.
