Medieval city

The city of Amersfoort has a well-preserved and protected medieval centre. This is the "Onze-Lieve-Vrouwentoren" ( The Tower of Our Lady), one of the tallest medieval church towers in the Netherlands at 98 metres (322 ft). The construction of the tower and the church was started in 1444. The church was destroyed by a gunpowder explosion in 1787, but the tower survived. The nickname of the tower is "Lange Jan" (Long John).

One of the medieval houses around the church square.

A house with a typical  stepped-gable from 1602

The tower is by its length visible everywhere in the city.

Terraces

Spring has returned and so have the outside terraces. But the blankets for the cold are still at hand!

Holiday

We started our holiday to Copenhagen in the city of Amersfoort where we had booked a hotel close to the place where our tourbus would depart the next morning very early. We walked into the city to find a restaurant to have diner.

And bumped into a jazzfestival in the center of the city.

We had a nice diner with the sounds of the music coming into the cafe. This was the dessert of SC.

The square was packed with people enjoying the musicians playing.

The music was so whipping that we decided to join the party when everybody started to dance.

It was fun to see how everybody was moving, a little or exuberant, even we moved our hips!
It was a nice start of the journey.

Ringing a bell.

A sign seen in Amersfoort which says "Dutch Carillon School".
I must admit I never knew there was a special school for playing the bells. I wonder if there are bells inside this school and how the neighbours feel about that...

Koppelpoort

The Koppelpoort is a medieval gate in the Dutch town Amersfoort. Completed around 1425, the gate combines land- and water-gates and is part of the second city wall of Amersfoort, which was constructed between 1380 and 1450.

Lost Leg

This 6 meters high leg, made by artist Henk Visch (1950), I saw in the city of Amersfoort.
He made over the years, several versions of this sculpture, named "Again" . The first one, a gold of 101 cm high he made in 1990.

This large copy in green patinated bronze he made this year on behalf of a Housing Association and is intented for a residential area in the city of Haarlem. It was in Amersfoort only for an exhibition.
When watching his website I noticed I had posted another sculpture by him before here in Rotterdam.

Weekend Reflections

The window of an office building in Amersfoort reflects a weird combination of the surroundings and the skaters on the glass. See for more Weekend Reflections here.

Medieval remains

The "Kamperbinnenpoort" in Amersfoort is one of the three medieval gates which are left in the innercity. It is one of the last remains of the inner town-wall which was built around the town and dates from the 13th century.

And this is the other side of the gate.

There are several well preserved old houses.

An old cafe.

The Sint-Joris Church was originally built in 1248 but has been rebuild several times and now dates from the 15th century. In my post of last Sunday I showed you some other photos of Amersfoort.

Monday Mural

I don't know you can call this a mural, but I want to show you anyway. In the main hall of the Central Trainstation in Amersfoort are the images of two employees of the railway company pictured on the glass entrance. I think they sticked the image to the glass but it must be something for them to hang there visible for everybody this huge.

Tower of the Lady

A view of  the shopping street in the innercity of Amersfoort, a municipality and the second largest city in the province of Utrecht in central Netherlands. The city has a well preserved and protected medieval centre. The "Tower of the Lady" you see in the background is one of the tallest medieval church towers in the Netherlands at 98 metres (322 ft) and dates from 1444.

The tower is so tall you see it everwhere when walking in the city.

When standing in front I could hardly manage to make a picture of the complete tower. The church was destroyed by an explosion in 1787 but the tower survived.

It is now the reference point of the RD coordinate system , the coordinate grid used by the Dutch topographical service: the coordinates are (155.000, 463.000) You have to read the link to understand this I think, I don't I am afraid.

This line in the pavement in front of the tower is pointing to the Zero point in the middle of the tower from the  measurement of the land registry.

Monday Mural

A mural along a pathway in the city Amersfoort. I like the bright colours and the pictures as in a children's book.
