Taphophil Tragics # 9

This is another grave at the cemetery Zorgvlied in Amsterdam where many dutch famous people are buried. Here lies "Ton van Duinhoven" (1921-2010). He was a dutch journalist, actor and copywriter, but he is best remembered as a comic in a satirical television program "Hadimassa" and his commercial spots for a biscuit firm "Jamin". He was married to the actress "Ina van Faasen" who died in 2011 and is buried in  the same grave. Her name is on the little sign, but I think it still has be carved out in the stone.

Taphophile Tragics # 8

This is the grave of "Willem Wagenaar" (1909-1999) at the cemetery Zorgvlied in Amsterdam.
He was a painter, art gallery owner, art teacher and surrealist. He owned a little art shop in Utrecht which he made a magical centre of the dutch surrealism in 1930. During WWII almost all his paintings were destroyed an he even was prisoned. After the war he worked as movie-operator in a Amsterdam cinema.
In 1980 a meeting place for surrealistic artists in a Amsterdam cafe was started where a few artists met each other among Willem, although he was very old, he was still very smart.
This painting of the famous Spanish bullfighter Manolete he made in 1942.

Taphophile Tragics # 3

Last summer I was at a cemetery in Amsterdam called "Zorgvlied". It is situated along the river Amstel and it is possible to have the coffin transported by boat for a funeral which is very special.
The cemetery dates from 1870, the location used to be a manorial estate with an English country style garden with many trees.

Many well known Dutch people as writers and actors are burried here and you can even get a map at the entrance to find all the graves. You can see some in my former posts here

It is a nice parc to wander around and admire the stylish graves.

The newer graves are often artistic because of the many artistically-minded people layed to rest here.

A stone seat at the cemetery Zorgvlied, with the falling leaves and the graves around you can have a feeling of transitoriness. But the poor woman carrying the weight maybe take of one's mind a little.

Weekend Reflections

At the cemetery "Zorgvlied" in Amsterdam the grave of "Frank Govers" a famous dutch fashion designer who died in 1997. He was inspired by the hippies in the sixties and later designed the "boho chic" in the seventies. He was the first fashion designer in the Netherlands who made a commercial on television for washing power which was not done in the ninetees. But it was a big hit and everybody remembers his voice. Cemetery

The cemetery "Zorgvlied" along the river Amstel in Amsterdam is like the "Pere Lachaise" in Paris. Many well known dutch people are laid as actors, authors and artists are laid to rest here.  Visitors are walking  around with a plan to find the special graves. We didn't  but found several of them on our own. I was surprised to find the grave of the sculptor "Hildo Krop" who I admire very much and have mentioned many times on my blog, the one who decorated the bridges in Amsterdam.

The second I found was of "Annie M.G.Schmidt". She is a famous writer of children books  every child in the Netherlands has grown up with her books. She also wrote texts for musicals and theater-songs.
