Islamic Creed - A talk by Ustadh Ali Ataie

Video also uploaded here

Notes I made from the video presentation
Creed comes from the Latin word Credo (I believe). Arabic word is Aqeeda (meas a set of beliefs which are BINDING on Muslims).

3 areas of Studying Creed:

1. Theology (about God). An obligatory field of study for every Muslims. Muslims should have some level of theological education. Goal of studying theology is to draw nearer to the Divine.

2. Prophetology (nature and function of Prophets)

3. Supra rational transmission. Events known through Naql (Sacred Texts) eg Night journey and ascension of the Prophet or standing on the concourse for the Day of Judgement.
Terms:

Proto-orthodox: forerunners of orthodoxy

Heterodox: Deviant thinking (heresy)

Orthodox: straight thinking

Kyrigma: early Christian proclamation
Pattern of development of Creeds:

Proclamation (Risalah) – Clarification – Codification (canonisation of /creedal literature)

Creedal language clarifies positions and is responsive

How heterodox groups influenced the codification and canonisation of Islamic formulation of Creedal Literature:

Khwarij (Kharihites) at the time of the end of the first century of the Muslims. They had a very puritanical theology. Ali RA was killed in a mosque in Iraq by a Khwarij in 661 CE

Shia. They came to believe Ali was an infallible imam who was ordained by God to become the Caliph. The largest heterodox sect in Islam today.

Mujassimah (anthropomorphists).

Jabariyah (Determinists). They believe man has no free will and thus they denied the existence of Hell.

Qadariyyah (Dualists). They believed man had absolute free will. God has nothing to do with evil. This was their answer to theodicy.

Mutazilah (rationalists). Mutazilites were the most challenging to orthodoxy. Part of the reason was that they ruled the Caliphate for over 200 years and would persecute proto-orthodox scholars for espousing certain beliefs. Mutazilites believed the Quran is created. Ahmad Bin Hanbal was tortured by Caliph Mamun. Mutazilites denied some other supra-rational events such as punishment in the grave, Prophet travelling physically in the Isra wa al Miraj (sp?), bodily resurrection after death.

They rejected divine attributes, they considered this to be imputing plurality on the Deity. Sunni perspective is that the Divine Attributes weren’t attached or detached from the Deity.

Mutazilites also believed works gave salvation. This is a misnomer even today, many Christian polemicists say Muslims believe in works salvation. The orthodox Sunni position is actually that a person is only saved by the grace of God, not by their deeds. The deeds are a by-product in faith in God.

Codification

By the late 3rd and early 4th century of Islam

Great codifiers of creed (3 big names)

d. 944 Abu Mansur al Maturidi. Was from Samarqand (Persian)

d. 936 936 Abu Hasan Al Ashari from Iraq.

These two men worked independently but came to very similar conclusions on creeds. Traditional definition of a Sunni Muslim is somebody who adheres to one of these theological schools of thought or both. Some say there is a third school, the Athari school

Some differences between the two: Asharis believe a woman could have been a Prophet (an opinion amongst the Asharis is that Mary and the wife of the Pharaoh were prophetesses). A bigger difference here, Asharis say intellect must be aided by Revelation to know God (to arrive at true theology) whilst Maturidis believed the intellect was sufficient to know God.

Asharis believe there are four conditions that make it incumbent on someone to become a Muslim:

Intellect

Maturity

Sound senses (cannot be blind and death, can be either/or)

A correct Prophetic summons (Dawatu Saheeha) should have reached that person (message to be reached in a good/correct form). They are not responsible to believe in God if this is not the case. [This is unique in the Ashari opinion, however the Maturidis accept the 3 conditions above]

Abu Hasan Al Ashari was a Mutazilite scholar for 30 years and left that movement and became a great Sunni codifier.

d. 933 Abu Jafar At-Tahawi (from Egypt). A contemporary of Imam Ashari and Imam Maturidi. His creedal articulation is considered to be valid by both.As time went on on, his creedal treatise became the most popular. He basically summarized the opinions of the other two. He’s leanings are more towards Maturidi in his aqeedah. His opinions weren’t codified. There could have have been a third school but his teachings weren’t codified. It’s the simplest and most popular creed. The Christian, former Archbishop of Cantebury, Rowan Williams, recommends this treatise to other Christians to help them understand Islamic theology.

These three men refined and systematized the beliefs of their predecessors.

Concluding comments

Islamic creeds did not fall out of the sky. Islamic codified creeds were the product of three centuries of rigorous scholarship in the face of other religious traditions, heterodox understandings as well as sociopolitical factors therefore creedal literature tends to be responsive and polemical in nature.

Ben Shapiro Refuted by Ali Ataie and James White: "The Myth of the Tiny Radical Minority"

James R White, a Christian apologist, responds to Ben Shapiro by appealing to consistency by stating most Christians would be considered radical too if the poll asked if they believed Jesus would return and everybody would worship Jesus.

James White Rebukes Ben Shapiro For Saying That The Majority Of Muslims Are Radical

Note: James White called the type of Sharia practiced in Saudi Arabia and Afghanistan "frightening and barbaric". I suppose, out of consistency, James believes the law in the Old Testament is "barbaric and frightening" too (a law which he believes was given by the Father, the Son (now known as Jesus) and the Holy Spirit)

Dr Ali Ataie on FB writes in response to Ben Shapiro's "The Myth of the Tiny Radical Muslim Minority" by also appealing to consistency and differing interpretations of texts:

Here's something I disagree with Ben on. It's amazing how that intellect can suddenly take a dive. This video is a smokescreen. Shari'ah law is part and parcel of every single Muslim's identity. Ben doesn't bother to define what exactly shariah is because he is fully satisfied with your perception of it as being a Draconian penal code from 1400 years ago. Ben is an orthodox Jew who no doubt also believes in the Torah and Talmud.

The five books of Moses are dripping with violence BUT... Ben has his own way of dealing with those texts... right? So what leads him to believe that the vast majority of Muslims do not deal with their violent texts in a similar fashion? How many stonings and hand amputations are happening right now in the Muslim majority world? Where's the data? Thus to say that a Muslim who believes in shari'ah is a radical is like saying a Jew who believes in halakhah is a radical... ALL of them.

Ben fails to define the nuances, immutables (thawabit), variables (mutaghayyarat), contexts, and interpretations of shari'ah that Muslims understand just by being Muslim. Have you read the Talmud? LORD have mercy! How does Ben deal with the homicidal, pedophilic, anti-Christian, racist rants of its rabbis? It seems that whoever considers the Talmud to be sacred is a radical. According to Pew (2013) most American Jews feel somewhat or very emotionally attached to Israel. Israel. A country that has ethnically cleansed its indigenous population since its inception and is now building on occupied territory. This is illegal according to international law. I guess all of those American Jews are radicals. Nice try Ben

Quran’ic Exegesis of al-Ikhlas as a Corrective of Trinitarian Theo-Christology by Ali Ataie

(v. 1) As stated earlier, the word Allah is the proper Name of God that shares an etymology with the Hebrew (in pluralis majestatis) Elohim (אֱלֹהִים), probably from the root a-li-ha (ألِهَ) meaning “to go to and fro in fear and perplexity” or from aleph-waw-lamed (אול), meaning “strength and power” and related to the Arabic Form II awwala (أول), “to interpret” or “find the origin of.” Ash’arite theologians offer the following brief definition of Allah: “A proper name denoting the Essence (which is) the Necessary Existent; the one deserving of all perfection and transcendent above all deficiencies” (علم على ذات الواجب الوجود، المستحق لجميع الكمالات المتنزه عن جميع النقاءص).

The Qur’an is confirming in principle that the God of Muhammad is the same God of the biblical prophets, including Abraham, Moses, and Jesus. The word Ahad (أحد) is taken by Suyuti as either a permutative (بدل) or a second predicate (خبر ثان), with Huwa as subject and the Exalted Expression (لفظ الجلالة), i.e. Allah, as first predicate.

Tantawi says that the Exalted Expression as predicate indicates the occasion of the surah’s Revelation (سبب النزول) in which a group of Jews approached the Prophet asking about the identity of his God - “Who is He (Huwa)?” This is described in detail by al-Wahidi. As discussed in chapter two, the pronoun Huwa, spelled ha-waw and meaning “He (is),” is close to the meaning of the enigmatic tetragrammaton (Shem HaMeforash) spelled yod-he-waw-he (יהוה), if we consider this to be the imperfect tense of the verb hawah (הוה), meaning to “to be,” thus “He is” (yihweh), and translated as ὁ ὤν ([“I am] He who is”) in the LXX (from the 1p sing. Ehyeh [Exo. 3:14]). According to the Mishnah, the Shem HaMeforash was only articulated in the Temple by the High Priest (HaCohen HaGadol) and was believed to be the most exalted Name of God, the actual Name of His Essence in distinction to “Allah/Elohim” which indicated His Essence. Thus Huwa, or Hahut (هاهوت) according to Ibn al-’Arabi, is believed to be al-Ism al-’Azam (الإسم الأعظم), the very Name of God’s Essence according to al-Razi.

To put it in Philonic terms, Allah (الله)/Elohim (אֱלֹהִים) = Ho Theos (ο θεος) while Huwa (هو)/Yihweh (יהוה) = Ho On (ὁ ὤν).

The usage of Ahad as opposed to Wahid (واحد) is intended to confirm the fundamental creedal statement of the Children of Israel (بني إسرائيل), i.e. the Shema of Deut. 6:4: “Hear O Israel! The Lord our God, the Lord is One (Echad)” (שְׁמַע יִשְׂרָאֵל יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵינוּ יְהוָה אֶחָֽד); and confirmed by Christ in Mark 12:29 (ἀπεκρίθη ὁ Ἰησοῦς ὅτι πρώτη ἐστίν ἄκουε Ἰσραήλ κύριος ὁ θεὸς ἡμῶν κύριος εἷς ἐστιν).
Also, while wahid denotes one numerically and thus does not negate the existence of other “ones,” ahad, being also anarthrous, denotes utter uniqueness, one of a genus. In addition, Ahad negates the henotheism of the pre-Islamic Arabs who certainly affirmed that Allah was Wahid, but also acknowledged the existence of lesser deities.

With respect to Christianity, the Qur’an repudiates the belief that God has a “Son” (ولد) in the Trinitarian sense by stating that “Allah is only One (واحد) God” (Q 4:171.5). Thus while Allah is numerically one (واحد), the term wahid also denotes His “internal oneness,” i.e. He is only one person (hypostasis; Arab. nafs; Heb. nefesh); there is no multiplicity in the godhead and He shares His Essence with no one and nothing else.

This is the heart of the Qur’an’s critique of Trinitarianism. There are not multiple hypostatic (personal) pre-eternals; the attributes (sifat) of God are not separate and distinct hypostatic entities. The usage of Ahad in this ayah (112:1), however, denotes God’s “external oneness” thus not allowing any creature to be the incarnation of that indivisible Essence (ousia) since He is transcendent of space, time, and materiality, contra both Incarnational Modalism (Monarchism) and Trinitarianism. In this vein, Hosea (11:9) says: “Indeed I am God and not man” (כִּי אֵל אָֽנֹכִי וְלֹא־אִישׁ).

Koine Greek Analysis: Did the Disciples Worship Jesus p? Ali Ataie.

Trinitarian Christians claim the disciples worshipped Jesus p yet we see a linguistic analysis of the Greek shows us something different. The word in question proskuneo does no refer to worship. Proskuneo is a reference to kissing the hand (i.e. showing reverence and respect, not worship). In the Bible the same verb, proskuneo, is used to show respect to Jewish priests and Angels.

The Greek word for worship which is only due to God is latreuo.

Responding to Christians who boast they call God 'Father'. Ali Ataie.

Christian missionaries often claim they have some special relationship with God because the New Testament uses the word 'Father' yet as Ali Atiae points out it's a figurative term and the Muslims have a term which reflects the figurative meaning of 'the Father' i.e. the One who takes care of you in stages. This term is Rabb. This term is used in the Quran for Allah.  For more from Ali Ataie please see here

Does the Quran include Mary in the Christian Trinity? Ali Ataie Answers

Ali Ataie answers a Christian missionary polemic concerning this Verse of the Quran. Some Christian missionaries wrongly claim the Quran misrepresents their Trinity by including Mary in it, Ali Ataie answers them with great eloquence and erudition. I hope this will enlighten the Christian missionaries and discourage them from repeating their argument in the future. For more from Ali Ataie please see here

And [beware the Day] when Allah will say, "O Jesus, Son of Mary, did you say to the people, 'Take me and my mother as deities besides Allah ?'" He will say, "Exalted are You! It was not for me to say that to which I have no right. If I had said it, You would have known it. You know what is within myself, and I do not know what is within Yourself. Indeed, it is You who is Knower of the unseen. [Quran Translation of the Meaning 5:116]

Nabeel's Kitchen getting HOTTER!

:) Ali Ataie!!!

After putting in what Christians considered a dismal performance in a debate with Dr Shabir Ally, could it get much worse for Nabeel Queshi's Christian apologetics debating career?

Well, when the biggest hitter in Muslim apologetics towards Christians puts Nabeel on his to do list it begins to get even hotter in Nabeel's kitchen.

If Nabeel hasn't already hung up his debating suit, this could be a debate career ender for Nabeel Qureshi.

Guy calls Ali Ataie 'anti Christ'

Perhaps, the next time a Christian extremist calls you an anti-Christ you could respond in the way Ali Ataie responded to a guy (not sure if Christian) who accused Ali Ataie of being an anti-Christ

Enjoying my Peete's coffee when a man, noticing the Bible and Qur'an on my table, began shouting at me and calling me "anti-Christ." I quickly responded, "But the Elder says that whoever does NOT believe that Jesus is the Christ is an anti-Christ (1 John 2:22). And I believe Jesus is the Christ." He did NOT expect a response from me... his wife had to LITERALLY pull him out of the building. Almost had to flex my blackbelt.... well... after 15 years of not training.

Ali Ataie's Answer when asked about ISIS

This is from the Muslim apologist Ali Ataie's FB:

Gave an Eid khutbah in Orlando about prophetic character as described in the Qur'an and Sunnah. A reporter from Fox was there, who apparently was not interested in talking to me. I left. I found out later that all questions asked from the community members were about ISIS. On a slightly tangential note, I was asked about ISIS today by a perfect stranger. "ISIS?" I inquired puzzled. "Yes," he said. I responded, "Isis is the mother or Horus and wife of Osiris... right?"

OK, so clearly he was playing with the questioner.

For those who are interested in knowing what Muslims say about ISIS, look at the material by Sheikh Dr Yasir Qadhi:

Jews and Christians Fasting

Here Ali Ataie offers some scholarship and shows fasting is part of the Judeo-Christian tradition. Sadly there are some /Christians still unaware of this.

Zaytuna College faculty member, Ali Ataie reflects on fasting in the Judeo-Christian Tradition in relation to its practice in Islam.

Ustadh Ali Altaie is the founder and president of the Muslim Interfaith Council. He was born in Tehran, Iran and came to the United States in 1979. Altaie earned his bachelor's degree in accounting from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. He is currently a visiting assistant instructor of religious studies at Cal Poly, as well as an instructor of apologetics at the World Alliance for Humanity in Fremont, California. Jesus taught people to do the Will of God (according to Mark 3:35) in order to become his brothers, mothers or sisters. A Muslim means one who submits to the Will of God. Do you want to become a brother of Jesus? If yes, become a Muslim. Now is the time.
