Christian Polemicists on Love, Quran 3:32, John 3:16 and Romans 5:8

It’s commonplace for Christians to exaggerate the Christian view of love. For the most part this is probably just due to an ignorance on their part and a Westernised liberal mindset rather than the product of some sort of wilful effort to misinform. This is why you get Westernised “Christian” evangelical organisations making such comments on social media:

Thank God for christianity. For a God that loves us even while we were yet sinners, For a God that loves us enough to come down to earth, for a God that just doesn't just create but wants relationship with his Children. It sometimes takes learning about a religion such as Islam to appreciate what we have in Christ. Allah HATES DISBELIEVERS #Surah 3:32 # John3:16#Romans 5:8 [DCCI Ministries via FB]

RC Sproul says: I think there are few things more dangerous than preachers out there preaching that God loves everyone unconditionally

Do Christians really believe God loves everyone unconditionally? No.

Here are three points to think about in this regard.

1. The Bible teaches that God HATES sinners/wrongdoers (sinners would include unbelievers, right?)

4 For you are not a God who is pleased with wickedness; with you, evil people are not welcome.
5 The arrogant cannot stand in your presence. You hate all who do wrong
Psalm 5:4-6

Pslam 11:5 is in a similar vein. Additionally, Christians believe God is angry with the wicked (I assume this includes unbelievers)

11 God judgeth the righteous, and God is angry with the wicked every day.
[Psalm 7:11]

2. Common sense. Christians believe those who do not accept Jesus will be in eternal damnation (Hell) for eternity. Can you seriously tell me you believe God and Jesus love these people?

3. Paul of Tarsus curses anybody who does not preach his version of Jesus. Paul seems to hate these people. If you believe Paul in Galatians is inspired by God then how can you believe God curses those who he loves? Here’s Paul of Tarsus in his own words Galatians 1:

8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you,let them be under God’s curse! 9 As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let them be under God’s curse!

Love of God in Christian and Muslim views

God, according to Muslim and Christian beliefs, has a beneficient, providential and benevolent love for everyone regardless of belief/disbelief. The rain falls on the just as well as the unjust. Both the wicked and the righteous have oxygen to breath and both groups receive wealth, health etc..

Likewise, both groups believe God loves the world so much so that He gives a salvific message and thus humans have the potential to be saved.

The love God has for the redeemed (Love of complacency) is not extended to the unbelievers according to Christian tradition. Likewise, love of complacency (or love conditional love) is not extended to disbelievers according to the Islamic tradition either.

God abhors the wicked according to the Bible. In Christianity God sends the sinner to Hell, not the sin. Clearly, for the Christian preacher, it would be contradictory to the Bible to say God loves unbelievers the same way he loves the “saved” – Christians will believe God abhors those who he sends to Hell. Christians believe TCVO Jesus will send Muslims, Sikhs, Atheists and Unitarian Christians to Hell. To say TCVO Jesus loves all these “unbelieving” groups would be difficult to reconcile with the aforementioned.

Christian groups who are more into simplistic slogans like the one we are responding to are being a hindrance to a deeper and more healthy understanding of religious traditions.

Quran 3:32, Romans 1:18 and sound reasoning

The Christian group cite this Verse in their social media post (above) yet they have not applied thought to the context, The Verse is talking about those who reject God’s message and do not obey God. Obviously these people ultimately reject God’s love, Quran 3:31-32:

Say, [O Muhammad], "If you should love Allah, then follow me, [so] Allah will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful."

Say, "Obey Allah and the Messenger." But if they turn away - then indeed, Allah does not like the disbelievers.

Christians believe the same thing with respect to their tradition. Those who reject the message of God, effectively reject God and are ultimately cut off from the love of God. This has been outlined in the Bible verses we have presented previously. To re-emphasise this we can additionally cite Romans 1:18 which is essentially teaching the same thing as Quran 3:32 with respect to the Christian tradition

The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness [Romans 1:18]

Again, even if you did not have access to the Bible, the fair-minded Christian would conclude the same thing as Quran 3:32 with respect to Christianity by thinking about the doctrine of hell. Why else do Christians believe disbelievers go to hell if it is not for the rejection of God and ultimately the rejection of God’s love?

Christians who peddle simplistic and shallow polemics dishonour their Church traditions.

RC Sproul in his criticism of Christians who preach unconditional love explains the motivation behind their thinking: “We want to so much win people to Christ that we’ll do everything we can to hide from them the wrath of God”

Mark Driscoll says the Bible says, on multiple occasions, that God hates those who are sinners. He says, all the ways the Bible speaks about the wrath of God are greater than the number of times the Bible speaks of the love of God.

Driscoll’s candid admission explains why folks at small Westernised evangelical outfits preach the way they do. It’s because their churches are afraid of speaking about the wrath of God for the fear of losing congregants, potential new members and donations. They are essentially being told what they want to hear. Driscoll sums this attitude up by mentioning the Old Testament:

The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means; and my people love to have it so: and what will ye do in the end thereof? Jeremiah 5:31

Theologian John McArthur says “preaching that God loves you unconditionally is the wrong message. The sinner needs to be terrified about his condition”.

Jesus and the Sword

Tooting’s St Nicholas Church’s Elizabeth Schofield has taken to telling Muslims that Jesus will come for them with a sword if they don’t worship him (a man!). How can you truly believes Jesus loves everyone when you believe he will come back with a sword for those who do not want to worship Jesus ( man!) and then ultimately put them in Hell for eternity?

In addition, CJ Davis and St Nicholas Church in Tooting, on paper, accept the Thirty Nine articles derived from Thomas Cranmer’s Forty Two Articles which not only talk about hell but also teach that God chose the believers (saved ones) before time (predestination). For academic honesty, this does not necessarily mean Calvinism’s Unconditional Election but it does seem to leave the door open for that theology to be a valid theological view within the CoE paradigm. How do St Nicholas Church folks who endorse or are part of DCCI Ministries parse this part of their teaching as well as the belief that Jesus will come back in condemnatory judgement for the unbelievers - do they think these views are consistent with the idea expressed in the social media post that Jesus loves unbelievers?

John 3:16 and Romans 5:8 and Islam’s equivalent

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.[John 3:16]

But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. [Romans 5:8]

These verses are not about universal salvation, they simply express the idea that God offered mankind a way for salvation. Christians do not believe everyone will have eternal life, Christians (with a focus o Arminianism) believe God has offered mankind a route to salvation and it is ultimately down to people to decide to accept this offer of salvation (i.e. via the killing of Jesus for their sins).

Islam has the same general teaching in that God (Allah) offers a route to salvation to mankind. He sent messengers to every nation so people can know God personally, worship Him and obey Him in a relation of love with Allah. In Islam as well as Judaism, God is perfectly forgiving so does not need to have somebody or Himself killed in order to forgive us. The final message and route for salvation God (Allah) gives to humankind is Islam – those who accept the message to submit their will to God will be those who are saved. Interestingly, this message of submitting to God’s will seems to be presented in a purported quote of Jesus in Mark 3:35 too

35 Whoever does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother.”

Once we scrape away the emotional harrumphs and fluff certain, unhelpful, Christians add to proceedings we see very much that in Islam, God loves the world enough to offer mankind a way to Him. Likewise, the same is taught with respect to the Christian tradition in John 3:16.

Summary
Let’s call for obscurantist Christians to be more fair-minded and stop clouding matters with unhelpful emotional accretions (fluff).

Now you know all this, you (the truth-seeker) can start to look deeply into both religions and decide which one carries more truth.

I think it’s counterproductive for anybody who believes in Heaven and Hell to state God loves everyone (unconditionally) and condemn teachings of other faiths which teach the view that is compatible with common reasoning, that God does not love unbelievers (why else would He put them in hell for eternity?).

Do you really think TCVO Jesus loved those he ordered to be killed in 1 Samuel 15:3?

Come on DCCI and Tooting’s St Nicholas Church folks, you’re looking contradictory. My advice to DCCI Ministries, move beyond shallow and inconsistent polemics – you do not honour Paul of Tarsus, your churches or even sound reason. You simply serve to get people’s backs up and ultimately become an obstacle to sound dialogue between Christians and Muslims

For Christians who say Allah is a Deceiver- a Message from James White

54. And they [the disbelievers] schemed and Allah schemed; and Allah is the best of schemers.

This text is often cited as evidence of some kind of dishonesty on Allah’s part, but the honest reader recognizes that just as God sent a lying spirit into the mouths of false prophets as a means by which He brought just punishment on those who rebelled against Him (1 Kings 22:33), and just as the New Testament warns that those who refuse to love the truth will be caused to love a lie (2 Thessalonians 2:10-11), this text could well be saying that when people scheme against Allah and His ways, they will find Allah is significantly better at that activity than they are. Muslim Explaining Exodus 3:14 I AM WHO I AM

From  Blogging Theology

In Exodus/Shemot 3:14 prophet Moses asked God what is His name, then God said to him  Ehyeh ašer ehyeh  אֶהְיֶה אֲשֶׁר אֶהְיֶה.  The common English translation of this enigmatic phrase is: “I am what I am“, often contracted in English as “I AM”   and  often thought as one of God’s name. I  probably think that the most literal translation of its meaning phrase from hebrew is “I Shall Be What I Shall Be“.
However one may wonder what this God’s Name really is?  I would  like draw the reader attention to the works of the great  Rabbi Saadia Gaon ben Yosef (882-942)  or  Saʻīd bin Yūsuf al-Fayyūmi  also known by the acronym “Rasag” who is the most famous Gaonic sage, a great Talmudic scholar,  philosopher and hebrew grammarian.
In his Arabic translation of the Torah in Exodus 3 :14 he translated Ehyeh ašer ehyeh  as  “Al Azāly alladzī lā yazūlu” الأزلي الذي لا يزول  which means
The eternal which  never perishes
ehyer
Interesting to note also that great medieval commentator of the Torah from  rabbi Samuel ben Meir aka “Rashbam”, the  grandson of rabbi Shlomo Yitzhaki, “Rashi.” also wrote on Exodus 3:14:
ויאמר אלוקים אל משה, if you do not know My name, I will tell you that I am the Eternal. This means that I can fulfill any promise I make. Now that I have told you that My name is “the Eternal,” כה תאמר, thus you shall say to the Children of Israel, “the One Who is the Eternal has sent me to you.”
i-am-that-i-am
It  is evident that Rashag and Rashbam rendering of the verse do away  with any possibility that God  is one being in Three Persons. The entirety of the existence of  God is that He shall always be eternal. The trinitarian truth claims that Jesus was begotten was then invalidated.  God is always ONE unseparated exclusive PERSON the ONE who never ceases to exist therefore who absolutely do not die.  If there is existence that ‘eternity’ belongs to, then there is ONE who exists and will aways exist, never begotten . If there is ONE who never perishes , then there is only ONE who does. No other “personages” can be introduced.
Thus He Shall Be What He Shall Be: “The Eternal”.

Analysis: Common Evangelical Christian Argument Saying Allah is not the God of the Bible

This is a response I wrote via a comment to an evangelical Christian argument that goes along the lines of:

Islam teaches Allah is not the father of anybody while according to the Bible Jesus calls God the Father therefore Allah is not God.

It's a very simplistic argument that has an obvious fallacy to it (see my first point) and under further scrutiny we see there's an interesting side question of the authenticity of the term "my Father" attributed to Jesus in the Gospel texts (second point).

Here's the response with amendments:

Hi, IIRC you argued the God that sent Jesus cannot be the God Muslims worship as Jesus called God the Father while Islam teaches God (Allah) is not the father of anyone.

Firstly, Jews used the word abba for God in a metaphorical sense denoting closeness and an intimate relationship with God.

[Thus the prohibition of calling Allah "my Father" does not mean Allah is not God. Think about it, there are dietary laws that are taught in the Hebrew Bible but done way with in the New Testament, would the Evangelical now seriously argue the God of the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament) is not the same God that Paul preached about? The argument is not only flawed but it is inconsistently applied]

Secondly,
there’s no hard evidence Jesus called God by the term “father”. If you have a look at Mark 3:35 you will see Jesus is said to have used the word God while Mattthew changes the same statement by replacing the word ‘God’ with the word ‘Father’ in Matt 12:50.

However, there are other references in Mark where "Father" is used for God. Thus, the Christian will believe both Father and God can be used interchangeably. Therefore, banning the use of "Father" would not denote an ontological change in God.

Let me know what you think of this. Also, try and visit your local mosque to study scripture together (with Muslims) and have friendship and dialogue.

Peace

Where Did Allah Say I am God Worship Me in the Quran?

See Quran 20:14, here's a translation of the meanings of this Verse:

"Verily! I am Allah! La ilaha illa Ana (none has the right to be worshipped but I), so worship Me, and perform As-Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat) for My Remembrance.

Responding to Christians who boast they call God 'Father'. Ali Ataie.

Christian missionaries often claim they have some special relationship with God because the New Testament uses the word 'Father' yet as Ali Atiae points out it's a figurative term and the Muslims have a term which reflects the figurative meaning of 'the Father' i.e. the One who takes care of you in stages. This term is Rabb. This term is used in the Quran for Allah.  For more from Ali Ataie please see here

World's Biggest Dinosaur Created by Allah

The bones of a dinosaur thought to be the biggest creature ever have been found in Argentina.

The fossilised bones are of a new species of titanosaur which weighed 77 tonnes – as heavy as 14 African elephants. It is 40m (130ft) long and 20m (65ft) tall and was a herbivore from the Late Cretaceous period. [source]

The greatness of our Creator, who created us and this huge dinosaur, is indeed something to reflect upon.

Another 'Answering Islam' Argument Destroyed

Here's a comment from Blogging Theology by Tactful83 which takes apart a hypocritical Christian argument against Islam by insincere Christians:
The sad part of all this is the fact that Sam Shamoun and David Wood will not allow meaningful dialogue or disagreement on this subject. Sam deleted my post on his Facebook page and my comment doesn’t even make it past the moderator at David’s website. I’m sure others have the exact same problem. Well, for what it’s worth, here is my original comment that Sam and David don’t want their readers to see:
You have to be careful when putting forth this type of argument because there are dozens of Bible verses that convey something strikingly similar. Christians shouldn’t be using double standards or uneven scales when engaging Muslims. We can’t apply a different standard to the Qur’an that we are unwilling to apply to the Bible. We must strive toward a high standard of truthfulness and honesty, and avoid using unfair and distorted arguments. There are far too many strong and compelling arguments against Islam to be using weak and ineffective ones. The God of the Bible does confuse, confound, deceive and harden the hearts of the wicked.
Here are just a few passages from the Bible that are strikingly similar to Surah 3:54 and 8:30 of the Qur’an:
Therefore God sends them a strong delusion, so that they may believe what is false, (2 Thessalonians 2:11 ESV)
Now therefore behold, the Lord has put a lying spirit in the mouth of all these your prophets; the Lord has declared disaster for you.” (1 Kings 22:23 ESV)
And if the prophet is deceived and speaks a word, I, the Lord, have deceived that prophet, and I will stretch out my hand against him and will destroy him from the midst of my people Israel. (Ezekiel 14:9 ESV)
Come, let us go down and there confuse their language, so that they may not understand one another’s speech.” (Genesis 11:7 ESV)
Therefore its name was called Babel, because there the Lord confused the language of all the earth. And from there the Lord dispersed them over the face of all the earth. (Genesis 11:9 ESV)
O Lord, you have deceived me, and I was deceived; you are stronger than I, and you have prevailed. I have become a laughingstock all the day; everyone mocks me. (Jeremiah 20:7 ESV)
Lord, confuse the wicked, confound their words, for I see violence and strife in the city. (Psalm 55:9 NIV)
But the Lord hardened the heart of Pharaoh, and he did not listen to them, as the Lord had spoken to Moses. (Exodus 9:12 ESV)
So then he has mercy on whomever he wills, and he hardens whomever he wills. (Romans 9:18 ESV).
My view on this argument is reinforced by a passage from Dr. James White’s book, What Every Christian Needs to Know About the Qur’an:
“Qur’an 3:54 And they [the disbelievers] schemed, and Allah schemed; and Allah is the best of schemers.
This text is often cited as evidence of some kind of dishonesty on Allah’s part, but the honest reader recognizes that just as God sent a lying spirit into the mouths of false prophets as a means by which He brought just punishment on those who rebelled against Him (1 Kings 22:23), and just as the New Testament warns those who refuse to love the truth will be caused to love a lie (2 Thessalonians 2:10-11), this text could well be saying that when people scheme against Allah and His ways, they will find Allah significantly better at that activity than they are.” (Page 114).

Best of Deceivers or Best of Planners? [Surah 8:30 and Surah 3:54]

Some Christian missionaries are misrepresenting s:8:30 and s3:54 in order to claim ‘ the Quran tells you Allah is the best of deceivers’. However, looking at the two Quranic Verses I realised, the context, the commentary literature and the translations (by Muslims and non-Muslims) disagree with these Christian missionaries.

Context of Surah 8:30

The context of s8:30 is that of the polytheists of Mecca planning to kill, imprison or expel Prophet Muhammad (p). Allah of course prevents their plans by putting in place His own plans. So Christian missionaries should have known from the context it is speaking of planning/plotting and not deceiving!

(And when those who disbelieve) i.e. Abu Jahl and his host (plot against thee (O Muhammad)) in Dar al-Nadwah (to wound you fatally) to imprison you as suggested by 'Amr Ibn Hisham, (or to kill thee) all together as suggested by Abu Jahl Ibn Hisham (or to drive thee forth) and expel you as suggested by Abu'l-Buhturi Ibn Hisham; (they plot) they intend to destroy and kill you, O Muhammad, (but Allah (also) plotteth) He wants to destroy and kill them on the Day of Badr; (and Allah is the best of plotters) He is the strongest of plotters [S8:30 – Tafsir (commentary) from Tanwir al Miqbas min (from) Ibn Abbas]

And, remember, O Muhammad (s), when the disbelievers — who had gathered to discuss your affair at the council assembly — were plotting against you, to confine you, to chain you up and imprison you, or slay you — all of them [acting as] assassins of one man — or to expel you, from Mecca, and they were plotting, against you, and God was plotting, against them, by devising a way [out] for you, when He revealed to you what they had devised and commanded you to leave [Mecca]; and God is the best of those who plot, the most knowledgeable among them about it. [S8:30 - Tafsir Jalalayn (commentary of the two Jalals)]

Context of s3:54

The context of 3:54 is that of the disbelievers plotting to kill Jesus (p). Allah prevents their plans by putting in place a plan of His own – Allah saved Jesus (p) from the harmful plans of the disbelievers. So again, from the context you can see it’s referring to planning/plotting/ and not deceiving!

Hilali Khan translation which comes with brief commentary:

And they (disbelievers) plotted (to kill Iesa (Jesus) ), and Allah planned too. And Allah is the Best of the planners.

Note: I did not cite the tafsirs of Jalalayn and Tanwir al Miqbas min Ibn Abbas concerning this Verse, as although they agree that the context is that of disbelievers planning to kill Jesus they also give a theory (or allude to a theory) as to how Jesus was saved etc. For the purpose of this post this is irrelevant – and in fact we are unsure as to exact nature of the events in God’s saving of Jesus (p). See appendix for these commentaries.

Translations do not agree with the Christian missionaries

No translator uses the word deceiving deceive, deceiver or deceivers. In fact they all indicate Allah is the best of planners. I have highlighted 4 English translations from Muslims and 4 from non-Muslims.

For s3:54, you can see all the translators (including the non-Muslims of Sale, Palmer, Arberry and Rodwell) refer to planning in some way. Nobody is mentioning ‘deceiving’. Palmer uses the word crafty which in turn is a reference to planning (definition clever and scheming)

And they (the disbelievers) schemed, and Allah schemed (against them): and Allah is the best of schemers.

And (the unbelievers) plotted and planned, and God too planned, and the best of planners is God.

And they (disbelievers) plotted [to kill 'Iesa (Jesus)], and Allah planned too. And Allah is the Best of the planners.

And they planned and Allah (also) planned, and Allah is the best of planners.

And they devised, and God devised, and God is the best of devisers.

But they (the Jews) were crafty, and God was crafty, for God is the best of crafty ones!

And the Jews plotted, and God plotted: But of those who plot is God the best.

And [the Jews] devised a stratagem [against him]; but God devised a stratagem [against them]; and God is the best deviser of stratagems.
http://www.quranbrowser.com/cgi/bin/get.cgi?version=pickthall+yusufali+khan+shakir+sherali+khalifa+arberry+palmer+rodwell+sale&layout=auto&searchstring=001

As for s8:30, no translator uses the word ‘deceiver’ or ‘deceives’. They all refer to planning either by directly using the word or by using a word which conveys such a meaning.

And when those who disbelieve plot against thee (O Muhammad) to wound thee fatally, or to kill thee or to drive thee forth; they plot, but Allah (also) plotteth; and Allah is the best of plotters.

Remember how the Unbelievers plotted against thee, to keep thee in bonds, or slay thee, or get thee out (of thy home). They plot and plan, and God too plans; but the best of planners is God.

And (remember) when the disbelievers plotted against you (O Muhammad SAW) to imprison you, or to kill you, or to get you out (from your home, i.e. Makkah); they were plotting and Allah too was planning, and Allah is the Best of the planners.

And when those who disbelieved devised plans against you that they might confine you or slay you or drive you away; and they devised plans and Allah too had arranged a plan; and Allah is the best of planners.

And when the unbelievers were devising against thee, to confine thee, or slay thee, or to expel thee, and were devising, and God was devising; and God is the best of devisers.

And when those who misbelieve were crafty with thee to detain thee a prisoner, or kill thee, or drive thee forth; they were crafty, but God was crafty too, for God is best of crafty ones!

And call to mind when the unbelievers plotted against thee, to detain thee prisoner, or to kill thee, or to banish thee: They plotted - but God plotted: and of plotters is God the best!

And [call to mind] when the unbelievers plotted against thee, that they might either detain thee [in bonds], or put thee to death, or expel thee [the city]; and they plotted [against thee]: But God laid a plot [against them]; and God is the best layer of plots.
http://www.quranbrowser.com/cgi/bin/get.cgi?version=pickthall+yusufali+khan+shakir+sherali+khalifa+arberry+palmer+rodwell+sale&layout=auto&searchstring=001

Conclusion

Christian missionaries are being disingenuous by misrepresenting translations and also missing the context. The context indicates to us, as well as the tafsar literature and the translators that the two Verses (s8:30 and s3:54) are telling us Allah is the Best of Planners.

Appendix

Tafsir Jalalayn on s3:54:

God says: And they, the disbelievers among the Children of Israel, schemed, against Jesus, by assigning someone to assassinate him; and God schemed, by casting the likeness of Jesus onto the person who intended to kill him, and so they killed him, while Jesus was raised up into heaven; and God is the best of schemers, most knowledgeable of him [Jesus].

Tafsir Tanwir al Miqbas min Ibn Abbas on s3:54:

(And they schemed) they, i.e. the Jews, planned to kill Jesus, (and Allah schemed (against them)) Allah wished to kill their man Tatianos: (and Allah is the best of schemers) the strongest of those who have a will; it is also said this means: the best of Makers.

Allah's Creation: The 'Diamond Planet'

Astronomers have spotted an exotic planet that seems to be made of diamond racing around a tiny star in our galactic backyard.

The new planet is far denser than any other known so far and consists largely of carbon. Because it is so dense, scientists calculate the carbon must be crystalline, so a large part of this strange world will effectively be diamond.

"The evolutionary history and amazing density of the planet all suggest it is comprised of carbon -- i.e. a massive diamond orbiting a neutron star every two hours in an orbit so tight it would fit inside our own Sun," said Matthew Bailes of Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne.

Lying 4,000 light years away, or around an eighth of the way toward the center of the Milky Way from the Earth, the planet is probably the remnant of a once-massive star that has lost its outer layers to the so-called pulsar star it orbits.

The Name 'Allah' Used By Christians

The name Allah is not confined to Islam alone; it is also the name by which Arabic-speaking Christians of the oriental churches call upon God. [1]

Some food for thought for those nutty American Christian fundies who traverse the cyber and real world spewing out the most vile of insults directed at Allah. Do they not know they are committing blasphemy – even in the eyes of their Arab (and learned) Christian brethren???
