Another Video - more help with Design Studio Grouping and Resizing

I had quite a few emails and questions after I posted the video about grouping and resizing in Design Studio so I thought it might be a good idea to make a second video to answer them.  If you missed the last video, here is a LINK to the post.  If you want to use the grouping and resizing functions, you need to be sure that you have the current version of Design Studio installed.  The last update was in May of 2010.

When you click on the help menu at the top of your Design Studio screen, chose "about" at the bottom of the drop down menu.  You should have Version 1.0.40422.0.

If you have an earlier version of the software you need to go to cricut.com to download the update.  If you have recently purchased Design Studio, the CD in the box will not have the most updated version.  You should simply download the latest version and use the number printed on the CD envelope in the box to activate your software.  From the home page, click on "products" at the top left and then click on "download updates" under Design Studio.  If you are not signed in to the site you will need to sign in before proceeding to the download page.  Here is the direct link Design Studio Updates.

To update the program follow the directions provided.  You should uninstall the current version first to avoid problems with the installation.  When you do this, you will find that you will need to relabel your cartridges into the "my cartridges" and "favorite cartridge" categories under the Preferences menu.  If you have added keywords to any of the carrtidges, these will also need to be redone.  Some people install the new version without uninstalling the older version and have no problems.

If your program is up to date but you are missing some of the cartridges, you need to download and run the second update for the DesignStudio FontPacks.  Be sure to SAVE the download and then run it to make sure that the cartridges are added.  If your program is open when you do this you will need to close and reopen the program to see all of the cartridges.

The screen says that the most recent update is from November, 2010, however, if you click and download you will find that the version is V101207 which includes the cartridges announced in December so you will be up to date.

(I cover all of this in the video but I thought it might be helpful to type it out and show the screen shots here.)

This is the test cut of the frame that I designed in this video.  I'll be using this in a project that you'll see next week.

Please let me know if you have any questions or need help with the grouping.  It makes Design Studio much more useful and lots of fun too!

Video Show and Tell on Design Studio Update

I made two videos to show you some of the changes to the Design Studio software in the latest update.  Here is a LINK to my post a couple of days ago describing changes I have figured out so far. I must warn you that I have found that the program is behaving inconsistently - it seems that I don't always get the same results from doing the same actions.  I will update my posts and videos as I become more familiar with these new features.

These are "exploration" videos - so think of them as show and tell for what I have found as of today  I had a few unexpected things happen but I left the videos as they were so you could see that sometimes you truly do have to "play" with the software for a while to find out all of the tricks to getting it to do what you want to do.  Unfortunately, while we seem to be getting closer to a grouping function, this update seems to provide just a basic "select all."  At least it is a step in the right direction...

I ran out of time to demonstrate everything so I may add some more videos in another day or two.  I have been using a new computer and had a few technical difficulties but I didn't want to delay posting these since so many of you had been asking for videos.

Please leave comments to let me know if you are having similar results in your experimentation with the updates.  I'll post again as I find out more information about the additions to the program .  I have heard that there will be a Gypsy update tomorrow so it looks like I'll be doing more "techie time" before the weekend.  I may just go make a card or two for a break!

Click the You Tube logo in the lower right corner to "Watch on You Tube" to see the video in High Definition (720p) for the clearest image at full screen size.

Here is the second part:

Program Update for Design Studio - What has changed?

You may be wondering what strawberry shortcake has to do with Design Studio updates. Well, nothing really - I just wanted a more interesting picture for the top of this post since it is a bit on the dry side!  I thought I would fill you in on what I have learned from playing around with the newest version of Design Studio.  Here is a LINK to the post with the information on how to update your software.  You should follow the directions on the Cricut.com site for installation.  If your files are in the default location (documents - cricut - projects) you should not have any reason to lose them when updating the software but it is always a good idea to back up your files regularly.

After you do the program update for Design Studio, you will have version 1.0.40422.0 (you can check your version by clicking "About" at the bottom of the help menu).

One of the first changes you will notice is that the cursor does not keep you inside the bounds of the virtual mat.  It is possible to add images to your project where you won't be able to see them.  If you have clicked a key and no item appears on the mat check your Shape Properties box.  Without clicking on the mat (and deselecting the item), enter 0 in the "X" box and the item should come back to the left side of the virtual mat.

This is an advantage when you want to enter a long word.  If the word is so long that you can't "find" the lower right handle by changing to the 12 x 24 mat, you can use the arrow keys on the keyboard to move the word while it is selected until it moves far enough to bring the handle into view.

Another improvement is that if you start with the cursor near the right side of the mat and realize that your word will be too long to fit you can grab the free move handle (top left), pull the word to the far left of the mat and continue to type your word.  The word is no longer broken when the program "thinks" you are out of room.

If you are accustomed to using Design Studio as it has been for the past few years, you will need to remember to keep track of the cursor location.  The best way to do this is to simply double click near the left side of the mat to bring the cursor into view before you add new items.

A more exciting addition to the program is the ability to select a group of objects all at the same time and apply the various operations to them as a group.  This is a step closer to the true grouping function that we have been waiting for.  In the example above, I have previewed the two items and then resized and moved them as a group.

You need to click (left or right click) somewhere on the mat away from your items and then keep the click down as you drag the mouse to the opposite corner.  A box will appear (just a thin line).  It doesn't matter where you start.  You can even be out in the green area beyond the mat.  When you release the click all of the items will have little dots in the "handle" spots except for the last one added to the mat which will have the normal handles in blue bubbles.

You can then apply the various "handle" functions to this group all at once.  However, the items do not stay in their relative positions as a unit and you can't copy and paste so it really only helps when you have a bunch of things that you want to move all at the same time on the mat.

This is the grouping after resizing.  You can proportionately resize everything at once but you will have to realign your design.  The operations affect each individual item.  While you have all of the items selected, you can check "weld" just once and it will be applied to every item in the group.  The weld will remain checked even when you click on the mat to deselect the group.

If any item you are adding to the group was flipped, it will flip back to the original orientation as soon as you release the the click.  This is a problem if you wanted to make a shaped card and then move it to a different area of the mat.  However, you can move the items and then select just the item you want to flip and check flip again.

There is still an "burping" issue which can be solved, as before, by copying, deleting and pasting back an element of the design, working from the inside out.

You cannot nudge individual items within the group but if you add an element to the group while another element is selected they will be in the same selection box and the item added when one item in the group is selected is nudgeable - in other words you can select a group of groups

The last item added to the group will get the handles even if you deselect and then choose another item before drawing the box again. You can make a different item show the handles if you copy it, delete it and paste it back again so it is last item in the group.  Otherwise the handles jump to the last item added no matter which item is selected by you.

If you add an item to the selected group, it will take on whatever properties have been applied to the group - the same way it happens with the current selection boxes with handles.  The lower "F" was added to the grouping which had been made wider and flatter.  It is in a "sub-group" with the heart.  You can see the image  of the "F"as it appears on the cartridge at the top right.

If you hit "delete" while the entire group is selected it will all be deleted (if you do this accidentally, go to the Edit menu and choose "undo delete shapes" or hit "control z" on your keyboard to get the shapes back).

I have realized after typing all of this out, that it may be simpler to "show" you these things on a video (but it is too late to make one now).  I will try to do a short demonstration video in the next day or so.  I am hopeful that with this change we are on our way to getting full functionality in the Design Studio program.

There are a few more things I will be able to show you as we work together to learn what the update has to offer.  Please let me know what you have noticed as changes in the software.

Flowers in the Garden

I wanted to share a few photos of our irises.  They are one of my favorite flowers and ours have been very pretty this year.

This large clump of purple irises just started blooming last week.  These came from my husband's grandparent's former home and have done well in the front of our house where it is very sunny.

The flowers are huge and they have a sort of grape scent.

I decided to get a little "artsy" with my photo editing with this very close up view.

On the other side of the front walk we have these blue and white irises which bloom earlier than the deep purple variety.

In this straight down view you can see the wonderful effect of the contrasting colors.

The white irises are in the side bed which was intended to be an all white garden but a few "volunteer" flowers in other colors have appeared and we don't want to move them!  These are the Japanese irises without a beard.

These are (obviously) not iris - I just thought the light coming through the foliage was so pretty.  The hostas are also in the "white" garden.  I have to give credit where it is due and say that my husband is the gardener and I admire and photograph the flowers but don't do much digging!

If you'd like to see more iris photos, here is a LINK to a post from last year where I shared some photos of irises growing in the Presby Memorial Iris Gardens in Montclair, New Jersey.  If you live in Northern New Jersey this garden is well worth a visit.

I had a busy weekend so I haven't had a lot of time to experiment with the update to Design Studio.  There is some progress with a new ability to select a group of items and move them together but unfortunately, you can't copy and paste the entire group and if you resize the group the items do not stay in the same relative positions so you need to move them individually to complete the resized design.

You also need to pay very close attention to the location of your cursor.  It will no longer automatically return to the left side when you reach the edge of the mat.  You can double click on the mat to place the cursor or use your X and Y values to move a shape into the mat area.  It is easy to "lose" objects in the areas that can't be seen on your screen.

I will spend some time tomorrow putting together some examples to show you the changes.  It looks like a small step in the direction of true "grouping" but right now it is basically a "select all" feature with the ability to apply the same changes to each item selected at the same time (rotate, skew, etc.).  Unfortunately, flipped items do not stay flipped when you use the new feature so you have to reflip after resizing and realigning.
