Olympic Soda Rings

We had a whirlwind trip to Pennsylvania to visit my Dad this weekend.  It was great to see him back in his own apartment.  We went to the store to get a few things for Dad and I saw this Olympic display of various types of Coke products.  Of course, I had to snap a few photos!

The Olympics start on Friday and it will be a good diversion in our house.  Our son, daughter-in-law and Jelly the cat leave for San Francisco on Wednesday so it will be very quiet here!

The Olympic rings are made from various Coke products that come in cases that are predominantly red, green, black, yellow and blue (the blue is a bit pale but it works to convey the idea).  I wonder if lots of stores around the countries have a display like this?  Is it something the local store manager decided to create or did someone in the company offices figure out how to build the display and send directions for the stores to put it together?  There are a lot of cases in the display - how long will they keep them set up before selling them?

It's fun to find "crafty" projects in unexpected places.  This is pixel art with very large pixels!  Have you seen anything like this display at your local stores?  I did a quick search and found some other variations in photos online.

Here are a couple of family photos from this weekend...

We have one more big family get together planned for Tuesday and then I'll be getting back to a more regular schedule and sharing some new projects.

Olympic Rings revisited

When the August 2008 update to the Design Studio software was released it was so exciting to finally be able to weld inside the frames on the cartridges, overlap silhouetted shapes and have them weld correctly and to be able to create "grouped" or "adjustable" designs by keeping all design elements in the same selection box.  The only major functional update to the software since the 08-08 update was the addition of "hide selected contour" in December 2008 (which was equally exciting in the new options it gives for customizing designs).

I made the Olympic rings as an example of the new possibilities offered by the software at that time.  The Beijing Summer Olympics were just ending.  With the Winter Olympics opening today I thought I'd share the information on making the rings again.  I have moved the file to 4shared for downloading.

Here is a LINK to my original post with the full explanation and the file.  I used the George cartridge for the silhouetted circle - if you don't have George you can substitute another silhouetted circle from a cartridge you own.

Thank you for your patience this week - I know that I am behind on answering emails and comments.  I will be mailing the Blogoversary gifts tomorrow.  I have spent nearly all my time this week helping our neighbors who lost their home to a fire last Sunday.  If you would like to send cards to the family I know they would be greatly appreciated.  Here is a LINK to the post with the details for sending cards (scroll to the end of the post).  Thank you for your support.
