View-Master Nostalgia Travel Card

Do you remember using a "View-Master" as a child?  I was fascinated with the 3D images you could see on those odd round slides.  Lately I have seen View-Master images and even actual discs popping up everywhere.

We used half of a View-Master slide at the top of the "Heart and Soul" project in one of the Tim Holtz classes.  (This class was a lot of fun and we learned to do the "faux metal" effects - more about that another day...).

When I was at the Tim Holtz classes and exploring the Absolutely Everything store during the lunch break, I found this sheet of paper from the "Note to Self" collection by Lori Whitlock for Echo Park.

I loved the look of this paper and "needed" to buy it.  When I was waiting to pay, I noticed that the label in the center says "Payne Bros." so I will definitely be using this for a project about our two sons - the Payne Brothers!

I thought that it would be pretty easy to make my own View-Master type image - so I opened up the Silhouette Studio software and gave it a try.  (I like to make my own files - after I was finished with my card and writing up this post, I thought to look in the Silhouette store and there are two files available there - one is by Lori Whitlock and the other is a Silhouette file).

I will share the details about how I designed my file in another post.  It isn't difficult, but there is some math involved (!)  Here are all of the bits and pieces for my card.

I cut the two phrases using the font "Reklame Script Regular" Demo version (available at dafont.com HERE).  I welded most of the letters together.  Sometimes a phrase is easier to read if you don't weld all of the letters.  I used the LetraTac adhesive again - it is so easy to use for these small pieces.

I recently found this "Travel" paper pad from Martha Stewart Crafts and I thought it would be perfect for my corny sentiment!

I chose this paper with foil accents for the card front and cut a layer at 4 x 5 1/4 inches.  I chose the lower right corner of the sheet of paper so I could have the word "adventure" showing above and below the View-Master slide.

I inked the edges lightly and adhered the paper to a blue A2 card base (5 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches folded in half).

For the inside of the card, I chose this paper.  I cut a piece from the lower left corner, a little bit over toward the center so I could include the Turtle Crossing, palm tree and signpost.

This allows a nice space for the sentiment and a clear spot at the bottom of the card for a message and signature.  I also inked the edges lightly just to take away the white that shows on the cut edge.

I added the View-Master disc with some foam circles for a little dimension on the front of the card.

The raised effect makes it look like you could lift the disc off the card and put it in a viewer!

I think that my little film windows are a bit more rectangular than the actual View-Master version.  I didn't check the exact dimensions of a disc when I designed the file.  I may tweek the file a bit to resize the windows and I may also do a print and cut version to add the numbers and a title.

It was fun to figure out how to make this simple file.  You could also do this in the Cricut software (Design Studio, Gypsy or Craftroom) fairly easily.  The only tricky thing would be to make the little notches on the outer edge.  I would just make a couple of small squares, turn them on the diagonal so they would notch the circle and make sure that you didn't weld the pieces together.

Did you have a View-Master?  Did you know that there are at least 25 different models, thousands of titles and one and a half billion copies of discs!  View-Master is part of the National Toy Hall of Fame in the United States (source - Wikipedia article HERE).

Have a nostalgic day!

Another Collection (in progress)

In the midst of all the projects I am trying to finish up for the gallery display, I have also been hit with the Spring Cleaning bug.  This includes more than my physical environment and filing paperwork.  Unfortunately, my computer photo files have fallen into a sorry state.

I take many photos for a blog post and edit them to show the project or the process as clearly as possible.  I used to be good about immediately deleting the "also ran" images but somewhere along the way I got out of the habit.  In order to catch up and clear the backlog, whenever I have a few minutes to spare and the laptop is up and running, I tackle a week or a month and delete the excess photos (thousands so far - I can hear my computer breathing more easily!).

One of the reasons I have so many photos is that I always seem to notice things that I think are interesting and want to save for a reference.  I also like to make my own digital scrapbooking elements and when I see something that would make a good page background or accent I "need" to take a few photos to preserve the idea.

When I was walking back from town last week, I noticed this light pole labeled with the letter "A."  I have walked past this spot many times but the letter caught my eye that day and I had a camera with me.  For a long time I have had the idea in the back of my mind to put together an alphabet of letters that I have photographed.

So, now the hunt is on - the only question is whether I need to find the letters in order.  I am sure I have a few other letter photos in the thousands I am working through as I clean up my files.  How long do you think it will take me to get the full alphabet?

One of the other things I noticed that day was this soggy ice rink.  In our area, it is fairly common for people to put up a small backyard ice rink.  I think this year it probably wasn't worth the effort!

Another problem I have (and I know I share it with lots of other crafters) is dealing with the scraps from my projects.  I hate to waste anything so the offcuts tend to accumulate until I get around to trimming them down to workable pieces - or punching images from the edges.

It's a little embarrassing to admit that the leftover piece that I finally punched a day or two ago was from a card I made and posted last October (you can click the photo of the card to go to the original post if you missed it).  Another reminder to myself - deal with the leftovers as you finish each project and then they won't pile up and cause craftroom chaos!

That's all for today - I'll leave you with this lovely rose that I printed and cut out with my Silhouette SD.  I am so excited to be able to take any of the thousands of digital images I have in my digital scrapbooking files and easily print them and cut them out so perfectly.  This is an Echo Park image from the "For The Record" collection.  I think I'll be able to post the card tomorrow - unless I get distracted taking photos of letters or punching shapes from scraps!

Have a wonderful Wednesday!  We are expecting the temperature to be in the 80's. Don't forget to check out the new deals at Blitsy today - there may still be a few of the Tim Holtz items from last week available.  If you haven't joined yet (it's free), please use my LINK to sign up.  Then you can get your own link and refer your friends to earn credits.

Speaking of Tim Holtz...the Creative Chemistry 101 class has been great so far.  You can still sign up - you'd just have to catch up watching the videos.  When you take the class you have life long access and the interaction during the original two week session is a lot of fun.  Here is the LINK to the information page.

A Special Breast Cancer Awareness Kit

I made this card to highlight a special pink kit that is available now from Creative Charms.  For the rest of the month Creative Charms is featuring a kit that they are calling Chris’ Kit in memory of Chris Hertel.  Chris worked very closely with Creative Charms. She was a Design Team member and also designed the catalog, the logos and all the new packaging.

This past July she lost her battle with breast cancer. She left behind a loving and dedicated husband and two fabulous children.  Her family was her joy and her inspiration. From now until October 31st, the net proceeds from sales of this kit will go to the Susan G. Komen Foundation to help find a cure for this disease so that families will no longer have to lose their wives, mothers and daughters (Chris' wish).

Here is the list of items included in Chris’ Kit:

·         Pink 3D Sparkly Butterfly Garden Brads – 12 Pieces
·         Pink Sunflowers – 4 Pieces
·         Violet Vintage Jewels – 12 Pieces
·         Pink Vintage Jewels – 12 Pieces
·         White with Pink Sparkled Flowers – 6 Pieces
·         Pink Sparkled Butterflies – 2 Pieces
·         Pink Sequin and Felt Flowers – 3 Pieces
·         Pink Sheer Flowers – 6 Pieces

There are 57 Pieces and the price is $9.99 (regular price would be $23.21).  You can find the kit HERE on the Creative Charms website.

I started with this piece of patterned paper from the Echo Park "Country Drive" collection.  The paper was cut at 4 x 5 1/4 inches to layer on an A2 card.  I wrapped some thin ribbon around the card layer three times.

I taped the ends of the ribbon on the back of the card layer.

Then I applied adhesive all around the edges and adhered the layer to a green card base.

I took a short piece of ribbon and slid it under the three strands.

Then I pulled the ribbons together and tied a knot, making sure not to pull too tightly.

I slid the short ribbon up a little toward the top of the card, trimmed the ends and used a glue dot to secure the ribbon to the card front.

I chose a large pink Sparkled Butterfly (two are included in this kit) and added a couple of foam dots to the back to fit over the ribbon knot.

To give even more sparkle to the butterfly, I added a pink Vintage Jewel (also in this kit) over the body.

The sentiment was stamped on a white rectangle of cardstock and then mounted on a scalloped rectangle I cut from pink glitter cardstock with a Nestabilities die.  I added more foam dots to raise the sentiment to balance with the butterfly.

The sentiment stamp is from "friendship sentiments" by My Sentiments Exactly and it is stamped with dark pink ink.

Thanks for stopping by today and please consider purchasing one of these kits - every little bit we do to support research to find a cure counts.

A quick reminder about the challenge...

Today is the last day to participate in the Challenge I gave you in THIS POST.  You can upload any project you have made using something from Creative Charms and have a chance to win this great set of all of the colors of Vintage Jewels.   All of the details are in the original post.

If you don't have a blog - you can still play along.  Just put my blog address (or any other url) in the blank and fill in your name and email.  Then you can click to go to the next page.

When you get to the second page, you will see options to add the direct image URL (from a photo storage site like Flickr or Photobucket) or to upload directly from your computer.
