Step by Step Directions for Incire (cut, fold and tuck) Design in Silhouette Studio

Happy Thursday!  It is supposed to be very warm here today and I hope to get some time outside to enjoy the weather.  Here are the step by step directions for creating the incire design for this card in the Silhouette Studio software.  These directions may assume some general knowledge and familiarity with the software.  I tried to make all of the steps clear but please feel free to ask any questions in a comment or by sending me an email.

I will do a video for those of you who prefer videos but it probably won't be posted until next week.  If you have the Designer version of the Silhouette studio software there are a few things that could be done differently as shortcuts but these steps should work just fine.

When the card is cut it is easiest to lift all of the loops and fold them and then go back around the design and tuck the loops under the solid sections.  Cardstock that is a different color on each side will give the most dramatic effect but these designs also look pretty in a solid color.

If you get really stuck, I do have the file to share but give it a try first.  The Silhouette software is very easy to work with and I think it is more fun to "conquer" a design challenge than to simply cut out what someone else has designed.

Incire with Plantin Schoolbook

The Incire (fold and tuck) designs that I have been making are quite easy to make with the Silhouette Studio software.  I have had lots of requests for files that can be used with the Cricut machines.  I created a file with Plantin Schoolbook but it is fiddly and requires a bit of hand cutting to complete the lines.

I remembered that there was an open shape on the Plantin Schoolbook cartridge that is used for the end caps

When you see the design on the mat it looks like the machine will cut perfect half circles.  I had to reshape the outer half circle with the "handles" to make a matching interior shape (if you just make it smaller the width of the cut will not be even).

The half circle line is actually two lines - it appears continuous but when you click on the line you can see that only half turns red (this is how you would choose a line to use the "hide contour" feature).

I only had time to do one test cut and I found that the machine left a gap in the half circles that I needed to hand cut in order to complete the cut lines.  I am not sure if this was only an issue with my machine.  I am curious to hear if any of you can get it to cut a full line.  I seem to remember using this cut before and not having this problem  (but it has been a long time...).

It is just a small gap, but I did have trouble making the cuts perfect.  The loops will be tucked under the next shape so some of the wavering lines will be hidden.  With practice you could probably do a better job.

I only did one row because you can't copy and paste a group of items in Cricut Design Studio.  I turned the mat around and cut the row again on the opposite side.

The color you add behind the page gives a different look - here I used a dark blue.

Bright pink gives a totally different look.

These lines created loops that turned out to be a bit on the thin side for the size of the page.  The width is a matter of personal preference - you just need to work out what looks good for your project.

I'll add the link to download the file if you want to play around with this idea.  I am planning to do a little more experimentation to try to make Cricut files but I much prefer the Silhouette software because of the additional features that make a tedious process quick and easy.

You will need to do lots of "math problems" to work out the spacing if you try to design more of these projects for the Cricut.  I will take a look to see if I can find another cartridge with lines that will work.  This is very time consuming since the shapes are often hidden on a feature level or shift.  There may be a line that will cut cleanly that can be replicated more easily.

I would definitely recommend considering an additional machine with a better software program if you want to start making lots of these files.  The Cameo can sometimes be found on sale for between $200 and $250 and it is a great machine.  The Silhouette Studio software basic version is free and it works very well to create unique designs like these.

Incire (fold and tuck) Full Page

I have been trying all sorts of variations with the incire patterns and I decided to try a full page background for a layout.  The paper I chose is yellow on one side and has an interesting dotted pattern on the other side.

In this close up shot you can see how the design looked after cutting.  I alternated the directions of the rows of cuts to add more interest.

Once the design is cut, the first step is to lift each half loop and fold it over.

Then you simply tuck each loop under the oval next to it, all the way along the row.

Here are the first two rows after folding and tucking.

You could choose to cut only a few rows and leave part of the background plain.

I liked the idea of filling the page to add a lot of texture.

Just keep folding and tucking, one row at a time.  I think it is easier to fold all of the loops and then tuck them all at that same time.

If you want to layer the finished page over another color you can get a very complicated look that is actually quite easy to make.  The end loops should be fastened down with a bit of adhesive (I haven't done that yet).

Now I just have to look around for some photos to use on this page (maybe I should have started with the photos and then chosen the paper!).

What do you think?  Do you like the look or is it too busy?  I don't think any of these photos show the texture very well - I'll take some more shots when I finish the page...

Sunday Sneek Peak

It's been a busy weekend and I decided to take a bit of a break for some family time.  I have lots of new projects designed and finally started to do some test cuts this afternoon.

Here is another incire (fold and tuck) design that I created with the Silhouette Studio software.  I'll be posting a tutorial for the method I use to make these designs this week.  You do not need to have the Designer Edition of the software to make these designs - they are easy to make with the basic free version.

It is frustrating to try to make this type of design for the Cricut - the software doesn't allow you to draw your own lines and I haven't been able to spend the time to try to find shapes that will allow me to hide lines to make these cuts.  So, for now, I'll only be designing these to cut with my Silhouette machines.

Lots of people have asked if the baby quilt fabric that I posted was an indication of any "news" (it's funny how many of you thought there was a hidden message!).  No new babies are expected in our immediate family, but my niece is expecting her third child next month.  We are just the "grandparents" (and temporary caretakers) of Jelly the cat.
