Fabulous Finds Doily (or frame!)

So many frames lately - so I went back in my files and found this doily that I did a while ago but had not posted . (I actually haven't posted everything I've done - some are too simple, some are too personal and wouldn't be useful to others, and some are just waiting for a little something to make them "post-worthy").

I got the Fabulous Finds cartridge for a great sale price shortly after I got my Expression but I hadn't really used it - wasn't even sure what all those things could be used for! I looked at some of the interesting shapes and liked the hearts (I think I started this around Valentine's Day) so I started flipping and rotating them and this is what I came up with.

The offcut has an interesting shape - I think this could be used for a layout - it's in my "save" pile. I think it looks like some sort of flower...



I set this file up on two mats and the second mat has the cut to turn it into (surprise!) a frame!

It is a bit fiddly getting all the small pieces out but just be patient - if you have trouble with the cutting it may be time to replace your blade. I hope you like this one and can find a place to use it. Take a careful look at this cartridge, there are a lot of intriguing possibilities beyond the hinges, tags and fasteners.

Very Complex Doily - All George and Tricky!

So this is a rather long story. I decided to try a complex design to see if there was an "upper limit" to the capabilities of the CDS software. I used George on the silhouette setting for the hearts and flowers. The process of designing was slow but simple - copied and pasted the shapes over and over changing the angles to get the welds. The hardest part was getting the size of the small circles around the solid center circle to come out evenly.



After I got the design done and previewed the welding it all looked good - here is a screen shot of the top of the design (one of the frustrating things in CDS is that you can't see everything at once when you do a large design unless you make it fit to screen but then it is too small to see details).

So, I inserted the paper and pushed "cut" on the screen and waited, and waited, and waited - this design takes over 15 minutes to cut! The results were not what I had envisioned:



The silhouetted hearts flowers and even circles were cutting off center and as they got further from the center of the mat were more and more off center and resulted in cut off hearts and flowers - not what I wanted. I wondered if I had a bad cartridge so I appealed to the Cricut message board members for help. Sandy (LehighGal on the Cricut message board) tried cutting the design on her machine and it worked for her so I knew the issue was somewhere with my machine and/or cartridge, not the .cut file.

I got lots of suggestions regarding the mats, blade position, etc. At this point I was out of town and not able to experiment with more cuts since I didn't have my machine. When I got home I gave it another try - thinking that maybe something was wrong with my George cartridge.

First I tested out simple rows of silhouette designs. I found that the further from the center I got, the more off center my cuts were - here is an example:



But, ever the optimist, I tried again - being extra careful with loading the mat and making sure the paper was well stuck down to the mat. This time the doily cut out closer to the way it should but was still not acceptable - here is a photo of the complete doily



The overall effect is better but the top right corner still suffered some overcutting resulting in broken flowers and many of the hearts had a very thin side and a thicker side.



I still wasn't happy...More questions to the message board and some people had tried my .cut file and also had the same bad result I did. One comment intrigued me - Sandi (CelticWoman on Cricut message board) explained some of the issues she had encountered with CDS and the actual machine and said that she found a difference in the cutting depending on how her blade housing was loaded - the "sweet spot" seemed to be having the arrow a bit to the left of the line where black blade holder hinges together (her post on cricut message board included this photo)



So I tried this advice and also took out a brand new mat that was perfectly flat (I had noticed that the edge of the mat I was using did have a bit of a curl to it). I did a test run on the line of flowers and they cut evenly all the way down the line (the red ones were the first test - the light ones are after adjusting blade and on new mat).



I held my breath, loaded a third sheet and waited another 15 + minutes for the design to cut. Success at last! It was not totally perfect, but this time no flowers were cut off and all of the hearts were even. Here is a close up of the upper right corner - the area that was always the worst...



It's not perfect but I decided I could live with this since nothing cut through. I may try again with a bit more tweaking of the blade housing position.

I will share this file with the warning that you may have to go through several tries and do some adjustments to get it to work but, with luck and some fiddling, you may be able to cut your own doily! There is one place in the upper right where I missed a weld between a flower and the inner circles but I left it that way as a deliberate imperfection (as in quilting). You can easily change this if you want to.

There is a second mat on the .cut file and this is to cut a circle inside the design creating a frame. To do this do not unload the mat when the first design is done cutting - just change to the second mat on the screen and cut the second circle (at least that will go fast!).

Ice Cream Cone mini doily

I designed this small doily after struggling with a very large one that I attempted to do to see if there was an upper limit on the amount of welds CDS would do (more about that later). This is only 8 cones from SYI and to make it work I had to add the circle in the center which comes from PS. It is only 5 1/2 inches in diameter.
