Butterfly Valentine Card

Valentine cards are so much fun to make.  There are lots of types, from the cute kid valentines exchanged in school to the super elaborate multi-layered lace and bead creations dripping with vintage elegance.  I eventually get tired of red and pink but I do love making valentines.

If you have been reading my blog for a while, you know that I have a slight (well more than slight) "addiction" to the Memory Box dies.  Every time new dies are released I am like a kid in a candy shop.  I just bought this butterfly heart die and I couldn't wait to try it out.

My first Idea was to simply cut the heart shaped group of butterflies into the front of a pale pink shimmer card and add embellishments.  I wanted to keep the die centered so I taped it to the cardstock (total fail! - I forgot that I actually bought the Sizzix magnetic plate so I wouldn't have to do this...!).

The tape left marks on my card front so I moved on to Plan B.

Fortunately, I already own the die that coordinates in shape to the butterfly heart - it is called the "Cupid Heart" and it matches a few other heart dies from Memory Box.

I cut a heart shape in the center of a 5 1/2 x 4 1/4 piece of red cardstock.

This overlay fits perfectly around the butterflies.  I trimmed the pink cardstock to be a bit smaller than the red card top.

I thought the plain red cardstock was a little too simple for a Valentine so I looked through my Anna Griffin embossing folders.  I was sure that there would be one that would work nicely for this card and the "Reflected Damask" was just what I was looking for.

The symmetrical pattern lined up perfectly with the heart cut-out.  These folders cover the full front of an A2 card.  I usually make my card toppers a little smaller than the card to leave a thin border but I decided to show off the entire embossed design and have the topper completely cover the white card front.

I used 1/8 inch ScorTape to adhere the overlay to the pink butterfly layer.  By putting the adhesive on the pink piece I could be sure that the top layer would be easy to place over the butterflies.

The butterflies are pretty but the three dimensional effect was rather subtle with just a white card base behind the image.

I tried putting a piece of gold metallic cardstock behind the butterflies and if really made them pop!  The butterflies need to have their wings lifted after cutting and you might not want to mail this card unless you put it in a box - otherwise the wings might get crushed down.

Here are the pieces of the card front - the base is white cardstock from Papertrey Ink.  I really like using this for card because it is very thick.  The back of the folded card can take the weight of this multi-layered front.

After I added the full front to the card all I needed was a sentiment.

I decided to pull out an older Cricut cartridge called Sentimentals and look for a quick cut for this card.  I found the "For You" on page 64 of the handbook.  It has a shadow layer so it worked for my card.  (I could have created the sentiment with my Silhouette but sometimes a quick Cricut cut is just faster and easier).

I reversed the colors for the sentiment, using gold for the top layer and the pink shimmer for the  shadow.

If you don't have a clear layout ruler, you might want to pick one up.  They can be found in art supply stores or craft stores and usually cost less than $10, depending on the length.  I use mine all of the time for paper scrapbook pages and a shorter ruler is great for keeping things lined up on a card.

I adhered the sentiment directly to the card instead of using a foam dot to raise it as I often do.  I didn't want the words to take away from the fluffy butterfly wings.  The words are slightly off center because I wanted to line up the slant of the "F" with the angle of the heart.  This also gives me a bit of extra room if I decide to add a ribbon to the side of the card.

It is very hard to capture the effect of the shimmer and metallic cardstock in a photo.  This darker photo gives you a better idea of what it looks like in person.

I haven't added a sentiment inside but an appropriate one (though slightly corny) might be "my heart flutters for you!"

Thanks for all of the good wishes for my sister - she is out of the hospital and recuperating at home. We that our new kitty might end up being called "Dorabella" - we just have to try it out for a few more days.  We like it because she is adorable and Dorabella sounds like it could be Italian for adorable - or maybe it's Italian for "doorbell?"

Just a little enabling...

The beginning of summer is a very busy time.  I have been off my usual schedule for posting lately - if you are an email subscriber, there may sometimes be two posts in one email.  I am also trying to get into a better sleeping schedule - after I read that not getting enough sleep can make you gain weight!  So, rather than stay up late to do a post for the next day, I have sometimes shifted to writing on the same day or evening.

There are a lot of sales going on now - here are a few that may be of interest...

Anna Griffin is having a Super Scrapbook Sale in her online store - here is a LINK to the store.  There is free US shipping and a free gift for orders over $50.  The sale lasts until Monday but some items are already sold out so if you love Anna Griffin's style, check it out!  The heart shaped acrylic albums that I gave away in my last blogoversary celebration (in the photo above) are $2.50 (regular price $15).

If you like Anna Griffin's style, you are probably also a fan of Webster's Pages.   If you don't spend all of your money at Anna's sale, you can buy this huge group of products in the Webster's Pages Warehouse sale starting Monday (while supplies last).  This photo from the Webster's Pages blog shows a great group of products that retail for a total of $129 - for just $25 - pretty irresistible!  Here is a LINK to the Webster's Pages website for the sale on Monday.  I am not sure what the shipping will be for this sale - you can find out on Monday.

It looks like we will have some nice weather for the weekend - I hope to go to the library book sale that was postponed from last weekend and then get our deck furniture set up - I think we may finally be done with the thick green pollen from the pine trees.

My days have been a little crazy and I have piles of almost finished projects that I need to photograph and then I can share what I have been up to.  I also have a few more of the projects form the Tim Holtz weekend to show you.

I hope you have a great weekend - we will be seeing an old friend from graduate school on Saturday and helping with a few more moving chores Sunday afternoon.

Art Philosophy - Great for Cardmakers!

I hope you enjoyed the Disney/Pixar blog hop yesterday.  If you didn't have a chance to check out all of the projects you can still make the rounds today.  Just click HERE to go to the starting post for Day One.  If you did participate yesterday and can't wait for more, you are in luck - this is a two day hop!  Click HERE to start Day Two and visit another talented group of crafty bloggers.

Happy Sunday!  Today I want to share a card that I made with the Art Philosophy cartridge bundle that my friend Melanie of Courtney Lane Designs sent to me to review.  You can purchase this cartridge only through a Close To My Heart  consultant.  If you are interested in the Cricut Art Philosophy bundle click HERE to go to the proper page on Melanie's CTMH website (tell her I said "Hi"!).

The Art Philosophy cartridge is a cardmaker's dream!  I like to work with the Design Studio or the Gypsy to create shaped cards and other designs but I realize that many people prefer to have the shapes ready made on a cartridge.  This cartridge has not one but two keypad levels full of lovely shaped cards.

You could spend days and days just making up all of the various card combinations.  When you add in the possibilities of using the stamps and chipboard shapes that come with this bundle there is no limit to your creative potential.

There are three or four possible top layers for most of the cards - some of the layers can be combined with others for even more design options.

I cut  a scalloped oval card base and the corresponding layer with three tree cutouts.  I did "tweak" these a bit on the Gypsy to get exactly the size I wanted.   I also checked "weld" to eliminate the tick mark showing where to fold the card base.  I think these marking cuts look messy and I always eliminate them when I cut a card.  The green piece of cardstock was cut with a trimmer to back the tree openings.

I used some foam squares to lift the lined tree cut from the card front.

The card base is Martha Stewart red cardstock, the layer with the tree cut outs is DCWV glittered cardstock and the green layer behind the trees is embossed pearl cardstock from American Crafts.  This is a nice start but the card needs some more sparkle.

I added some small green gradient gem stickers from Creative Charms in each scallop - the card is definitely looking more festive!

Melanie is the queen of large ribbon bows so I attempted one at the top of the card.  The chocolate brown wide satin ribbon is from Anna Griffin.

I decided to put the sentiment inside and chose some of the stamps from the bundle.  I also used one of the tree cut outs from the front of the card.  I set up the sentiment on a smaller scalloped oval that I cut from the cartridge.

Then I placed a small rectangular acrylic block on top of the stamps and picked them up all at once, inked the stamps with brown ink and stamped the interior scalloped shape for the card.

I added some small red gem stickers to accent the words and the tree - they fit the "o"s in "Love, Hope and Joy" perfectly!

The oval fits neatly inside the shaped card.  The shimmer of the card and the sparkle of the tiny gems is very pretty in person (but a bit tricky to capture in a photo!).

Here is a side view so you can see the effect of the layers.

This photo shows the finished card and a sneak peek at one of the cards I'll be posting for Creative Charms on Tuesday - be sure to check the Creative Charms Blog  next week to get all of the details!

Melanie has posted photos of the entire cartridge handbook on her blog - click HERE to go directly to that post.  You will be amazed at all that this cartridge has to offer.

You can visit Melanie's Close to My Heart website by clicking HERE.  To go directly to the page for the Cricut Art Philosophy bundle click HERE.  You will find many more sample projects and tutorials on Melanie's blog, Courtney Lane Designs, and you can contact Melanie directly with any questions at melliemel77@gmail.com (just tell her I sent you!).

I hope you are having  a great weekend - we are trying to catch up on some house projects and sorting through the things that accumulated over the summer!

The winner from my last Creative Charms post is Donna

Please send me an email at capadiadesigns@gmail.com with your mailing information.  I'll be sending you one of the Christmas Multi-Dimensional Chipboard Sticker sets.

This week I made some cards in pastel colors.  I think I have had a bit too much "Christmas in July" and I just wanted to make some soft and pretty things!  This is a 5 x 7 card.  The front panel is actually something that I found at a rummage sale.  The color blocks are printed on the white card.  It was meant to be used to print an invitation or announcement.  I trimmed a bit from the edges so my lavender card base would show.  You could easily duplicate this look by using some of your scraps.

The sentiment is from Hero Arts.  I didn't have the right shade of lavender ink so I stamped it once on scrap paper and then stamped directly on the card without re-inking the stamp.  This "second generation" stamp was much closer to the color of the card and the lavender color block on the front panel.

In order to place the butterfly brads from the 3D Sparkly Garden Brads, I pierced the card front and inserted the brads before adhering the color blocked topper to the card base.

The medium size glue dots work perfectly to adhere the floral gems to the card.

I used large glue dots to secure the Flared Flowers they are lightweight but large so the craft glue dots work best.  The sparkly centers of these flowers are so pretty.

The second card is very simple and highlights the Vintage Poppy.  This is an A2 card.  The glittered cardstock is from the 8 x 8 DCWV Nana's Nursery Boy Stack and is cut at 4 x 5 1/4 inches.

The wide satin ribbon is from Anna Griffin and it is tied around the entire card front.  You could slip a gift card under the ribbon on the inside of the card.

The sentiment is stamped on ivory cardstock cut in a scalloped oval with a Nestabilities Petite Scalloped Oval die.  I used foam squares to raise it from the surface of the card.

A couple of Gradient Gem Stickers add a finishing touch to the sentiment.

I took out the pearl brad in the center of the poppy and replaced it with a  Vintage Jewel Brad.

There is not a new Deal or Kit of the month for August - there will be some great special offers through the month.

I haven't quite made it through all of the messages, emails and comments - but I hope to finish up today  If you are waiting for an answer on something and haven't heard from me, please don't hesitate to send a reminder note.  It is very easy for some things to get missed, particularly after such a long trip and with all of the construction activity around here!  The floors are on the agenda for today.
