Marian's ATCs

Marian says KAYA!

I started out as a stamper making cards before I moved on to scrapbooking. My ATCs incorporate simple stamping in the design. As you can see most of my designs are very simple which is how I like my cards and LOs. I will be using these ATCs as tags for my gifts this Christmas.

Materials: Various paper and cardstock from my stash of scraps; stamps - Stampin' Up, Hero Arts and Hampton Arts, Penny Black; Ink - Ranger Archival Ink, Tsukineko Brilliance; Embossing powder; Mists - Radiant Rain and Glimmer Mist; Twinkling Waters paint; stickers and bling from my stash.

Techniques: stamping, painting, misting, heat embossing, layering

Kaya 31 - Get Ready For Christmas

I have always been a last minute shopper. I always say I'll do the shopping and gift wrapping early but I never get to do it. By the time December comes I still have many unchecked names on my gift list. Besides that, I like to wrap the packages and tag them with a handmade card. Sometimes on Christmas Eve I'm still rushing to get my gifts under the tree. This challenge will help me and you to get a head start on the things we need to do for Christmas.

The Challenge : I would like you to make Christmas Themed Artist Trading Cards (ATC) which can be used as a gift (they are after all mini works of art) or as a tag for a gift. An ATC is a card measuring 2 1/2 inches by 3 1/2 inches. You may use any material and/or technique to embellish the card. Your embellishments may extend over the ATC but the card base size should still be maintained. Please submit a minimum of 2 ATCs to be eligible in the drawing for a RAK. This is a great way to use up all your little scraps of paper and embellishments.

The RAK consists of several sheets of Christmas themed paper, Maya Road sheer journalling tags, Tim Holtz journalling tickets, several sheets of Prima Note journalling paper and 2 sets of mini Christmas stamps from Hampton Arts.

Kaya 31 will run from today November 14 - December 20, 2009. Please submit your entries on or before 11:59 pm on December 20. The challenge run has been changed just for this month to adjust for our busy schedules this holiday season.

As an incentive for you to make more ATC's Lee has an extra RAK (she will post her RAK soon) for the person who submits the most number of entries above 8 ATCs.

Owa's Girl

Marian says KAYA!

We always have dinner with my in-laws on Saturday evening. Sometimes we take turns hosting it at our homes and sometimes we eat out. Sophia always looks forward to these get-togethers as she gets to play with her cousins. She sat still on my lap in these photos as her playmates hadn't arrived yet.

Journalling: We've been bonding more now that I pick you up from school. I enjoy this role a lot. Lately I've noticed you choose to sit with me rather than with Mommy or Tita Kate. You've become Owa's girl.

Alcogel

Marian says KAYA!

It took me quite a while to decide what item I would scrap about. I finally chose the Alcogel as it's something I always have with me these days. It's not really something I cherish but I find very useful. When I pick up Sophia from school, the first thing we do is use the alcogel. I have become quite OC in using it specially coming from the bank, mall, hospital, paying for parking and after having contact with another person's hands. When we get home though, we wash our hands thoroughly with soap and water.

Journalling:
Soap & water has always been my choice fore clean hands. But with the spread of the AH1N1 virus, I have alcogel with me all the time. I have a small one in my bag and a full sized one in the car. So anytime I am out and handle money or touch doorknobs or need to mix a bottle of milk for Sophia, the alcogel keeps our hands clean and hopefully the viruses away.

Material used:
Patterned paper and CS SEI; Chipboard letters 2 different Basic Grey chipboard, Chatterbox, Scenic Route, Heidi Swapp, Scrapworks and MM; Tsukineko Brilliance Chocolate ink; Dymo labelmaker.

Techniques: Mostly just cut and paste. I inked the different chipboard letters to unify the look.

About Me:

I am so glad to have made friends through scrapbooking. It's so much more fun to scrap with friends around.

Perfect In Purple

Marian says KAYA!

Happy birthday Janis! Glad I was able to join this month's challenge.

These photos were taken last New Year's eve with my in-laws. It's a tradition that we meet for New Year's eve dinner and at the stroke of midnight we say a prayer for family unity and blessings for everyone throughout the new year. Ever since my mother-in-law passed away we take turns hosting the dinner.

Journalling: Without any plans, we discovered quite a few of us were in different shades of purple. What a great photo op.

This is a fun challenge. I originally wanted to make a more pleated and shirred LO with the fabric but couldn't find my stash of fabric scraps. I only found my felt so decided to make a really simple layout.

4/6 Queens

Marian says "KAYA"

I started out as a stamper before becoming a scrapbooker. So I decided I should do this challenge right away. These are photos of me with my "bilas". We are 6 Mrs. Kings and I am proud to say we are friends, travel buddies and sisters. I also have 6 other sisters-in-law all sisters of my husband. I am so lucky to be in this big family who I am sure love me.

Materials: Cardstock - Fabriano; flowers- Prima; Bling - Prima; Stickles; Chipboard - Fancy Pants; Radiant Rain; Glimmer Mist; Acrylic Gel Medium - Lefranc & Bougeous; Script stamp - Stampin Up; Crown stamp - Heidi Swapp; Frame stamp (stash); Slick Writer; American Craft Thickers; a big glass serving platter for the non-stamp item.

Technique: First I turned over the big serving platter and painted the gel medium over the bottom of the plate. I then lay the cardstock over the platter and patted it down so the gel medium would stick. I lifted it straight up, turned it over to dry (it dried clear so you can see the original color of the paper). The gel medium then acted as a mask. I sprayed various colors of Glimmer Mist and Radiant rain over the paper and wiped off the excess from the stamped image. I stamped the script onto the 2 big flowers.I also stamped 4 crowns over the Thickers Title. I stamped a frame stamp on a transparency and wrote the journalling there. The flourish chipboard was also sprayed with the Glimmer Mist and Radiant Rain.

About Me: I enjoy scrapping and stamping. I am always eager to learn new techniques.

Strike a Pose

Marian says KAYA!

I usually print my journalling on the computer. Recently though I've been using my handwriting. I also download a lot of free digi kits but haven't been doing any digi LOs. So this is an opportunity to use at least some digi elements.

For this challenge I used a photo of my favorite subject - my granddaughter. She has been quite cooperative with the camera as you can see.

Journalling: (on the lined beige paper) Look Sophia
Smile for Lola
Pose beside Mommy
Make arte
One more Sophia
Great shot
Perfect

You're The Inspiration

Marian says, KAYA!

I was actually looking for the lyrics of You're My Soul (Sole?) and My Heart's Inspiration for this challenge. Couldn't find it on-line so when I heard this song by Peter Cetera, I decide to go with it instead.

Journaling:
You should know
Everywhere I go
You're always on my mind
In my heart, in my soul
You're the meaning in my life
You're the inspiration
You bring feeling in my life
You're the inspiration

Materials:
All papers Basic Grey O Baby Girl collection. Stickers- Scenic Route, Making Memories. Distress Ink- Tim Holtz. DMC thread. Sepia Accents- Ranger

Techniques:
I inked the edges, cut and layered the papers.I sewed a backstitch frame around the photo mat. I adhered a flourish sticker and used part of the design as a template which I also backstitched. I diecut a heart and stamped on it then covered part of it with Sepia Accents.

About ME:
I have recently discovered the use of scrapbook kits. It's a great way to challenge yourself to scrap with limited materials.

My Bead Treasure

Marian says KAYA!

In a previous life I used to bead everyday. I was obsessed with beads and hoarded them much like I hoard scrapbook materials now. When I stopped making beads I gave away a lot of the unstrung beads and findings just leaving some that I really like and hope to put together one day.

Journaling:
A few years back I enjoyed making bead jewelry. It was the time when semi-precious stones and swarovski crystals were still not hot items for accessories. I went out of my way to learn the craft through magazines and taking lessons from the beading lady, Portia Leuterio.

I enjoyed making different types of jewelry stringing them with nylon string, twisting and weaving them with wire, knotting them with twine and even crocheting them with fine wire. I loved the look of different types of beads, the colors and designs and I loved making something beautiful with them. Whenever I would wear my creations, people would ask me where I got it and would always be surprised when I said I made it. Many of my relatives and freinds suggested I should sel and make it a business. I never got to do it as I felt it would not be fun and relaxing if it were a business. I did enjoy teaching some friends, relatives and my helpers the basics. I also made many pieces for gifts.

Sadly my eyes deteriorated and I found it difficult to bead so I decided to give up my hobby. I also stopped wearing my creations when bead jewelry became so common I found it passe.

These treasures have been gathering dust in the basement, completely ignored for several years. I hope to put them in shadow boxes for display soon.

Materials:
Basic Grey Perhaps line pattern papers, Maya Road Chipboard Swirls, Prima flowers, Doodlebug bling,Prima bling, Divisoria bling, Art Institute glitter, Scenic Route sticker letters, Chatterbox lace, a bead brooch, distress ink

Techniques:
Cut, ink, paste and layer patterned paper, paint and glittered the chipboard, computer printed the journaling and attached a bead brooch which is part of my stash of bead jewelry

About ME:
I'm a mother and grandmother but I'm enjoying my role as grandmother more.

Snowflake Ornaments

Marian says KAYA!

I actually bought these ornaments a week before Candy's challenge but didnt get to put in the pictures. With all the other holiday preparations still not done I decided not to stress myself and just do this for next year's decor. Thanks to Candy, I found the time to put in the pics to qualify for the challenge. Hope I can fill up all the frames before Christmas.

The most time consuming part of this challenge was selecting pictures and cropping them to fit into a 1.75 inch circle and then cutting them. I also changed the ribbon for hanging into silver cord and adding red and silver ribbon to the top of the ornament.

About ME:
I love to shop for new scrapbook stuff. I have more stuff than I think I can use iin my lifetime. My daughters know this will be part of their inheritance as I think most of my money goes to this craft. Haha. So to justify all this scrap shopping I need to scrap more.

One Moment In Time

Marian says, KAYA!

This is really a great challenge as I have been able to scrap really fast with a definite plan in mind. Sometimes it is better to be limited by certain parameters so we don't waste too much time deciding what technique to use. I have helped myself too by not obsessing over the perfect paper.

This will be one of the layouts in an ancestry album for my granddaughter.

Journaling:
This was your great grandmother Sally's First Holy Communion. In her time you had to be 12 years old before receiving this sacrament. This must have been taken in the late 1930's.

If your great grandmother were alive to see your First Holy Communion, she would probably take charge of having a stampita made to remember the occassion as she did with your lola and mommy. She would also arrange for a delicious breakfast at home for the family to enjoy.

Materials Used:
Prima patterned paper Tea & Silk Collection "Katsura", Ryoanji" and "Nijo"; All About Scrapbooking Bling; Tsukineko inks and Melissa Frances tag.

Techniques Used:
Tearing, inking and then curling the edges, cutting.

About ME:

Remember

Marian says, Kaya!

This is a photo of my mom and dad in the 80's. My dad passed away in 1988 and my mom in 2000. I plan to make an ancestors/relatives album for Sophia and will probably use the same picture for the album. My dad was a professor in UP. I am quite sure I got my love for the arts from him. If we had a party, it was he who prettied up the house. He could make beautiful flower/plant arrangements from things found in the garden. He did Ikebana too. At Christmas time he would make our Belen from pieces of wood, rocks, and assorted fabrics.Sometimes he would make "stained glass" Belen from plywood and colored cellophane. He could draw and paint. My mom worked part time for her side of the family. Among her many duties, the part she loved the most was buying whatever the family needed or whatever her sisters needed. So she did the groceries, marketing, fabrics for clothing, furniture, upholstery etc. It was an art in itself as she could bargain very well to get a good price for anything she bought. Once in fact she was able to make "tawad" in Macy's in America. (That's another story). I think I got the lover for shopping from her though I don't think I bargain as well as she does.

Journalling: You were hard working frugal parents. Because of this, we were able to enjoy an easy life. For this I am ...eternally grateful.Mommy & Daddy circa 1980's

Materials: Paper Dream Street Antique Chic, Marvy butterfly punch, WRMK butterfly rubon, Stampin Up Butterfly stamp, white Staz On, Bic Marks It Permanent markers, Prima crystals, MM bling, flowers AAS, Melissa Frances tag, Collage Press letter stickers, Uniball Signo white marker, EK chalk.

Techniques:Some cutting of the flower pattern to put part of the photo behind it. I stamped the butterfly on a transparency with white Staz On then colored with permanent markers. Rubbed some yellow chalk on the white journalling, white rub on and tag to age them a bit.

About ME:
I love arts and crafts especially scrapping, stamping, card making and taking photos. My favorite subjects are my daughters and granddaughter. I have been scrapping for more than 3 years but I believe there is still so much to learn. I like to try new techniques and get so excited when I see the finished product. Love Your Smile

Marian says, KAYA!

I was planning to scrap these pictures and the Kaya challenge requiring a bow was perfect to match the bow on Sophia's headband. Didn't spend too much time looking for the perfect papers and materials because of the early deadline. This is based on a Page Map.

Journaling:
