Some of our friends on the left resist our "frenemy" theory about Bill Clinton--partly because the things Clinton says don't undermine Barack Obama in their minds. For instance, when Clinton criticized potential swing voters for being "impatient" with Obama, the lefties agree. But we doubt that the swing voters--the ones Clinton is ostensibly trying to persuade--did.

We can't wait to hear them explain away this one: "Let me tell you something," Clinton said at a Florida appearance yesterday. "I may be the only person in America, but I am far more enthusiastic about President Obama this time than I was four years ago."

That statement is surely true. Clinton was anything but enthusiastic as he watched Obama deny the Democratic nomination to his wife. The frenemy theory further explains why Clinton would be "enthusiastic about President Obama" this time around--because he gets to take revenge by sabotaging his re-election, and if that fails, he gets credit for helping Obama's victory. A total win-win.

But that "I may be the only person in America . . ." is a qualifier that makes an ambiguous compliment into an unmistakably backhanded one. It's like saying: "I don't care what everyone else says about you, I think you're all right."
