Based on 2016 stats, Alaska has been named the most dangerous state in the country.
24/7 Wall Street released its annual report on the "Most Dangerous States in America" on Friday.
By examining the FBI's 2016 Uniform Crime Report, which was released this week, the report found that Alaska is the most dangerous state in America, and concluded that Anchorage is the state's most dangerous city.
The report states that in 2016, there were 804 violent crimes per 100,000 Alaskan citizens, 52 murders and 409 adults per 100,000 residents were imprisoned.
Louisiana, Tennessee, Nevada and New Mexico rounded out the top five.
Nationwide, of the 10 most violent states, nine are either in the South or the West, while New England states made up half of the country's 10 safest states.
Overall, the violent crime rate rose in 38 states from 2015 to 2016. In 2016, the national rate was 397 violent crimes per 100,000 citizens, shy of the national violent crime rate at its peak in 1991, which was 758 violent crimes for every 100,000.
This report is actually a few months old, but I only saw it last night when my daughter sent it to me.
For the record Alaska has been in the top ten most dangerous states for about as long as I can remember.
However being number one is still a little unsettling.
When you grow up here, you just know to follow certain rules.
In the wilderness you make lots of noise and hang your food from a tree when you camp.
In the city you avoid certain areas, keep your neck on a swivel, and keep a dog in your home.
I have had more than my fair share of violent interactions, but virtually all of those occurred when I was a kid and sought out dangerous situations.
As an adult most of my scrapes with the criminal element come from working with people suffering with mental illness or behavioral problems.
I still think this is a beautiful place to live and visit, but I would caution that if you do keep your eyes open. Wide open.
Morality is not determined by the church you attend nor the faith you embrace. It is determined by the quality of your character and the positive impact you have on those you meet along your journey

While we are all focused on the latest Donald Trump scandals, the military quietly prepares for war with North Korea.
Across the military, officers and troops are quietly preparing for a war they hope will not come.
At Fort Bragg in North Carolina last month, a mix of 48 Apache gunships and Chinook cargo helicopters took off in an exercise that practiced moving troops and equipment under live artillery fire to assault targets. Two days later, in the skies above Nevada, 119 soldiers from the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division parachuted out of C-17 military cargo planes under cover of darkness in an exercise that simulated a foreign invasion.
Next month, at Army posts across the United States, more than 1,000 reserve soldiers will practice how to set up so-called mobilization centers that move military forces overseas in a hurry. And beginning next month with the Winter Olympics in the South Korean town of Pyeongchang, the Pentagon plans to send more Special Operations troops to the Korean Peninsula, an initial step toward what some officials said ultimately could be the formation of a Korea-based task force similar to the types that are fighting in Iraq and Syria. Others said the plan was strictly related to counterterrorism efforts.
In the world of the American military, where contingency planning is a mantra drummed into the psyche of every officer, the moves are ostensibly part of standard Defense Department training and troop rotations. But the scope and timing of the exercises suggest a renewed focus on getting the country’s military prepared for what could be on the horizon with North Korea.
As I reported last month the Navy has deployed special radar hunting warplanes to South Korea, supposedly for military exercises, but that is probably just a thinly veiled excuse.
And of course the Trump Administration is trying to loosen those restrictions on the use of nukes.
All of this seems like it is headed for a disaster for which we are simply not prepared to deal.
No wonder I am drinking so much damn coffee.

Donald Trump is now identified as the top nuclear threat in the world.
Courtesy of Defense One:For the first time in 35 years of analysis, I must list the United States as the greatest nuclear threat in the world. https://t.co/lyhfXb2CfP
— Joe Cirincione (@Cirincione) December 28, 2017
The greatest nuclear danger does not come from a foreign threat or a terrorist group but from our own president. The Washington Post, reporting on how intelligence briefings are shaped so as not to upset President Trump, concludes that “the personal insecurities of the president have impaired the government’s response to a national security threat.” Many fear that the president’s mental condition is itself a national security threat. This is, like so much of the past year, unprecedented.
Concern over the president’s mental stability and his sole, unchecked authority to launch nuclear weapons caused the Senate Foreign Relations Committee this year to hold the first hearings on nuclear command and control in over 40 years. Chairman Bob Corker, R-Tenn., fearing that Trump was leading the nation “on the path to World War III,” convened the hearing. Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., voiced his deep fear at the session: “We are concerned that the president of the United States is so unstable, is so volatile, has a decision-making process that is so quixotic that he might order a nuclear weapons strike that is wildly out of step with U.S. national security interests.”
Once an order is given, no one could stop it. Mullen, when asked if a general could refuse Trump’s order, said, “Any senior military officer always approaches it from the standpoint of we’re not going to follow an illegal order. That said, the president is in a position to give a legal order to use those weapons. And the likelihood that given that order that it would be carried out I think would be pretty high.”
Most experts agree. Former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper worries that if Trump, “in a fit of pique” decides to launch a nuclear strike, “there’s actually very little to stop him. The whole system is built to ensure rapid response if necessary. So there’s very little in the way of controls over exercising a nuclear option, which is pretty damn scary.” Senators and House Members have introduced legislation to change the decision process and policy.
The fear of a mad, nuclear-armed president haunts those outside the United States as well. “While the global community may trust that no responsible head of state would ever order another nuclear attack, we have no guarantees that it will not happen,” Berit Reiss-Andersen, head of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, warned during the prize ceremony this month. “Despite international legal commitments, irresponsible leaders can come to power in any nuclear-armed state and become embroiled in serious military conflicts that veer out of control.”
Great job there deplorables, great job.
We are no longer the world's policeman.
We are the world's number one potential terrorist bomber.

United States one of only three nations to vote no on a UN resolution to condemn Nazism. Wait, what?
Courtesy of CBS News:
The United States says it was one of three countries to vote against a U.N. resolution condemning the glorification of Nazism over freedom of speech issues and concerns that Russia was using it to carry out political attacks against its neighbors.
The resolution entitled "Combating glorification of Nazism, Neo-Nazism and other practices that contribute to fueling contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance," was approved by the U.N.'s human rights committee on Friday with 131 in favor, 3 against with 48 abstentions.
Ukraine and Palau were the other no votes.
"We condemn without reservation all forms of religious and ethnic intolerance or hatred at home and around the world," said Deputy U.S. Representative to the Economic and Social Council Stefanie Amadeo, explaining the U.S. vote.
"However, due to this resolution's overly narrow scope and politicized nature, and because it calls for unacceptable limits on the fundamental freedom of expression, the United States cannot support it," Amadeo said.
Why didn't he just come out and say that Doanld Trump is cool with Nazis, and needs their support in the next election?
Well it's a good thing that Ukraine and Palau voted along with us or we might look like Nazi loving assholes.
Right?

Syria to sign Paris Climate agreement leaving only the United States out in the cold.
Courtesy of the New York Times:
Syria announced during United Nations climate talks on Tuesday that it would sign the Paris agreement on climate change. The move, which comes on the heels of Nicaragua signing the accord last month, will leave the United States as the only country that has rejected the global pact.
According to several people who were in a plenary session at the climate talks in Bonn, Germany, a Syrian delegate announced that the country was poised to send its ratification of the Paris agreement to the United Nations.
“This is the very last country that actually announced, so everyone has joined and the U.S. is now so isolated,” said Safa Al Jayoussi, executive director of IndyAct, an environmental organization based in Lebanon that works with Arab countries on climate change.
A White House spokeswoman, Kelly Love, pointed reporters to a statement the administration made when Nicaragua joined the pact, noting there had been no change in the United States’ position.
“As the president previously stated, the United States is withdrawing unless we can re-enter on terms the are more favorable for our country,” the statement said.
And then there was one.
One arrogant despot, too ignorant and self absorbed to make an obvious choice that is good for his country as well as his planet.
I am almost too ashamed for words.

The Germans are really doing their best to warn us.
Somebody on Twitter also added this. Just in case this article is too subtle.German press WARN: "Trump has transformed the United States into a laughing stock and he is a danger to the world."https://t.co/IylLtoze5x— Duty To Warn (@duty2warn) September 23, 2017
Every high school government teacher in the country, currently teaching about the rise of the Third Reich, should be showing tapes of Trump rallies, and posting his tweets which attack the press, and telling their students "That, boys and girls, that is how it happened."The Germans, above all others, can see the pattern and danger in Trumpism. Germany does not want to be our friend anymore. Thanks Trump!
Oh yeah, we're not going to be friends. |
In their campaign program for the German election, Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservatives have dropped the term “friend” in describing the relationship with the United States.
Four years ago, the joint program of her Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and its Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU), referred to the United States as Germany’s “most important friend” outside of Europe.
The 2013 program also described the “friendship” with Washington as a “cornerstone” of Germany’s international relations and talked about strengthening transatlantic economic ties through the removal of trade barriers.
But the words “friend” and “friendship” are missing from the latest election program - entitled “For a Germany in which we live well and happily” - which Merkel and CSU leader Horst Seehofer presented on Monday ahead of a Sept. 24 election.
Instead, the United States is described as Germany’s “most important partner” outside of Europe. CDU officials were not immediately available to comment on the change in wording.
You know one the themes of Trump's campaign was that President Obama was not garnering trust among our allies around the world.
Just another example of projection on his part apparently.
Currently our allies around the world are wondering if Americans have lost their damn minds, and whether to trust the new president with anymore classified information.
Those were certainly not their concerns a year ago at this time.

Donald Trump is so reckless that he is even scaring the Pope.
Courtesy of CNN:
Pope Francis said Saturday he worries that rising tensions between the United States and North Korea could lead to a wide military conflict that would wipe out a "large part of humanity."
He called for renewed diplomacy using third-party intermediaries and for the United Nations to take a lead role in de-escalating tensions.
The Pope, while returning to Italy from Egypt, took several questions from reporters and one asked him what he would say to world leaders at this critical moment.
Francis said in Italian that the situation "has heated up too much. I always appeal for a solution through diplomatic means."
The pontiff, who has spoken of a "piecemeal third world war" for several years, said increased conflict would be devastating.
"It's piecemeal but the pieces are getting larger, and are concentrated in places which were already hot," Pope Francis said. "Today a wider war would destroy, I won't say half of humanity, but a large part of humanity and culture. It would be terrible. I don't think humanity today could bear it."
You know when a guy who firmly believes in an afterlife, and that he absolutely has a reserved parking place in that afterlife, expresses great concern about the possibility of a war, I think he deserves our attention.
And the Pontiff is right, Trump's ignorance and lack of preparedness for the job of president puts the entire world at risk.
If I were working for the FBI, I would be working around the clock to prove Trump's ties to Russia and get him removed from office before it is simply too late.

US and Saudi Arabia force G2O to drop language addressing financing action against climate change from joint statement.
G2O Summit 2015 |
Opposition from the United States, Saudi Arabia and others has forced Germany to drop a reference to financing programs to combat climate change from the draft communique at a G20 finance and central bankers meeting.
A G20 official taking part in the meeting said on Friday that efforts by the German G20 presidency to keep the wording on climate change financing had run into resistance.
"Climate change is out for the time being," said the official, who asked not to be named.
At their last meeting in July 2016 in the Chinese city of Chengdu, the G20 financial leaders said they encouraged all signatories of the Paris Agreement on climate change to bring the deal into force as soon as possible.
But U.S. President Donald Trump, who took office in November, has called global warming a "hoax" concocted by China to hurt U.S. industry and vowed to unpick the Paris climate accord that is supposed to curb rising temperatures.
Under the Obama Administration we were leaders in fighting climate change, and now suddenly we are part of the problem.
If you will excuse me I need to cradle my head in my hands in shame and frustration.
This is how the world sees our country now, so for all intents and purposes this is who we are.

Story of the day: Historic nuclear deal struck with Iran.
Secretary of State John Kerry with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif |
Iran and world powers capped a decade-long dispute by reaching a historic deal early Tuesday for Tehran to curb its nuclear program in exchange for the easing of economic sanctions.
The Islamic republic has been negotiating with the U.S., Britain, France, Germany, Russia and China for years, with diplomats most recently extending numerous deadlines in hopes of arriving at a workable and comprehensive plan.
President Barack Obama said the deal with Tehran ensures that "every pathway to a nuclear weapon" had been cut off.
"We have stopped the spread of nuclear weapons in this region," he said in an early-morning statement which — in a rare move — was carried on Iranian television.
Joe Biden called the Affordable Care Act a "big fucking deal."
Well this is a really, REALLY big fucking deal!
Of course Israel and Saudi Arabia are vocally speaking out against this deal, and insisting that Iran will never honor any agreement. But that is to be expected.
However there is language in the agreement that the sanctions now removed will "snap back" if Iran defies any of the provisions and that would put them back to square one, with very little hope of negotiating anything new for decades afterward.
It is also worth noting that America and Iran did not reach this deal on their own. They were joined by Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia, and the European Union.
Which means that if Iran tries to pull anything underhanded they will have destroyed their relationship with just about every potential ally they could possibly have in the world.
I don't care how arrogant you might be, pissing off the entire world and turning them against you is never the smart thing to do.
Man that Obama legacy thing is looking more impressive every day.

If this is not a real quote it ought to be.
I saw this graphic the other day and I loved it.
However I have not yet been able to confirm that Nye said this, even though this image shows up at several places on the internet.
Oh well, like I said in my headline, if Bill Nye did not say this he certainly should.
Update: Okay I found the source. It is from an article ABOUT Bill Nye.
It appears that it is not a direct quote from Nye, but rather an opinion expressed by the author of the piece.
Still I think it is certainly something Bill Nye SHOULD say.

You know I have always thought this was true.
Let's face it the differences between Sharia law and the fundamentalist Christian point of view are virtually non-existent.
And though the Fundies will not say this out loud the way that Islamic countries control their women and punish non-believers give them a righteous woody.

Iran, the EU, and US reach historic framework agreement on nuclear program. Update!
Secretary of State John Kerry with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif |
Iran and six world powers reached a historic agreement Thursday on a broad framework for resolving their long-standing dispute over Iran's nuclear program, which has left the Islamic nation economically isolated.
"Today we have taken a decisive step. We have reached solutions on key parameters for a comprehensive future nuclear deal," said European Union Foreign Affairs Minister Federica Mogherini, in formally announcing the deal in Lausanne, Switzerland.
She said Iran would not produce weapons grade fuel and that international monitors will have enhanced access to Iran's nuclear facilities.
She also said that sanctions would be "terminated" but did not specify the timetable, which has been a key sticking point of the negotiations. Iran had pushed to lift them immediately, while the United States wants most of them in place until Iran follows through on terms of the deal. The precise timing will be determined as the negotiators work out a final agreement scheduled for completion in June.
President Obama called the deal an "historic understanding" that was "a long time coming."
Speaking in the White House Rose Garden, he said it "shuts down" Iran's path to a bomb using enriched uranium.
"This deal was not based on trust," the president said. "It was based on unprecedented verification."
Of course this does not mean that this framework is set in stone, and it is contingent on reaching an actual agreement by June 30th. However this is a great first positive step.
Under this new framework, Iran would shut down more than two-thirds of its installed centrifuges capable of producing uranium that could be used to build a bomb, dismantle a reactor that could produce plutonium, and accept intrusive verification from inspectors.
No doubt Israel Prime Minister Netanyahu is going to take a giant dump all over this, as will his sycophants in the Republican party, but that does not mean it is not a good deal or that President Obama is naive.
Simply put I would trust him to make a deal with Iran, over every single Republican in the country.
Update: Don't believe the hype that America gave away everything and Iran gave little, it is not true.
Here is a copy (PDF) of the actual framework. Take a look for yourself.

So Sarah Palin was on Fox News babbling incoherently about Russia again.
Stuart Varney, the guy with the British accent that Roger Ailes hired to class up Fox News (Yeah good luck with that!), had Palin on today to discuss Christmas, Russia, energy, and other things that she know absolutely nothing about.
Somebody sent me a link so I listened to it and for the most part found nothing but the same old incomprehensible word salad that we have come to expect from the Queen of Non Sequiturs. (Varney asks her a question about Russia but her answer is so convoluted that I simply cannot bring myself to attempt a transcript.)
But then Varney asked Palin to explain why the President does not want to open federal lands in order to drill them full of holes to get more oil.
"Our President has absolutely no clue about what that inherent link between energy and sovereignty, energy and security and prosperity is, because he has no experience, I think, in the real world, or even in the corporate world, and understanding how energy is so extremely important for our economy and for our security, So that being said, that our President is clueless about all this, you would thing though that the Democrats, especially from oil producing states would be able to influence Democrat leadership, like our President, and help explain to him that we could take away Putin's power. We could take away the threats from some of these emerging economies to, who are using..um..energy as a weapon, as a weapon against us, and like you say you take that away by being sovereign and secure in your own energy security, your own energy independence. You do that by drilling domestically and when you hear President Obama spew this BS about what he has done to increase domestic supplies of energy, remember it is BS. Because on federal lands he still locks it up, he still wants it locked up."
Holy shit, there is not enough dressing in the world to make that word salad palatable.
And God I hate it when this imbecile starts arguing that President Obama has no experience in the real world. THE MAN HAS BEEN PRESIDENT FOR SIX FUCKING YEARS NOW!
There is no way he could NOT have experience in the "real world." He is the fucking leader of it!
Besides Palin's contention that drilling domestically would "take away Putin's power" is just another giant load of moosenuggets.
In fact we get so little of our oil from Russia it would make literally no discernible difference if we stopped.
And in fact if Palin knew anything about what she is talking about she would know that America gets the majority of its oil from right here in North America.
And a whopping 60% of the oil we use comes from production right here in the good old US of A.
You know that is something that I would think a self identified "energy expert" might already know.
By the way the very last thing that any of us should want is for the ANY world leader to green light more oil exploration in this country or anywhere else in the world. And fortunately this President understands that the future lies in renewable energy sources and has made that a priority.
Perhaps a better use of Palin's time would be to stop making stupid videos about fake pie baking, and giving insipid interviews, and instead take a load off those spindly legs of hers and sit down to watch a little television.

Finally some level headed reporting on Ebola from....Fox News?
Courtesy of Raw Story:
“We don’t have an outbreak,” Smith said. “We have two sick people from one dying man. And the rest of this should stop, because it’s not productive. And it’s not worth ratings, and it’s not worth politics, and we all need to stop it.”
You know I recently slammed Shep Smith for his histrionics over ISIS and claims that the other Muslim countries would not work with the US to fight them.
However on this topic he is by far the voice of reason.
I usually watch MSNBC, and not only is Chris Matthews constantly pulling his hair out over this, I also watched a clip during Chris Hayes show where they followed an ambulance containing an Ebola victim with a helicopter.
Shades of OJ Batman, that is ridiculous!
We have been documenting Ebola outbreaks since 1976, and yes this might be the biggest one so far, but there are still far fewer deaths than can be attributed to the common flu each year.
Remember when the AIDS epidemic had some suggesting the rounding up of homosexuals, testing them for HIV and then isolating them from the rest of the population?
Same out of control hysteria this time around. And of course it is driven in no small way by the politics of fear.
And we all know which political party that favors.

More evidence that Edward Snowden is not the selfless patriot that many want him to be.

For the sake of argument let’s say that everything Snowden stole pertaining to possible illegal activity by the NSA is 100% legit and every last bit of it is proven to be unconstitutional. Then yes, I would agree that he’s a patriot and a hero for risking everything to take that stand.
Except that’s not all he stole, nor is it all that he’s leaked.
Telling a newspaper in China that the United States government spied on Chinese computers isn’t “revealing unconstitutional surveillance of Americans” and leaking that classified information is illegal.
Writing an “open letter” trying to get Brazil to grant him political asylum by offering to help Brazil investigate United States surveillance, because Snowden leaked information about the U.S. spying on the Brazilian government, isn’t “standing up for the Constitutional rights of Americans.”
Saying that the NSA is “in bed” with Germany and other governments, working together on elaborate surveillance programs, isn’t “protecting the freedom of American citizens.”
Leaking documents showing that Sweden has helped the United States spy on Russia isn’t “being a patriot.”
Producing documents that reveal details on how the NSA gets some of its intelligence on the location of dangerous terrorists isn’t “being a passionate supporter of our Bill of Rights.”
Revealing that the United States uses cyber-attacks as an “intelligence weapon” for overseas targets has nothing to do with our Constitution.
Neither did producing documents that showed the British government set up surveillance of G20 delegates and phones during the G20 summit in 2009.
Last I checked, countries in Latin America weren’t protected by our Constitution either – yet Snowden still leaked information about how the NSA listens in on phone calls in many of those nations.
There is actually quite a bit more over at Forward Progressives, but I think you get the drift.
IF Snowden had simply revealed the domestic spying that was going on in this country, then the argument concerning his patriotism, even if he fled the country, might seem valid.
But as the above post lays out Snowden reveaed information that undercuts our ability to protect ourselves from cyber attacks, our ability to gather intelligence, and our reputation with our allies.
Now recent information suggests that Snowden may have come to the attention of Moscow six years ago.
I know there are still some arguing that he is a misunderstood whistle blower who is being smeared by the United States, but most of the evidence I have seen suggests otherwise.

According to an obviously flawed study Alaskans spend less time pleasuring their partners in bed than any other state. Oh, that is SO wrong.
Courtesy of The Nerve:
The Spreadsheets App, a mobile app that uses your phone's accelerometer and speakers to provide statistical feedback about your duration, thrusts, and decibel peak, is taking big data to the bedroom.
"Spreadsheets was created to approach sex in a way that is both light-hearted and improvement oriented," says Danny Wax, Co-founder of the app. "We wanted to create an app that entices users to have some fun with their partner and share in that afterglow experience, while encouraging open dialog and feedback." Whereas some couples might have problems approaching topics like the frequency or quality of their sex lives, fun visual and logical feedback, including 30 earned "achievements" (like Seven in Heaven for a seven-minute rendezvous and Quick Spread for three-minute trysts), feels like a low-pressure way of checking in. Of course, with all wearable and quantified tech comes a gamification component.
Spreadsheets shared the stats of its 10,000 early adopters so we could investigate who has cross-country endurance and who's a one-minute wonder. Averaging the intercourse time of all users in the United States (the app doesn't cover foreplay), we've provided a ranking of duration in minutes for all 50 states and the District of Columbia as a little bonus. While finishing times of under three minutes may surprise you, remember that these are just the averages among two-pump chumps and Lotharios alike. Besides, previous research has shown that, despite the hubbub about hours-long tantric sessions, intercourse itself usually only lasts for about 3 to 13 minutes.
Okay well it is all good fun until somebody's state comes in dead last in the pump per session category.

Experts attribute lowest number of California teen births in 20 years to sex education course in high school. Fundamentalists respond by plugging their ears and yelling "We can't hear you!"
Courtesy of Think Progress:
California’s teen birth rate has plummeted to the lowest level that it’s been in the past 20 years, according to new data from the state’s health department. The state’s rate now stands at 28 births for every 1,000 teenage girls — a 60 percent drop since 1991, when the rate peaked at 70.9 births for every 1,000 girls.
Public health experts directly attribute this success to state laws that require California’s public schools to offer comprehensive sex ed classes with scientifically accurate information about birth control. State officials also credited family planning programs that provide community-based resources to teens. “We do believe that our programs are behind these numbers,” Karen Ramstrom, the chief of the program standards branch at the California Department of Public Health’s maternal child and adolescent health division, told the Los Angeles Times.
That’s in line with national trends. As a whole, the United States’ teen pregnancy rate has been plummeting to record lows, largely because teens are gaining better access to contraceptive methods and opting to use birth control as soon as they become sexually active. And research suggests that community-based youth programs are one of the most effective strategies of instilling teens with healthy attitudes and safe approaches toward sexuality.
But progress in this area isn’t uniform across every area of the country. While states like California are making huge gains, the teen pregnancy rate remains stubbornly high in the South. Adolescents there tend to receive ineffective abstinence education, and they’re more likely to lack access to birth control resources.
Gee who da thunk it?
Providing comprehensive education AND access to birth control actually LOWERS the teen birth rate? Amazing.
As we well know these statistics will have little impact on the conservatives whose four part strategy will essentially remain, "No, no, no don't do that!"
Followed by, "Oh well now you've done it!"
And then of course, "Nope, gotta have it!"
And then finally, "No we will not help you. We only care about the fetus BEFORE it is born. Good luck slut"
